Product Description
Windows 8.1 is a personal computer operating system developed by Microsoft as part of Windows NT family of operating systems. It was announced at CES 2011, and followed by the release of three pre-release versions from September 2011 to May 2012. The operating system was released for general availability on October 26, 2012.

Windows 8.1 Pro is comparable to Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate and is targeted towards enthusiasts and business users; it includes all the features of Windows 8. Additional features include the ability to receive Remote Desktop connections, the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain, Encrypting File System, Hyper-V, and Virtual Hard Disk Booting,Group Policy as well as BitLocker and BitLocker To Go. Windows Media Center functionality will be available only for Windows 8 Pro as a separate software package.

Same supplier, just a Win 10 key?

Still safer to go Windows 8.1 then upgrade?

yep

people report the dodgy keys getting bricked after a few months

but Microsoft never yet bricked an upgrade from W7/ W8/8.1 to W10 because they gave it a brand new product key & don't do ant more record-keeping after that

so the W10 free upgrade hasn't finished , thanks , didn't know that

mind you I do use a screen magnifier occasionally so I'm a genuine user of assistive technologies ;)

The original key is still tied to the new one though (which are both tied to hardware on MS servers). Whether or not a 'dodgy' Win8.1 key getting deactivated would affect your Win10 license is still somewhat a guessing game as there will never be official word from MS as they keep licencing policies & procedures close to their chest.
Chances are though, since they obviously had reason enough to give it away free in the first place (ie. because it makes them more money in the long run) chances are they won't really care enough to deactive keys as long as long as it means more Win10 users.

so this deal is about buying a dodgy windows 8.1 key , then (dishonestly) claiming you need the assistive technologies, to qualify for the Windows 10 upgrade..... great deal...
