£129.99 most places. The RRP is dropping by 30 quid or so, so prices should fall fast.

About 5 decent Wii games out of a catalogue of 1000+

Mind you there is a decent amount of Gamecube games that can be used on it. Then again you can pick up a Gamecube on the bay for under £20.

Seriously, what type of person comes onto a deal about Wii just to hate on it?

What does that say about your personality? Is your life that empty?

I don't think its true, I've got 2 wiis, one in the living room and one upstairs, I enjoy a few games on them but they are a bit crap compared to 360 and PS3. Still have a few great games and some good games but I'd advise anyone who just wants to play normal games like first person shooters, race games to not choose a wii and go for one of the other 2. I do this because its true and I like to help people. The wii isn't as powerful as the original xbox and they can be picked up for peanuts nowadays so even £50 is quite a lot.

Its really down to what games you like best, I think for the majority gaming is better on 360/ps3 but for some the wii is a good choice especially for younger children. For younger children I think I wouldn't choose anything other than a wii. I'd still recommend a wii to people who have a ps3/360 as it does have some great exclusive games its just if you only want one console generally the wii is at the bottom of the list.

people who rant about the ps3 and 360 forget that graphics doesnt determine gameplay.
the snes had great games - mario kart, zelda etc and those games compete with the nest today in terms of gameplay.
the wii rocks. yes, even despite its relatively poor graphics.
#19
Ideal at £50 for running the great wii homebrew apps.

To be fair, more kids play on 360 judging by virtually every online lobby on every xbox 360 game ever made. But mainly CoD.

I wouldn't disagree in principle but its not just graphics the extra memory and processing power means much more sophisticated game worlds. Games like Fallout 3 and the upcoming skyrim have quite complex worlds which the wii isn't capable of. Not all games require this though. I have to say I've played more hours on Fallout 3 just one game on the 360/PS3 than I have with all my wii games put together. I even use dreamcast and original xbox more than wii as I have some favourite games on those consoles I go back to occasionally. A lot of the time on wii is also for gamecube games like zelda windwaker and mario sunshine.

As someone who grew up with nintendo's and who has owned a 360 since launch, I must admit I really do feel like some classic Mario/Zelda action so in that respect I'm tempted.

Any of you knowledeable types advise whether better to get a new one or a second hand one if I want to hack it to enable homebrew etc.

second hand is fine if you are going to play 'backups' from a hard disk as the laster won't get used

Either's fine as far as i know.
If you have a console with firmware 4.3 (the latest one) you'll need a copy of Lego Batman (or a couple of other specific games) in order to softmod.
If you have firmware 4.2 or under i believe you don't need anything else in order to softmod it, but you might need to upgrade it to firmware 4.2 first.

I'm not sure what firmware retail units ship with, and obviously second hand units could have any kind of firmware on them.

"modmii" was the program/guide i was looking at last time i considered doing this.

I have the old white wii, not played that much since 2006 still good doe and I just bought a 360 november 2010 and even it hasnt been played much, I havent played my xbox for almost 2 months now I feel like my subscription is being wasted :(
Anyways the wii is plenty fun but for more serious games ps3 or xbox is better.
I would definantly buy for £50 if I didnt already have it.
Also a wii 2 is coming out next year or soon with better graphics so it wont have a disadvantage then, all they need to do is bring out regular controllers and have the wiimote/nunchuck combi as optional kind of like the ps3 move.
The wii is currently the quietest, most power efficient and best looking console of the 3 big guns.

Hot anyways

If it brews beer i'am in! ;)

There has been a price drop across the board on these - you'll soon see a White Wii with Mario Kart and Wheel at similar price (same trade price) unsure if they'll try and edge up the retail on it........
#33
It's all about the SNES
#34
The Wii itself doesn't really have any games for 'gamers', but if that £49 price is true then it's worth it purely for downloading the classic games from the store that i was brought up with as a kid i.e Zelda Link To The Past, Secret Of Mana, Metroid etc. Well worth it.

I get two overlapping impressions with Nintendo's hack n slash approach to the wii's pricing.

Firstly there sat on A LOT of stock, at one point as you all know the wii was running away with units sold and iirc many expected that trend to continue for a good while. It didn't so perhaps Nintendo forward ordered too many to be produced. I hope this is the case as as SEGA will testify it's a tough old hardware world out there.

Secondly there sat on A LOT of stock AND the wii wii offers either very little different to the wii (HD gfx) meaning that they need to clear the stocks or else no one will buy the wii wii at say £250 at launch ( I don't favour this option). Or secondly that the new wii is massively different (maybe not better ;) ) and they need a clear price difference in order to shift the stocks of the wii - similiar mentality to the slimline ps2's for £49. Nintendo know they can't pitch the wii too high no matter what it reasonably expected to offer and so if the price difference is slight there's going to be a lot of wii's kicking around the supply chain for an extended period.

As for the snes - it blew the megadrive out of the water in that department - so it had gameplay and good gfx...........

Pickup one up this morning, box only mentions console, controller, mario kart & wheel. Doesnt say anything about Sports Resort or Motion Control.

****. I could name 30-40 quality games without any problem (if I could be arsed to do a list)..

I'll certainly admit this year has been **** for the Wii..but there's plenty of quality stuff that's available ...if you bother to look.
