Ah memories, buy this and prepare to fall in love with McNulty
#5
the best series IMHO

watched 30 mins of episode 1 - didnt like it at all. its a shame as i thought i would. maybe it needs a second look i dunno.

@Stingerspalsh - take another look. I had to have subtitles for the first couple of episodes and wasn't sure quite what the hype was about. After the first series I was hooked and have bought the other 4. IMHO, the best program that has ever graced our screens.

I lent my sister series 1 but she's a bit of a dozy mare and seems to have lost it. I may buy this because now I want to watch all 5 series over again.

take it. it's just me who thought it was overrated, watched them when it was screened on BBC2 few years back, maybe just overkill.

Took me about 5 episodes (5 hours) to really get into it, but it is well worth it. You need to get to know the characters, which takes a little while.

Everyone seems to go on about this series - I watched a couple and gave up

admittedly its a slow burner but you get so involved with the characters that when someone dies its a real jaw dropper as you do become emotionally attached in some cases but

this astounds me,Im not saying you will like it but to only give it 30mins before writing it off is terrible I think you should give most shows at least a full season watch before writing them off or at least about 5-6 episodes and then decide shows I would have written off if only deciding on the 1st 30mins wouldve been Supernatural - Buffy - the wire -vampire diaries - sopranos - dexter(maybe) - xfiles all amazing shows

Watched first episode and found it slow and dull, doesn't really stand up to the cream of US drama Lost,Prison Break etc better saving your money for one of these.

Prison Break and Lost are the cream of US drama? Hahaha, bless!

LOL - That's like saying a classic such as The Shawshank Redemption doesn't really stand up to the likes of Independence Day. It's like comparing apples and pears. The Wire is one of the most realistic, compelling depictions of urban life, whereas Lost and Prison Break are just fantasy that got more and more detached from reality the longer they were on air.

To quote a review I read of The Wire comparing it to CSI, etc.
"They are pizza, The Wire is a banquet. We don't get enough banquets, so accept this ones invitation, you wont regret it."

Just buy it...

Jimminy is spot-on. Love the quote. I haven't seen anything for years that compares with the Wire. It did take a while for my brain to tune in to the Baltimore street dialogue, but once it fell into place I couldn't get enough. The vast majority of TV crime/action dramas today have completely unrealistic pace and timescales which are fun, but ultimately unsatisfying. Watch this, absorb the story, live the characters lives and be fully satisfied!

Guess it's different strokes, if you want wham bam action drive-bys,serial killers go with The Wire however if you favour an in-depth character study then i'd go with Lost.

I think a few of the critics here should also consider buying Lost as it quite clearly went over their head the first time.Them more than most would benefit from being able to watch it multiple times.
