arcade is the best value but i recommen getting a 20gb/120gb when you buy an arcade. if xbox comes in at around 115 pounds i think i will buy one.

Whilst this is probably true, it has not been confirmed yet.

Great news, I'm expecting it to be announced by Microsoft themselves soon though, as both Japan and America have had their official Autumn price cuts occur during the last few weeks and this could well be Europe's price drop (all to coincide with the BIG Autumn update & Xbox Experience download next month).

they can't even give them away now!!!!!!!!!!!!
stick to PS3!

I hope not, a £10 price drop on the 60GB is a bit skimpy!

unless you want a blu ray player, then why?

for every game which is brilliant to PS3 there are 5 which are exclusive to xbox.

*generally* ports are better on the 360, the new 360's dont have the build quality issues of the older ones, and its cheaper.

imo there is no "better" console out of the 2, its what suits your needs better. For me its the 360, i use a pc for my hi def media centre and that plays HDDVD and blu ray and personally prefer the exclusives on the xbox..

Yer i knew the arcade was dropping to around £130 - but didnt know the premium would drop again

well we have one, and we have nothing but trouble with it
laser burns on disks when it hasnt been moved, wont play dvd's straight away, have to eject and reinsert the disk at least 3 times
have to pay to play online
not wireless, have to pay for the adapter. by the time you have done this you may aswell just buy a ps3!!
matter of opinion i suppose

Aren't official prices right now, £159.99 Arcade - £199.99 Premium/Pro and £259.99 Elite?

Edit: which looks like a £30 off on all.

I have all three machines [PS3, Wii and Xbox 360] and I can quite honestly say that I barely touch my Wii [har-har]. I have only recently acquired the PS3 and the controller is quite frankly **** for pretty much anything apart from footie games - in comparison to the Xbox 360 controller. As a media machine the PS3 p*sses all over the Xbox; just in terms of the machine being silent, blu-ray etc..
As a games machine the Xbox 360 wins hands down with exclusive titles, multi-platform titles - with excellent online play. The online play is the Xbox's killer feature.
So Xbox for games, PS3 for a media machine and a few very good exclusives! And the Wii to mess around with your mates - but the novelty of it soon wears off!
#12
Sorry to sound like a total n00b but what do you get extra with the premium and elite?
#13
Darren, you're complaining about paying £3 a month to play online after spending £150+ on a system? Where are your priorities?? You dont have to play online - a silver account affords 90% of the experience.

laser burns on disks when it hasnt been moved, wont play dvd's straight away, have to eject and reinsert the disk at least 3 times

If you think that's normal, then you are wierd. Of course that's not normal. MS do free repairs for first year, 3 years for RRoD. Get it sorted already.

not wireless, have to pay for the adapter. by the time you have done this you may aswell just buy a ps3!!

Online gaming while wireless opens up a whole new plethora of potential problems. Next doors microwave, cordless telephones and mobile phones all interfere with the signal, meaning that clan game you just got disconnected from could have been avoided. Be smart, play wired.

Besides, its stupid to make the wireless point when you're complaining about the price online. Read something like http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/10-things-microsoft-doesn-t-tell-you-your-xbox-360-can-do-464200 which might help.

Overall, the 360 has the better gaming community, the bigger game database and is cheaper. That's why this price drop is good. That being said, I just ordered an Elite (to work alongside a premium and a US arcade) a week ago from Gamestation, but I took advantage of their 3 for £70 offer on games with the new console, and ordered Infinite Undiscovery, Fable 2 Special Edition and Fallout 3 Special Edition, which total £130.

Premium and Elite have HDMI connection, only get the cable with the Elite though. Premium gives you a Composite connector for HD experience.

Premium has 20GB HDD, Elite has 120GB. Arcade has nothing.

Premium and Elite come with wireless controllers.

no matter how many troubles a 360 gives you at the end it's all worth it because the games just play abnormally incredible compared to the lame PS3...i mean the ps3 pad, buttons, left and right triggers just feel cheap and tacky. I've played games on the 360 then the same port on the ps3 and i can honestly say the 360 makes u more "in" the game than the ps3.

Sony are thieves that overprice everything and PSN online is disgraceful, i'd rather pay 30 quid a year for xbox live and get a far better online experience.

sounds like the laser is knackered. send it back........ happens now and then, but that isnt really MS's fault.

no wireless? the pads are wireless, and to be honest a wireless gaming adapter is less than £15 if you look around paying to play online, true and if the sony online ever gets ittself properly sorted to compete with live, 1 one centralised gaming centre then that would be a good point (i hope it happens, maybe then live will be free)

but like i said, each to their own, the ps3 is clearly the better option for some.

I have a premium at the moment, but it makes noises like it's got a badger in the dvd drive. Is the elite any quieter?

All 3 have hdmi ports

All 3 have wireless controllers

Arcade has 256mb.

He means wireless wi-fi. Not controllers.

I think its a moot point really. If you want wireless then get it, otherwise dont make people who dont need it and dont want to pay a premium price at the start buy something they wont be using.

Remember with the new Autumn update you can install your games onto the hard drive, so the dvd drive won't be spinning and making a noise anymore. :)

Quick question, if playing a game available on both xbox and ps3 through HDMI is there any difference picture quality wise between the two on an hdtv? I'm a casual gamer so won't really miss any 'exclusive' titles and at this price the arcade is very tempting. Already have BD player so don't want to spend extra for ps3 if gameplay is the same!

