London: The Sixties. Two down-on-their-luck actors (Withnail and Marwood) find solace in drink and other substances. Seeking respite from their uneventful lives they escape up north to Penrith to Withnail's uncle's stone cottage. Faced with no modern conveniences, a bunch of oddball locals, and a surprise visit from an amorous "Uncle Monty", their wits are tested, along with their friendship.

Indeed. Very much so.

Surely this film deserves to rated as a cult classic for the wonderfully witty script and inspired casting. Worth the money for the tea shop scene alone. Whether you think it overrated or not it has to be worth three notes less change? I'd absolutely rather watch this than a bloated over budget US blockbuster with a limp script and equally flaccid cast to boot. Consistently rated high by critics and the public and qualifying for a reunion spot on R4 for the key cast and production team to relive and reminisce about the fateful circumstance that brought them all together to make a film that was destined to become an all time classic. It is full of comic pathos and laugh out loud eminently quotable one liners. Total Film magazine voted Withnail and I the 3rd greatest comedy film of all time and Rotten Tomatoes gives it 8.4 out of 10. IMDB gives it 7.8 out of 10. Go on give it a go! You never know you might like it better than lighter fluid or a Camberwell carrot and most definitely better than going on holiday by mistake. :whistling:

Love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i bought this about a year ago for this price from play. was mildly miffed tho that the whole movie came as one huge chapter meaning fastforward was the only way of skipping the movie to where you wanted to watch it from - so beware, it might be the case again

Brilliant film. Better than most over-hyped American blockbusters.
#19
British film making at its very best. Definately the kind of film you can watch more than once. Voted hot.

True.this version is crap..poor,poor quality, bno extras or chapters...go for the Special Edition (http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/1098597/Withnail-And-I-20th-Anniversary-Edition/Product.html .In fact, Play.com advertise this version incorrectly no extras etc.Already flagged it up with them but obviously don`t care!

That is a much better deal 'cos the £2.99 version was a newspaper freebie last week - loads will end up in charity shops for sale at a few pennies.

If this is the same transfer as the one I used to own then avoid it because the picture quality is crap. The image is not anamorphic so on a widescreen TV it appears with black borders all round. You would be better off buying the 20th anniversary edition which costs £6.99 from Play, has a second DVD and a CD of the soundtrack. The picture quality is excellent and properly encoded.

One assumes it isn't funny at all. A bit like Withnail and I.
