The X-Mini Capsule is the world's first pocketsized speaker with built in bass support and it's own rechargable battery. It is small in size but it more than makes up for it's stature with uncompromising sound quality and volume.

The Secret: Vacuum Bass - Pioneering their patented technology, the X-Mini can be extended upwards like an accordian. It is this expandible vacuum which mimics the resonance characteristics of a subwoofer, giving the Capsule a crisp, full bodied sound and volume. The vacuum, can be extended during playback and closed for compact storage.

Everyday Speaker For Every Occasion: The X-Mini is one of the smallest speakers in the world with justifiable sound quality for daily portible useage. The integrated rechargable batteries offer up to 8 hours of contstant playback from a full charge. Due to it's portability and high quality sound output the Capsule is the ideal accessory for an ever growing range of portable electronic devices; Mp3 players, laptops, multimedia players, mobile phones, portable games consoles.

These get great reviews and £11.95 is the cheapest I've seen them at, but there's a new model out - £19.99 on Amazon - XMI X-mini II Mini Speaker. The new version can connect together apparently, has better battery life and is a bit louder.

I'ma speaker collector of sorts, and I have one of these. Not bad for a speaker smaller than a golf ball, but it's nothing special. You won't go wow like everyone says, and you won't use it very much at all. A novelty but nothing more.

Much much better sound than my default laptop speakers, was really pleased until the cable went dodgy and now all it does is hiss.. On a forum somewhere someone from the company acknowledged it's a known problem and said they were offering replacements, but they never replied to my emails. Just spent £3.50 on ebay on replacement cables (would be a bit more if you also need a mini-usb to usb cable).

3 questions for you...
1. Have you tried the new version?
2. Am looking for a portable speaker to travel around with me for use with my MP3 player and phone - can you offer a recommendation?
3. Have you listened to the Nokia MD8?

I would be really grateful for your views!! Cheers!! :)

I haven't tried the new version, but reviews indicate a slight improvement, which I don't think is saying much. There's the possibility to link new models together in (apparently) infinite numbers to give more volume. All this does is make a more expensive, less portable louder speaker with just the same lack of bass.

My favouraite portable speaker is my Saitek A-100 iPhonic Pocket Speaker (or something like that). It's awesome, but sadly not available in this country any more it seems.

My next favourite is the Altec Lansing Orbit Speaker. Lots of bass and a good sound. According to this page the olde version is available at Tesco for less than £10... a real bargain. However my Tesco is still selling them for £20. There is a newer more well built version with attached cable, but the differences are small soundwise to my ears.

I heard the Nokias. I wasn't that impressed. They're not bad, but not good enough.

Thanks for taking the time, Pokey. Much appreciated.

Time for a trip to tescos... I spotted some at my local branch a few nights ago... fingers crossed they're still there :)

ETA Nono of those speakers left in my local Tescos stores. Boohoo