Oh and one more quick question :P, I remember reading somewhere that xbox can now copy the games onto its drive and use the disk just to authenticate which might hence be quieter. Is this the case?

Thanks!

suppose. but it's still noisy when playing live arcade games. And it's impossible to watch a dvd on the thing. i really like the console, but it's so damn NOISY.

The 360 seems to do better than the PS3 in cross platform titles overall, with several PS3 versions of games either having a lower resolution, having no anti-aliasing, or suffering from frame rate issues. It was more of an issue with older titles and developers seem to be getting to grips with coding for the PS3 now, but it still happens, the new TNA Impact game being one recent example.
#28
ZOMG anyone who buys a Wii ahead of the Xbox 360 Premium needs to be shot, unless they already have an Xbox. Otherwise you really are thick. Come on, the Wii sucks! No DVD playback, no hardrive, no High Definition, no serious games, no Gears of War, no Grand Theft Auto etc etc.

Agree with you there, if the only real difference is the harddrive and can get afterwards if I need, seen them in Grainger Games for cheap if needed, and I'm sure you can buy the wireless adaptors if needs be.

Spend the extra on more controllers or games or something.

Cheers people! You made up my mind.

From MCV:

Woolworths told MCV in a statement:

"The Christmas 2008 Woolworths Big Red Book is not released until the first week of October and, until that date, remains a confidential document.

"There are several draft editions in existence, with prices, products and descriptions varying dependent on the draft.

"Woolworths will not comment directly on the speculation that has appeared on various gaming websites as it is commercially sensitive information."

If these pictures are from the Big Red Book, then it could be this is the permenent price over the Xmas shopping period, not just for next week.

The point is, there's a ton of content on Live that you can download. You're not going to fit much on the 256MB memory unit that comes with the Arcade. There are free demos for every single XBLA game, free demos for many disc based games, dozens of XBLA games, movies and TV shows that you can rent, plus game add-ons, gamer pics and themes. There's a lot of free add-ons if you look through the list, for example, an entire extra course for Tiger Woods 08. There are also map packs for FPS games, extra cars for Forza 2 etc. You don't need to have a full Gold account to download anything on Live. You can use a free Silver account to do that, although you get a 30 day Gold account with every Xbox 360 anyway if you want to try it out before you pay.
#32
heat and rep added (even through i already have a 360)
#33
Hopefully this is true, the price cuts in the US doubled the 360 sales, so its probably been a bit of an incentive for MS to follow through with it over here.

Won't be able to take advantage of this though as I already have two 360's, a launch day premium thats still happily chugging away which my girlfriend uses and a Halo 360 that I got last year. No RROD's yet thank god .

I would only consider the Arcade if you get a better deal by buying the HDD seperate, with the fall update the HDD will be even more usefull. Buying an arcade and soldiering on without an HDD will mean your missing out on ALOT.

The reason for this is the GPU in the ps3 is based on the geforce7.

it cannt do HDR lighting effects at the same time as antiailasiing so you can only do 1 or the other.

Purpose made PS3 games its not an issue, it has 7 cores, so one of those can do the AA, but ports being ports they never take proper advantage of the hardware so it often just gets dropped.

This was something i had to put up wiht on my xbox 1 getting sloppyps2 ports :(

ps GET a harddisk. better load times, no worries abotu space for saved games and loads of free downloads.... not just demos but maps etc which add morte to your game

And what about people who realise wireless is a bad idea for gaming and have no problem running Ethernet?

I think that my PC is fine, and a cheap console (£130 - cheaper than a PS3) would suit me well...

Blu-Ray etc is fine IF you will actually use it - I certainly wouldn't!

You might think the PS3 ****** all over the 360 for media, but frankly my original Xbox running XBMC is even better, albeit without HD support (Which, before you ask, is useless for me - I have a 32" TV, and i'm not buying a smaller TV. Nor do I fancy spending £300+ on a new TV to play my £130 console on...)
#36
The 360 is easily the best machine for playing game and online play. It just wipes the floor with the ps3. Theres still only one game actually worth buying a ps3 (MGS4) for and nothing really on the horizon. Gears 2, Fallout 3 with exclusive content, Left For Dead thats just in the next month or so.

If you like playing online forget about the ps3. No proper voice comms, not integrated friends list or lobby system its just rubbish.

I you like games and you want the best you get a 360 end of story. Wii is just for kids IMO. SPort is funny and its a good party console but it hardly ever gets used...
#37
I've also got a Wii and planning to get a PS3 next month as it will have a few games I really want by then (namely MGS4 and Littlebig Planet), so despite having a Halo 3 avatar and SPARTAN in my namer I don't consider myself a fanboy :-D.

I believe every console has its place, I still love the Wii even though its been getting less use lately, the 360 gets the majority of my attention but I can definately see the appeal of the PS3.

Lets try not toderail this thread into another console flamewar, but no doubt it will probably end up that way :whistling:.

Also has the highest percentage of really bad games.

I work at woolies and not heard anything about this. The picture looks like its from the new catalogue which is launching soon but not on Monday. I think this price cut will not start from Monday or next week but some time later after Microsoft confirm it. I cannot see this being a Woolies promotion, this must be a Microsoft Price cut.

Will find out more on Sunday and let you guys know.
