I know this has been up before, but it's back again for a decent price for this series. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was slow-burning but great.

Here's the blurb:

The Wire Complete Box Set comes packaged in a black sleeve featuring all 60 episodes re-mastered on 24 discs. With special features including audio commentaries with writer/creator David Simon, director Clarke Johnson and writer George Pelacanos, Q&A sessions with the cast and crew and an hour long "behind the scenes" documentary.

One of television's most critically acclaimed programmes, The Wire addresses the seedy side of Baltimore’s finest looking into money, drugs, politics and murder. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn. A study on urban life in one of America’s toughest cities, each season of The Wire has focused on a different aspect of Baltimore, starting with the police force and the drug trade, then moving on to City Hall, the education system and concluding with the media.

Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for the heads up.

So in the past few days I've bought the boxsets of The Wire and Soprano's. I'll see you all after the Summer, take care.

That would be a cool t-shirt if it didn't contain a glaring grammatical error. It should say Bubbles's Depo, or Bubbles' Depo, since the character is called Bubbles not Bubble.

Epic Pompous Fail.

Why aren't you bothered about the 'depo' bit anyway?

There sure is. Don't be a pompous prat on the internet. Count yourself lucky that I'm not one of those weird hardcore Wire superfans

Just finished watching the whole thing - Series 4 and 5 combined were great! Does need some attention though, rewatching series 1 again now and realising how much I missed / forgot about the characters.... Bargain at this price

Glad to post it! :) And while we're sharing the love, I got the heads up for this from the 'Dvd Price Watch' option that @Packard put me on to in the Generation Kill Blu-Ray post a while back. It's on the http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/ website, (which is a great site in it's own right), so if you log onto it, search for DVDs/Blu-Rays that your looking for and set your ideal price for them it'll send you an email as soon as one of the sites it searches on (which is most of them) reaches that price. Hope that helps anyone! :D

Also, when being a grammar Nazi it is best to use the correct "there", rather than the wrong one - twice.

Yep, as far as I'm aware.

When this was shown on the bbc last year was it in wide screen? i cant remember. because it was shot in 4:3 format wasn't it.
#26
Is the main series better or different to the pilot? I found it really boring and hard going.

To the Newbies who get recommended to watch this, from those of us who are converted...

..initially watching the first series you can't understand what all the hypes about. Persevere, just keep watching it...and then it gets you. There are many of us that when we got bitten by the bug, went and did the 24 hour watching session.
All I can add is that, this is the Greatest TV Show you will ever experience(until something better gets written and produced).

bought the 'reflection' one a while back, crap quality cloth..washed once - turned to ****.
steer clear.. still no word on blu-ray since they were filmed future proof...good price but preferred
the old digipak versions which i've now sold...

Wise words. Personally I had three goes at watching the first 3 or 4 episodes of Series 1. Again, wondering why everyone was so hot on the whole thing, and then BAM!. Hooked.

Part of it is waiting for your ear to tune in to the Baltimore slang AND accent. Once there though, you're transported into their world. I always think one test for a great TV show is how surprised you'd be to meet the characters if you bumped into them in the street / pub. If it wouldn't be that surprising (that they were real) you know the actor/scriptwriters/director have nailed it.

If you liked The Wire, ensure you see The Shield, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

I would try catching it on FX when it starts next week but from the sounds of it staring quite slow i think it will probably be best to order this so you can watch more than 1 episode a week.

Ordered and heat added.

Brilliant series, great price = +heat
#32
On season 3 at the moment - SLICK Series
#33
Well worth the money
#34
Would buy this, but will save my money and watch it on FX HD. They're starting it from Episode 1 next week.
#35
Best TV show ever. If you're thinking of buying this, stop thinking now - BUY IT!
#36

Nice!

Heat added.

In the interests of balance, you don't have to be taken in by the hyperbole and bleat about The Wire being the best TV show ever just because the critics told you so.

I tried watching a couple of episodes of this when it was on late night BBC1 and found it dull, slow-moving and a bit too generic for my tastes. In short, IMO, The Wire is The Bill with American accents rewritten by Guardian readers.

That said, a check on http://www.whatshouldipay.co.uk reveals this deal is at least £18 cheaper than elsewhere, so I will grit my teeth and vote hot even though it's not for me!
#39
you think I'm gonna be the scapegoat for the whole damn machine Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Top Series, and as big phil says just about to start on FX if you just want to watch it rather than having the physical collection
