Description
First Post !!!
One of television's most critically acclaimed programmes, The Wire challenges viewers with a "cop show" unlike anything else on air.

The HBO series addresses the seedy side of Baltimore's finest looking into money, drugs, politics and murder. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn.

A study on urban life in one of America's toughest cities, each season of The Wire has focused on a different aspect of Baltimore, starting with the police force and the drug trade, then moving on to City Hall, the education system and concluding with the media. Over the course of five seasons, David Simon has endeavoured to build a city.

Hot. Ordered. If its anywhere near as good as The Shield then it's well worth the money.

It's better than The Shield (which was great) but give yourself time to get into it as it slowly builds the story and characters. Nothing else has so many characters with so much depth.

As others have said, you just needed to give it time.

It is excellent, although people tend to not consider it as good as hype suggested due to it being hyped by The Guardian (which is enough to put most people off), shown by the BBC at strange hours instead of showing it properly (one episode a week on a Thursday at 9.00 pm would of been nice) so people often didnt see it in the right order and gave up. And in Peep Show David Mitchell said it was overated, and lets face it, allot of it would go over most Brits heads. And allot of people are snobs and like to put there noses up at things about black gangsters, drug dealers, ghettos because they consider that too "chavvy". Its like how most gamers always say that GTA San Andreas wasnt the best GTA, and always say the inferior vice city was.

It isnt overated, it is very good indeed. Parts of it work better than others but if your pretty open minded you will enjoy 99% of it. I found the city hall stuff pretty boring, and series 2 the polak dock workers and "The Greek" seem abit out of place at first, but it all connects together to explain how drugs and cities work.

But I would say Breaking Bad is just as good if not better. Shame that it has been thrown around by FX and Five USA so it doesnt get the proper air time that it deserves. Im hoping Sky Atlantic can remedy this problem with great US shows, but tbh one channel isnt enough. We need at least 3 sky atlantics. I wish the UK could produce shows of this calibre, there are plenty of stories to tell about Britains crime and poverty, Its imperial heyday, the war etc. This is England the series is as good as were gonna get for now though.

Watched all of them last year, along with the Sopranos and the Shield it is the best programme I have ever seen. Agree with the above comments that it's slow to get started but still briliant. Gonna order this for my dad.

I prefer The Sheild myself :p

I've just finished reading the book about the show (The Wire: Truth Be Told), it's really good. I might have to dip into the box set, just to listen to the commentaries.

confused - wire or sheild
#22
great series and price well worth it
#23
Shield hands down! Wire is also fantastic! Heat OP!
#24

Great series and a great price. Dadbinns will love watching this again.

I'm currently on the 2nd season of this, it's good, but it's in my opinion too slow moving. Personally I think the shield is the best cop series ever released, but nonetheless a very hot deal!
#27
Showing as £59.85 for me now ;)

Overhyped IMO, I got to season 4 but then just lost interest with it. The first two seasons are great, superb acting, but after that if start to become boring... I'm not sure how some can regard it as the best TV show ever to be honest. But I guess they just haven't watched Six Feet Under!

I thought season 4 was one of the best after season 1. utterly brilliant show IMO. also went and watched The Corner, which was brilliant also and done by the same people, hard at times though but brilliant.

I'd argue that we simply make a different type of drama, generally small mini-series and one offs. Poliakoff, Bennett et al are never going to make 100+ episodes of anything. However, just because the narrative style is shorter doesn't mean the quality is any less, it merely means the material is structured in a different manner, often being adapted plays/books and lasting less than six hours. Think of Red Riding, Five Days, The Long Firm, State of Play etc - as dramas they're the equal of anything.

There are still decent British series out there;
Being Human you mentioned
Spooks
Shameless
Dr Who
Sherlock Holmes

If you take into account Sturgeon's Law i'd say in terms of quality we're about even.

Price gone up for me too...well done to all who bought at £40

Great series, great deal. Toastie!

really wanted to like this show. got half way through series 3 and finally gave up. didnt like any of the characters (except Omar) and its very very slow - gets good about 10 episodes in - unfortunately there's only 12 a season.
