I was all set to buy my mother a chromebook to make things easy for her surfing the web and word docs etc (all she really uses it for).
But these do look good. Full windows, full office. Easy to use touchscreen interface with a keyboard dock. I'm torn now.
Anyone with real world experience of using these as a normal PC? Cheers
I bought this a while ago and its a great little tablet in terms of speed and the screen. It's is responsive, pretty easy to use, and runs full windows, office etc. Internal 32GB memory gets used up very quickly (I think its around 21GB after Windows is installed), which seems to be down to internet and temporary file storage? We haven't added much else to it.

In terms of a laptop replacement, be aware that it doesn't offer the same sort of portability that a laptop would if you want a decent keyboard experience. Sounds obvious but you have to hold it facing you when you don't have a stand case and a flat surface to put it on (say if you're sitting on the sofa). This probably leaves you with one hand to type with, whereas with a laptop you set the screen angle and can easily type away with it on your lap. Could be that a decent stand (not the Lynx Origami) would solve this, but it's an additional outlay.

The Origami keyboard is a disappointment, with keys often not registering unless you hit them with quite some force. You'll never do 50 words/minute on it. It's convenient because it slots into the base of the tablet without any bother and the case then protects the tablet, but otherwise it's not brilliant in my experience. I've not been able to find any other keyboard with the same 5-contact interface, but you can get stand cases with built-in bluetooth keyboards.

So if you want this as a replacement laptop you'd probably want to buy a decent bluetooth keyboard, maybe a HDMI cable to connect it to your monitor/TV, a 64GB micro SD card and a case. The tablet itself is great for what it packs in to such a small size, but if you need to be truly productive even when sitting in front of the TV then I might suggest a full-blown laptop.

I have not experienced any of the problems you state, perhaps contact Linx about a replacement keyboard?
I’ve just gotten used to using a Lenovo Think Pad for work, it s the first tablet I’ve used with windows on it. I was just that tho no full office. It was fully installed - standard program with no subscription. I was impressed – it was essential to use(save data) when other systems played up. It has 1 USB port but could do with 2 and bigger memory.
How does this one match up please?
It states subscription for the Office? Does this mean there going to try to drain even more funds from the consumer over time rather than just selling a version of office out right for use? Or is it just 365 part that’s subscription please?

I have recorded many of my lectures in the university and meetings at my work place using my phone without needing an external amplifying device or a stereo one. In fact, I didn't even know that this product exists. But i guess, this product is already making people talk in this forum, so must be something good.
I would love to see sample audio video recordings using this product from creative amongst you to really understand a need for this product!

So here is what you can do with the phone that I use
Adding an external mic' gives you lots of creative freedom (to direct the microphone, or fix it on one point whilst panning the camera without getting audio fluctuations etc)
Add in a mobile video editing app, such as Microsoft Movie Creator, & you have a complete mobile video editing platform (perfect for journalists in the field/vloggers etc).

On a more simple level, if you simply want to record audio at a concert, the vast majority of Android/Apple devices will record flat audio that distorts. Adding a microphone such as the one above will give you a great audio track with defined bass and treble.
If you just want to record uni lectures, stick with your built in mic' :)

Good information. But what is the current replacement for the Nokia Lumia 1020?

I have no idea. Microsoft have dropped the ball when it comes to releasing flagship devices for Windows Phone. Fortunately, I am quite content with my 64GB 1020...it does everything I need - and keeps getting better with the OS updates and the quickly improving app situation.

Hi, does this allow you to connect a wired connection in your original router to create a wireless access point elsewhere in the house where the wifi signal is poor non-existent ? any idea what speed this runs at for wireless, ie I would I be able to stream had content using this piece of kit ?
Yes, straightforward if using a different wifi network name for the new remote network, maybe not so straightforward if you wish to use the same network name to seamlessly transition between networks (if you were wandering around the house).
"Wireless Type 802.11bgn" = theoretical maximum speed of 150 Mbps when used with similarly rated devices. (Half that speed when used in wifi repeater mode). Those figures should be ample to stream HD vid assuming the network is not over-utilised and the source vid is not a ridiculously high bitrate.
Hot_Dogs
...To boost an existing wireless connection you simply plug it in (to mains) and connect to it using the password stuck on the travel router. A wizard then opens where you put the password of the Uni / Hotel wireless and it connects and boosts this...
As previously mentioned, if the source wifi network requires a web-browser to log-in rather than just a password (e.g. wifi hotspot from BT/fon etc requires a browser-based log-in), this device is unlikely to be suitable. Additionally, max wifi speeds will be halved when used in repeater mode, same as any other brand of repeater.
Hi, Just received it this morning
I plugged it in and connected via an ethernet cable from my existing router to test it. My laptop then found a new wi-fi signal and once I put in the password that's stuck to the travel router it connected. I'm not sure about speed but I watched some youtube stuff without any buffering.
To boost an existing wireless connection you simply plug it in (to mains) and connect to it using the password stuck on the travel router. A wizard then opens where you put the password of the Uni / Hotel wireless and it connects and boosts this.
It also has 2 USB sockets, one that only charges phones etc. and one that charges but can also be used to transfer data.
For the price I'm dead chuffed

