Youll poopoo it until you have listened to this amazing collaboration on Spotify/Amazon. Favourites are Lemon Jelly's Together & the Pulp cover. I only listened to it after seeing the surprisingly high 4.5/5 reviews on amazon.co.uk (40 reviews) & amazon.com over (231)
1. "Common People" (with Joe Jackson)
2. It Hasn't Happened Yet
3. You'll Have Time
4. Trying (with Ben Folds and Aimee Mann)
5. What Have You Done
6. Together (with Lemon Jelly)
7. Familiar Love
8. Ideal Woman
9. Has Been
10.I Can't Get Behind That (with Henry Rollins)
11.Real (with Brad Paisley)

This review sums it up
"Anyone aware of Shatner will instantly think of MR TAMBORINE MAAAAAN! or Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, which either arouse hoots of laughter, or immediate hatred from those with no humour.
"Has Been" opens with a cover of Pulp's Common People... while you may think that he's continuing in the same vein as Transformed Man, this is not the case and you cant help but take the album seriously once you're half way into it. Sure there are still smiles to be had, but they're of a different kind.

Produced by Ben Folds (of Ben Folds Five fame) and featuring Adrian Belew, Joe Jackson, Lemon Jelly, Aimee Mann, Brad Paisley and Henry Rollins (amongst others) the musical composition actually oozes class. In Transformed Man, Shatners monologues were back by Star-Trekkish music - this is not the case with 'Has Been' and Shatner can be heard to actually sing correctly with choral or orchestral backgrounds.

Opening with a strong cover of 'Common People' that will have the listener smiling, the album follows with "It Hasn't Happened Yet" which sets the tone for what the album really is - it's about where Shatner is at the moment, and is a fairly personal album."

I have to say the version of Common People on this album is superb. I think I prefer it to the original. The Shat conveys real emotion in his voice.

Great album, the account of him finding his wife's body is waaay to harrowing for me personally but the rest of the album is just lovely.

Has Been is my favourite. The whole Album is so bad it's good!

Wow, I think of this album as just plain good. I think people thought Transformed Man was so bad it's good (I didn't, couldn't listen to that one after the tidbits I'd heard), but this album is just surprising in that it's actually good, no bad about it.

None of which are on this CD?
This surprisingly quite good, the common people cover is superb!

What a load of old ****!!! (apart from CP which is strangely compulsive listening:?)

This is a bloody brilliant album. Hats off to Ben Folds for providing most of the support on it too

It's worse than that - HE'S DEAD JIM!!!!

Soth 8-)

Brilliant album

Just gave this a listen for the first time. After the rather light hearted but brilliant Common People cover, I was stunned by its sincerity. Although William Shatner is using the same spoken delivery in the comedy songs that made him infamous (Lucy in the Sky etc.), the tone couldn't be more different. And it works - it works wonders...

Henry Rollins talked about his experience recording a track for this in one of his stand up shows and it sounds like it was a very funny experience indeed! I need to hear it but have better things to spend my money on at the moment unfortunately.

A brilliant album. I wonder how good it would have been without Ben Folds' involvement though. The man's a genius.

That could be why I love it so much - I was a big Ben Folds Five fan...

Bit annoyed that I didnt buy it several months ago when it was around £5 though :(

good album.

it's Ben Folds who made it all work and brought everything together but t I wouldn't take anything away from all the other people involved in the album. There were quite a few guest singers on a lot of these tracks and a lot of really good musicians involved in the album as well. They even managed to get Nick Hornby involved in co-writing one of the songs. The album also just wouldn't have worked without William Shatner just as it wouldn't have worked without Ben Folds.

Having said all this, you'll still have a hard job convincing anyone at work that this actually is a good album once you've mentioned William Shatner :)
#25
It's music Jim, but not as we know it.

Anyone seen the Shatner roast on comedy central?

I must be the only one that thinks listening to someone talking songs instead of singing them is a bit rubbish lol.
