I'll be there, but feel sorry for the staff that are about to be made redundant! ahh well one mans loss etc!
#4
Such a shame. A city centre without a Woolworths is no city centre at all.

Was in a huge Woolies this morning in Bristol. Nothing left worth having. All the good stuff had gone already... No electrical dept left at all, nothing anyone would want in the CD or DVD sections, just a poor selection of budget games left...

So unless their saving stuff for their sale I don't see the point ???
#6
Popped in there today and it was pretty grim.
Was looking for some lightbulbs but had a glance round and it was like a badly stocked Poundland. Some stuff was dirt cheap but was hard to work out how stuff was priced. I got two items with price tags of £7.50 and paid £2.30 in total so pretty cheap but had no idea till I got to the till.

Poor Woolies :(

#9
Anyone know any employees to clarify what sort of reductions might be made?

It will be a sad day when Woolies dissapears forever
#12
So sad.

My mum(now 53) had her first Saturday job - at the age of 15 behind the counter of the Woolies in Shawlands, Glasgow.
End of an era, she says.

you know what's strange?
my local woolies looks no different now than before. shelves are still full, prices have barely moved. 10% off most stuff 20% off a few and very few have 30% nothing more than that, yet people are talking of massive sales all over the country and hardly anything left.
#14
T'is a shame :-(
#15
Ahh i wonder how good the sale will be. May pop in to the argyle st, glasgow tomorrow.

agreed, don't think i'll be rushing down tomorrow tho', learnt my lesson from doing that last week when they had their HUGE 50% off "sale"!!!!!

I know, it almost feels wrong - it's like animals picking at a carcas!! The woolies in Brighton is a complete tip now, more like poundstretcher - and the 50% nonsense has put me right off anyway! There's nothing they sell that you can't get anywhere else so I hardly go in there anyway - and their shops all feel kinda dirty and old!!
#19
If you can get a good bargain great ,if there's any stock left

Makes you think that if they had been more competitive 6-12 months ago how much better they would be doing now.
#21
leigh (near wigan) will never be the same without woolies :-(

Yeh same at mine nothing seems to have changed yet.
Not a bargain in site !!
#25
I'm guessing they're not going to bring down the price of game consoles!?
#26
Went in the Bolton store on Monday and could definately tell they were thinning out stock wise. All the same stuff out on shelves. Unpriced merchandise etc. Looked grim.

rumour is they will be selling chart games at £39.99 instead of £49.99

We've got one of the large depot style Woolies locally, and they have gradually been consolidating and reducing the amount of stock on the shop floor for the last 4-5 months, so we kind of gathered they may be in trouble.

It does make you feel a bit like a scavenger picking away at Woolies carcass, but a bargain is a bargain (if there is any left to be had) and had they moved with the times they may not have been in their current situation.

Mark my words though, this isn't the last the of the 'big' high street names that potentially may go under in the current economic climate, especially as the crunch is only just starting to 'bite'.

Ours closed down about six months ago. I can't say I've missed it. They completely lost direction, didn't know who they were catering for and lost their share in most markets. DVDs and CDs were cheaper (and better range) in Zavvi, HMV, etc. Cheap items were cheaper in pound shops, Wilkos, etc. To me it seemed they were placing their faith in one off special deals on unbranded TVs and mobile phone deals and childrens fancy dress costumes, and stopped stocking useful stuff.
#33
Anyone know what the Warwick or Lemmington Spa site is like? Heading that way tomorrow and may pop in if they have plenty of stock.

Better still buy the whole woolworths group for £1  But I don't think I'd sleep at night, with it being so many millions of pounds in debt.

I can remember going into woolworths as a kid, over 25 years ago. It used to be a major thing, going into woolworths. The only thing that made the shopping trip.
#35
How many Wilkos stores are there I much prefer Wilkos to Wollies anyway
#36
Very sad, the high street wont be the same with Woolies :-(

I went into my local store on Friday and it was manic, didnt see many bargains though.
