I'm even thinking about buying one myself at this price.
Just after I order my 32" LCD tv for the bedroom.

What is the difference between this and the premium version and more importantly, how much would it cost to buy the extra bits and bobs to 'upgrade' this to the functionality of the premium version?

Cheers

Core gets no hard drive and no HD cables, and comes with a wired controller.

Premium gets hard drive, wireless controller and comes with component cables to enable HD through your compatible display. Also some have a chrome dvd drive frontage.

Cost to buy a core then the bits is quite a bit more than a premium.

Great deal.

Any idea of an expiry date?

Ideally I would prefer a premium myself, but not unless I can get a price sub £200, without any games.
#10
Just bought myself one as a spare, which I will probably end up using to play WMV-HD files. I already have a spare HD lead and a spare wireless controller, so its a great deal for me.
Also worth buying now before the Hitachi 79 and Benq drive models start appearing over here.
#11
you can probably upgrade cheaply enough.

Hard disk can be picked up on some ebay stores for around the £50 mark, then get yourself a VGA cable £13 www.cclonline.co.uk (much better than the hd cable that comes with the premium anyway)

So for just over £200 you have basically got yourself something better that the premium version (minus the wireless pad - wired with core) (and minus the metallic DVD strip)
#12
Looks good.

Whats the story with the Hitachi 79 and Benq drive models? Are they inferior or something?
#13
Are they un-flashable drives? (cant play copies)

Yep unflashable at the moment, although the Benq is quieter!

Quidco £5.25 has just validated for me :)
#16
I would imagine that flashing the drive invalidates the warranty doesnt it?
#17
the premium is 249.99 here as well

and yes flashing the drive requires you to remove the case which invalidates the warrenty, plus there will hopefully be a patch out to stop pesky pirates using the discs they burn :)
#18
Great deal, but by the time you add a memory card, a wireless controller and the VGA cable you are looking at £205ish (-£10 from selling wired control) - £5.25 quidco - £7.50 in Boots points correct?

Would this perhaps be a better deal?

Amazon bundle at £265 - http://tinyurl.com/29qhqc

Sell Gears of War, Crackdown & Prey for £45-50
Sell Component cable for £5

Then you have the 20GB HD and it only costs ~£215 and you could sell the HD and buy a small memory card to lower the cost further.

Just trying to weigh up my options, as I said, I am looking for a Premium bundle for about £200.
#19
No patch as of yet to stop playing copies with the Spring update released at 10:00 am this morning.

Tested on flashed Samsung & Hitatchi drives with no reported problems.

Just take it back to Asda and get it replaced.

I recently took back a 5 month old used freeview box that I paid for with my Canadian credit card, and they gave me a cash refund.

I did have a receipt, but the idea behind this would be to get an exchange, not a refund, which should be fine without a receipt.

Is it okay to use Live with a flashed console and copied games?

I have heard that copied versions of Gears of War can give you unlimited ammo in online play, giving away the fact that you have a copied game - but I dont know how true this is.

"2. Offer ends on May 30, 2007, or the date that Amazon.co.uk withdraws the offer."

Guess they chose to withdraw it then?

Are my figures still reasonably accurate otherwise?

I also have a £25 amazon voucher to help lighten the load on my pocket.

Seriously, this is a bargain!!

I wanted a premium system initially but bought a core for £140 through Amazon in germania. I bought an extra official microsoft controller (wireless) at play.net for £19.99, I have bought about 6 top games (each for less than £15) including PGR3 (£12) Call of duty 2 (£13), Lara Croft (£12) sonic (£17) and splinter cell double agent (£13) plus got a new memory stick for £10 (marked incorrectly at blockbuster)- so for much less than a premiums system I am up and running with everything!!!!! t\he only think I am missing is the hard drive but I'll get that in a month or two - when the new 120gb hdd is in the shops everyone will be flogging the smaller 20gb ones on ebay!!

I would suggest grabbing this current deal and getting all the accessories seperately !! worked for me!!
#25
For now flashed xbox 360's and XBOX live are working fine.

They might be able to ban you from Live, or disable your 360 from playing copies in future though.

Why would anybody need a spare?

For when it's 18 months old and it breaks. :whistling:

Don't shoot me down, I was only joking.
#28
Haha, true though!

However ive had mine since launch with no problems whatsoever (touches wood!)
#29
Damn, timing all wrong, good commission month at end of June, cannot buy now...great find though...added heat!!
#30

For linkup play etc ;)

I grabbed a core from Play.com when it was this price as I wanted a newer drive (the samsung on my old one was being picky on media) - great bargain.

As for the patch to stop backups, well I'm afraid that looks like it's a long time coming as even the rumour of the Spring update detecting backups (rls'd today) brought a brand new firmware hack to compensate for it.

Who know's what will happen in the future but 18 months down the line since it was released and backups are still working using the original fw update.
#32
X360 is still good but after playing around with PS3 I am finding it seems to work a lot better on SDTV plus I am now quite certain has better frame rates in general. HD would be good as it comes I would think. Just seems a lot more polished/refined somehow (and I'm not talking about the casing) being far far quieter and having a lot more inbuilt features. I may put my X360 Premium on sale here if anyone is interested.

Right but what about when playing on XBL. Surely your backups would get detected.
#34
They dont get detected, and flashed drives cant get detected (stealth protection?)

They can however detect backup/copied disks but havent put this feature in the spring update.

At worst once the detection of backup games eventually comes into force, they will just stop backups/copies from being played on your system.

If Microsoft just disable peoples xboxes, they could shoot themselves in the foot, people might decide to get a PS3 or WII instead.

So for now, your safe to flash your drive and play backups/copies but who knows what the future will hold.

At worst you will probably end up a few months down the line wuth an xbox unable to play copies but can still play originals. They could also ban you from XBOX live if they wanted, but again Microsoft would be loosing out if this was the case.

You are very likely to be wrong. There is a big risk in updating to the Spring update. Microsoft have a sneaky way of implementing the ability detect hacking but then NOT acting on it for a while. Therefore, if you've updated and are currently connected to live on a backup system, its extremely likely that at this point they already know about you, and you'll be one of the many banned when the mass banning begins (who knows when).

Of course, the 5.3 FW update MAY stop them from detecting you, but until they start banning this won't be confirmed.

Finally, of course, this is all speculation - but as for me, i'm going to wait and not update / play any new games that contain the update UNTIL i hear something about the banning. Theres so much to play thats been released up until now! Why waste money!
#36
Just ordered, thanks op
#37
I doubt Microsoft will ban anyone from Live for running backup games, theres no advantage for them. Microsoft get money from Publishers paying Microsoft to release games on the 360, they get £40 a year from every Live user and profits from Live Marketplace and XBLA

So far people running backups aren't costing Microsoft money and banning them would actually loose Microsoft a lot of money

If it forces people to buy originals, then I think you'll find they will. Whats a mere £30 (or less if you think about it) - one game?

Also, the evidence speaks for itself - think about it - it's exactly what they did with the original Xbox....

Something interesting in the Boots description of the product, where it says you simply hook it up to a broadband connection to experience Xblox Live Silver/Gold etc......Now Ive only owned a Premium, but isnt one of the drawbacks of the Core the fact that without a hard drive, you can't go on xbox live ? If so, someone might be able to skank a few more points off Boots with a complaint letter afterwars citing bad product description :-)
