Argos have Windows 7 Home Premium E Edition available for pre-order again at the £49.99 price.

But it takes a little work, on their site it's listed as £79.99 but it clearly states that if you order by the 09/08/2009 then there is a £30 discount.

The only way to get this is to phone Argos directly and explain to the CSA on the phone what you want, it's product code and why you're calling them (ie the price on the site is wrong)

Also make sure that they don't charge you the postage fee, my CSA tried, but I pointed her to the website again and she took it off no worries.

Very helpful, if you get no joy at John Lewis then this looks like a good option.

PS I know that Microsoft have said that their not gonna release the E edition anymore, but you should still get a Full retail copy from this, if not there's gonna be hundered's (if not thousands) having a good old moan.

PPS The product number is 573/6623 and the phone number I called was 01785 250000 Ask for sales (This is from the SayNoTo0870.com site)

Enjoy Tek

thanks for the info, i have left it late again, just reading up on it i see they have a 32 and a 64 bit edition. as i will be building a new pc for this i want the 64bit, do you know which version this is for? i would hate to have my pc throttled by a 32bit version.
#3
The disks are sent with both 32 and 64bit on them as far as i'm aware, sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong.

Also from the Microsoft Page stating that Pre-Ordering has ended...

NOTICE: Regarding Windows 7 “E” Versions

We are intent on providing people with the best possible experience using their PCs with Windows. Building on that important principle, we will ship the same version of Windows 7 in Europe as in rest of the world on the worldwide launch date of 22 October, 2009. This version of Windows 7 includes Windows Internet Explorer 8 to help people get the most from their PCs and the Internet. We will not ship E editions of Windows 7, which would not have included Internet Explorer. Customers who pre-order Windows 7 will receive versions of the product that include Internet Explorer. Customers participating in the Windows Upgrade Option available with select new PCs running Windows Vista will also receive versions of Windows 7 that include Internet Explorer. Customers in Europe will also be able to choose between upgrade and full versions of Windows 7.

As OP said - £79.99 shown on their site - you have to ring them to get the discounted price.

Phone call worked for me - thanks OP :)

Phone call worked for me too. They said that if you follow the order all the way through on-line it will only debit your account with £49.99 but didn't want to take the chance so did it over the phone. They tried charging me for delivery as with the OP, but just mention the listing on the webpage that says free delivery and they knocked it off. Thanks OP!
#11
they would not sell it to me, tried phoning twice, they said its internet only.

The number quoted above is for Argos Direct and NOT for Argos internet sales which is where this offer comes from.

Since this offer is not available from Argos Direct they cannot sell it to you, although they may offer to transfer you to the internet sales department.

I did finally get an order in (thanks OP) but they seemed pretty clueless on the phone, suggesting I ring again to order nearer the October delivery date (when the offer expires in 2 days), that I do a collect from store in a few days (when the product isn't available until October), followed by lots of "I'll just ask my supervisor" and finally the mandatory £5.49 delivery charge when it's free delivery.

I wanted two copies but can't go through all that again.

Megamart.

I tried again and got it on the 3rd try, i think its the luck of the draw on who answers the phone.
i think it helped i was very polite, which took some doing on my 3rd go.

NOTE: This version of Windows 7 will not include a browser (for example: it will not come with Internet Explorer 8). We recommend therefore you have an Internet browser from Microsoft or from another software manufacturer saved onto a CD/DVD or another medium before you install Windows 7.

bit wierd aint it??

Yes because Ubuntu can run all mainstream software especially games with stunning 3D graphics.

The reason they weren't going to bundle it with a browser was because it was unfair competition with Opera & Mozilla etc. IF M$ bundle their OS's with IE, IE will look like the most popular browser because people know no different.

Hopefully Opera will begin to get more attention in the future.

Why?
#30
I believe M$ were fined millions by a European court for uncompetitive practice and one of the conditions was that they unbundled IE. So you can't blame M$ for a change...
#31
IE is now bundled, and the E version is no longer being sold.

The UK will be getting upgrade versions like the rest of the world.

Why the change of heart from MS ? If they were supplying the EU the 'E' version to comply with the ruling what has changed?
I ordered 2 copies last month from Comet for £44.99 each :)
#34
Well sod that then, I don't want a bloody upgrade version, I wanted to do a nice clean install. Cancelling my preorder. :x

They are now making it so that when you start ie for the first time you get redirected to a website that offers alternative browsers. Its a good move for Microsoft.

They haven't said whether or not the version everyone preordered would turn into the upgrade version or stay as the clean install version.

picture still shows the E version. if we order now, will we get the E version or the normal one when it finally ships?

Well the E version doesnt exist anymore so who knows.
#38
Seems like inconsistant customer service. Come on Argos get it sorted.
#39
Nothing to do with Argos. There only crime is being a little slow with updating the site. Blaim the EU it was a petty ruling anyway. Firefox is doing quite well without the EU's help.

I've just tried calling and ordering. Didn't get anywhere. The CS said they may have sold out all their pre orders at 49.99, that's why it shows up as 79.99 in the basket. Said she couldn't take my order over the phone anyway as it's internet only. Anyone else getting anywhere?