Either boost the existing WI-FI or plug into an ethernet cable and create your own Wi-fi. Haven't received it yet but worth a punt for £17. Seems useful on holiday if the hotel has the same coverage issue
If the source wifi network is first accessed via a web browser to enter user / password rather than direct network SSID and password, I doubt this item will be able to perform the wifi repeater function that you suggest. Should be no issue with ethernet to wifi though.

Cold because Sony cripple the camera if you unlock the bootloader.

Since when did that have to do with this deal? Seriously, so many people on here really don't understand the concept of HUKD.

It's important because a lot of people buy phones that don't want to be locked into whatever software is currently on them. Sony crippling the camera if you choose to opt out of their take on Android means this phone is a poor deal for people like me.

You're right. Many poeple don't understand the concept of HUKD.

The concept of HUKD is that people can use whatever criteria they wish to decide whether a deal is Hot or Cold for them personally. Price is a common choice but many other criteria can be used to determine heat. Such as the quality of the item or perhaps the features of the item.

Mine (2 not 4) are also quiet at 20% duty-cycle but are the Rev 2 above. Are there other better quality at a decent price?
no, ignore that message above, not pwm lol
VDisillusioned
Did you have them running full speed all of the time or use the PWM?

PWM obviously, thats what I bought them for.
pimpMe
These are noisy as hell, I had 4 in my gaming computer and had to take them out and buy better quality. Waste of money.

Not the ones that I have in my machine here. It's absolutely dead quiet in the house now and my machine is just humming quietly in the corner. If I game it will get louder but no-one else will notice because it won't be that loud - and that's with the fan control regulation set quite aggressively. Did you have them running full speed all of the time or use the PWM?

I've been able to charge two devices at once - I regularly charge both a HUDL and iPhone or two iPhones at the same time with one of these. Charging an iPad took ages though so I swapped back to using the plug that came with it.
Thanks for this. Have one in white, which cost £9.99 and it's very useful. I only use it for topping up phone, mp3 or tablet (Nexus) and it works fine for these, though haven't needed to try two ports at the same time. Ordered, as at this price it is a bargain and will be no great loss if it doesn't last forever. It just depends what you need it to do for you.
Our tabs seem to charge at about 7 amps so, in practice, this item won't work.
I've got one and you can charge something through one usb and the plug together, but plug in two USB devices and neither will charge.
I'm sure I bought these at screwfix a couple of years ago and was only a couple of quid. I use it for my projector and haven't had any issues at all with power cuts etc although I don't really use the usb option.

I should get your sockets checked ! Fits mine OK .

Yeah your probably right all my house sockets are the wrong size I wondered why my fridge doesn't work. Do you work for the company, did you check my masterplug before they sent it to me?
Don't be silly ! unless they make different size plugs , which I doubt , then you badly need a qualified electrician to check your sockets . No actually I work as a signaller for Network Rail . If it doesn't fit and your sockets are OK ,return it -no hassle with Amazon - If you're just Trolling ,Troll on but make a better job of it next time ,this feeble attempt does make you look rather silly (to be polite !)(_;)

Surge protection - nonsense, does not work on these type of devices or extension leads. Marketing gimmick
Got mine and got the tech data sheet with it ,it is surge protected -do you want the full info ? It does fit the socket ,it does charge a Moto G and a Nexus 7 at the same time ,and if it were not surge protected Masterplug would be pretty daft to offer a lifetime guarantee on any connected device . Rustyspoons I would love to hear your reply -maybe you could enlighten us and elaborate on your comment - I think Masterplug would be interested too !
