LOL you think that is a good thing? The Google ecosystem is designed to make it as difficult as possible to succeed without Google. Why do you think Cyanogen failed?

It will be based on Google, it will simply be an off shoot of aosp same as oneplus has. Cyanogen failed because it doesn't have a good way of making money. They make no hardware and where reliant on deals with small Chinese manufacturers.

But this is not their core business and certainly not their core expertise. This has bad idea written all over it.

cyanogen is simply a version of a android like every phone comes with their own version. Wileyfox could simply use the original unedited version why do they 'need' Cyanogen......

it's all google

They don't need Cynanogen but they do need a new distro. If they go the straight Google route then they have to pay Google and I assume that the costs are higher than with Cyanagen which also promised more flexibility for them and the user. Android may be free but the core Google services are not!

It could screw up their whole pricing/charging strategy. They would have to pay Google for access to Google services. They can of course try another AOSP rom but there would be zero support and limited access to Google core services.

There could always adopt Cyanogen's successor LineageOS.

True but again with only limited support. The whole point of Cyanogen besides price, was that it was a full service including support. LineageOS will not have any where near the resources of the full organisation. Of course, no one can say that Wileyfox and others wont find other cost effective routes to market. It will just be very difficult to find that kind of "full" package without going the traditional and therefore more expensive Google route.

Re the Cyanogenmod issue, any phone you buy, even ones from Samsung or Sony, don't guarantee the OS will be kept up to date or supported. The same can be said of phones from China. I'm using a first gen Moto G to write this, and support for that ended a long time ago and it still works.

I wasn't talking about user support. I was talking about support to Wileyfox!
