Is this better than an Arcade?

In a word: Yes

In several more, 60GB of space instead of about 0.25GB for downloading, installing games (when the NXE update comes out in November) and patches :) Also comes with a network cable... which I don't think the Arcades do?

I want to get a 360 as my old one broke (RROD) which I replaced with a PS3. Miss playing Halo.

Just trying to get the best value one

Probably most people will say "yes" that the 60GB version or the ELITE are better than the Arcade but as we are all free to express our opinions I will give you mine.

I recently decided to buy the XBOX 360 mainly because of FABLE II, yes a long wait since the XBOX 360 was relased but I finally got it last month with the FABLE II Pub games.

In my hunt for a cheap deal I wanted to go for the ELITE biggest hard drive, accesories, etc.

In the end I decided to go for the Arcade and this is the reason why:

I bought the Arcade with one game for £129.00

Traded the game at the same time and got £24 in-store credit for the game.

When you buy the console they give you controllers for £19.99 and the charge and play for £9.99 so I got these two extras with the console and they let me use the in-store credit to pay for the extras so not bad deal.

A few days before that I saw a deal here that the XBOX 360 120GB HDD was £59.99 in COMET instore so I was quite lucky to find one.

So in the end I got the ARCADE with the extra controller, charge and play and the 120 GB HDD for less than £200

I have a very good HDMI cable anyway which I used in my PS3 so I just swap them, so no need for the cable that comes with the ELITE

Now a lot of people could think this was a bit of trouble to find all these like that and that I would be better off buying the ELITE instead but doing it the way I did I have 3 pros and 2 cons:

1. I get a 256MB memory card extra which I would not have with the ELITE
2. I get the HDD transfer cable
3. The most important one to me is that the XBOX 360 is unfortunately a very unrealiable machine so with the ELITE if I have a problem half way through the 1 year guarantee I would have to potentially return everything including my 120 GB HDD losing all my stuff XBOX live demos, movies, games, saved games, etc, but the way I did it if the XBOX 360 stops working I just take the ARCADE XBOX 360 to the shop and they will give me a brand new SEALED box and my separate 120GB HDD will be at home.

Only downside with my deal was:
1. No headset
2. Is white (not an issue for me though)

So in my opinion based on the way I got my XBOX 360 the ARCADE was the best option for me, but again I was lucky to get the 120GB HDD at that price.

Overall I would say if you going to buy an XBOX 360 and not play online the ARCADE is your best bet and best price, otherwise the others are better.

Good bargaining! Just F.Y.I Im sure that Gametstation are selling the 120Gb drives 2nd hand for £59.99, at least that was what was labelled up in the Maidenhead store. The 60G pre-owned ones were £49.99 as well so I had thought it was a bargain!

Your trade in prices are not permanent and can go up or down (but more likely down), therefore the pricing info you give can also go up or down (trade in price lower = overall price higher).

The price you paid for a 120GB hard drive is not reflective of typical prices.

You can get a data transfer cable from Microsoft for free by phoning them on the customer services helpline (free phone from memory).

When you have a problem, you do NOT send back the hard drive. Microsoft specifically tell you to return just the machine.

has been this price on amazon for quite a while http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-Console-Hard-Drive/dp/B001DTD0WM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1224688052&sr=8-2
loads of places are selling this with a new released game for £169 and various 2 older game packages for £169 so not really hot...

Can you tell me which places are doing the deals for £169 with a game please? I have checked Gamestation (which do 2 selected games for £169), but others seem to be more expensive.

still hot interms for what you get for your money, tho ;)

Go onto EBAY and get yourself a Cheap one with a 20 Gig HD, then upgrade the HD to 120 gig yourself for 35 quid. I See no reason to purchase a 60 gig Version when u can get the 20 gig version cheaper and upgrade it yourself. easy to do!! done loads

Cowpie comments like that are so blinkered & uninformed

why get a ps3? i have yet to see ANY proof that a ps3 is a better games console than the 360

hardware wise

the ps3 has more storage and a stronger cpu
the 360 has a stronger gpu, & better memory handling.

so from what i can tell, they are both on a par with each other BUT

the 360 has a better games catelogue
is cheaper
has a better control pad (imo)
has a 3 year warranty

the ps3 "looks" better
is better built
is a hi def blu ray player

so over all i dont think there is an over all winner, so it comes down to what you want it for.

no point getting a ps3 if you want all the 360 exclusives

no point getting a 360 if you want the 1 or 2 ps3 exclusives (& i see mgs4 exclusivity has been lost now so basically you are talking sony entertainment stuff) or a hi def movie player.

both consoles have their strengths

normally i agree but with the launch 360's being poorly built there are a lot of duffers on the bay now.

my 360 gave up the ghost fully (after i had kept it limping along) and i decided a falcon based arcade was the way to go and use the bits off my old premium

by all accounts the new 60gb version runs cooler and quieter to that of the old premium.

it does, it uses the falcon chipset, uses less eleccy too.

the even new chipset is out soon which will be better still (45nm on both the cpu AND gpu)
#30
my local store is showing at £167, unless they just haven't put the new labels on yet.
#31
Do the newer models sound quieter? My 3 year old 360 sounds like a harrier jump-jet when playing games! Really annoying.

short answer = no, but come the dashboard update in november then you will eliminate the disc drive noise if you load the game onto the hdd

most places are doing £190 with ANY game so saving £10 but good spot anyway

Thought I'd add this:

Just wanted to point out that MGS4 is still a PS3 exclusive and so the exclusvity lives on is still there (has not been confirmed by Kojima for a 360 release...yet).

The PS3 is MUCH more reliable across the range as compared to the 360 which used to have severe overheating (RROD) problems on older models. The problems are still around but far fewer. Oh and the 3 year warranty only covers RROD, for everything else the warranty is still 1 year I think...

Xbox 360 is good for shooters (Halo 3, Gears of War) and RPGs (mass effect, fable 2, star ocean 4) while the ps3 has good action adventure games (ratchet and clank, mgs4, uncharted).

The ps3 has PS Home and the xbox 360 has the NXE (new xbox live experience). Online multiplayer is free on the ps3 but you have to pay £40 per year for the 360. The 360 has exclusive DLC for Resident evil 5, Fallout 3, Tomb Raider, GTAIV while the ps3 has exclusive content for far cry 2.

I know that this isn't a major factor (it was for me!) but the xbox 360 has no built-in wifi so you'd have to have your router near the TV or you need a Wifi Adapter for around £50. Wifi is built-in in a ps3.

In terms of controllers, I personally think that for shooters the 360 has a better controller but the ps3 controller is better for action adventure style games (imho)

Future exclusive releases:

X360:

Fable 2
Gears of War 2
Halo 3 Recon
Star Ocean 4
Halo Wars
Alan Wake
Left 4 Dead
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Splinter Cell 5 (not exactly exclusive, also on PC and DS)
Mass Effect Pt 2
Huxley*
Theseis
Champions Online *
Warhound*
Divinity 2: Ego Draconis*

PS3:

Socom: Confrontation
Little Big Planet
Resistance 2
Killzone 2
White Knight Chronicles
God of War 3
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Yakuza 3
Infamous
Heavy Rain
Gran Tourismo 5
Motorstorm Pacific Rift
Afrika
MAG
Free Realms
DC Universe Online*
LA Noir

NOTE: Games marked with * also have a PC release

I'd say that in the future releases are balanced between the two tilted BUT the xbox 360 is a much more cheaper and established package.

----

anyway good deal...but has been around on amazon for this price for a long time and gamstation offer it with a free game or £169. I think that shall abstain...

err.. everything goes down in price eventually, its hardly a surprise is it?

Perfectly happy with it, prices go down, more people buy it, more developers write great games for it, everyone wins, except Sony.

Hmm that list is a little light on the 360 exclusives here to say the least.

You might want to also add

Halo Wars
Alan Wake
Left 4 Dead
GTAIV DLC
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Splinter Cell 5
Mass Effect Pt 2
Huxley

You missed half of the 360s big games for 09 That at least makes it a much better comparison.

I have to say it was a bit of a surprise for me to find my 20GB Pro obsolete in less than 10 months after my purchase, with a new bigger better version costing almost half the price I paid.
Most things drop in price but these have dropped ALOT in the time frame!
