Being a bit harsh there, its NOT the fixed RRP yet. Try finding currently an Arcade at Play, HMV, Gamestation, Woolies for 129.99.....you can''t until there is an official Microsoft price drop.

So it currently (until the offiial price drop beats the competition by 20-30 quid) so hot from me.

The revised prices yes have been posted, but nowhere is selling them at the revised prices yet, other than this deal from Amazon, so the poster has found a good deal. *correction, Argos now has them listed Arcade for 129.99 and premium for 169.99

The official price drop is today.
Just wait for the people who acutaly manage the pricing to wake up, then there will be tonnes of 360's at this price.
Also, shopto have the prices down as well.

Just noticed that Argos are doing a free £10 Gift Voucher offer for all orders over £100 - so with their price drop to £129 it seems a pretty good deal :)

Microsoft officially announced the drop at the beginning of the week stating Friday the 19th as the official date.

Thats not a bad idea!. £127 for an Arcade

Cold for me since this is just the standard price. Wait for play.com to sell it for £115-£120 then I'll vote hot.

Hot from me, the arcade only comes with a wired controller

This stipulates wireless, that means its very hot in my estimates.

Even if MS have updated the Arcade to now include the wireless, £120 for a Arcade with guaranteed inclusion of a wireless controller in the box is hot.

The only way in my opinion this could be considered non hot would be that it will not be jasper.
#16
if you buy this console, you might want to add £10 for GOW, or/and Halo 3 for £10 (amazon promotion) or/and £20 for COD 4: GOTY edition
Good price.

This is the Arcade which does have a wireless controller, you must be thinking of the Core.

Thanks for the correction, there has been so many different xbox 360's I guess got lost in the confusion.

This is good news because I was feeling I would need to buy a pro 360 to get the wireless controller when I am upgrading to Jasper.

for anyone in the know, can I just ask if the DVD drives in these newer consoles aren't able to have 'special' firmware applied to them so that back-up copies of your games can be played on it?

All you need is a hard drive to play original xbox games. So the Arcade alone wont play original xbox games, but one with a hard drive will.

Actually you're wrong there. The new Liteon drives can't be flashed yet - by ANY means.

There isn't even any custom firmware released for them.

These are the drives that will be in virtually all Xbox 360s from now on. There has been some progress and they will prolly be hacked again in a month or two.

My 9 year old son wants an xbox for Christmas. Can anyone recommend which one I should buy. He likes Halo and I think a wireless controller would be good. I don't really understand all the different versions but don't mind paying a bit extra for the right one. Could you also tell me about online game playing and what we need for that and maybe recommend a few games........(thank you! :santa: )

There are a lot idiots on Xbox Live who use profanity so I wouldn't send a young kid on there. Wait until he at least... hmmm... 13.5

If you want it for Christmas wait for the Jasper revision to be released, its due almost any week, seriously above all else do this.

Then with regards to which console. The logicalest choice would be the Pro (Premium) edition, as you really need to use the hard drive.

The Elite is a waste of money IMHO.

The Arcade version listed here comes with no hard drive, so if you bought this you will really need to buy one separate so you could buy the 120GB hard drive for £80 from Play.

With regards to good games just look down this list for games rated 85% or over and you will be more than sorted

Metacritic Xbox360 Game Scores

For online play you need a live subscription which costs around £35 per year depending where you shop. Although you get 1 month free with the Xbox purchase to see if you like it or not.

Myself I have just bought a PS3, after owning a Xbox360 for a 15 months, and love the fact that online play is completely free. People may argue that its not as good as Microsofts paid live but it does its job and you can't argue with free.

*sticks oar in*

If you're planning to go online a model with a hard drive, although not a must, comes highly recommended. Xbox Live comes with two flavours: Silver and Gold. Silver is FREE and allows you to go online and download demos, trailers, rent films and download original xbox and over 150+ Arcade games. Gold is a paid service (£25/£40 a year depending where you buy a subscription from) and allows you to play games online, get access to new demos/content early, and do video chat between consoles.

All Xbox 360 consoles come with a wireless controller (apart from the original 'core' model that's discontinued), although I would recommend the Xbox 360 Pro model (~£170) as that somes with a 60Gb hard drive, component/scart cable, voice chat headset and a 1 month trial of Xbox Live Gold.

On the subject of games, it depends what he likes to play. Halo 3 is an obvious choice, and the online modes make a vast multiplayer game. It's quite cheap to pick a copy up yourself rather than in a bundle. If you intend to go online I would get a Microsoft Points card. These cards come in 2100/4200 point bundles (~£17/£34) and allow you to buy content on Xbox Live, including the Xbox Live Arcade games. These range from classic retro games, remakes, games normally found on a PC to entirely brand new games with prices between 400-1600 points). Download some game demos and see which games he likes.

Any game with a BBFC 15 rating or above I would say it's probably best not for him to play, with Halo 3 as an exception (the blood is kept to an absolute minimum, if you can see it at all). Anything with a BBFC of 12 or lower is probably okay, and the same applies for the PEGI ratings (anything up to 12+ would probably be okay). The Xbox lets you specify parental controls on it (blocking him from playing games over a specified rating) so he would not be able to download demos of 18 rated games etc.

Hope that helps

Pretty much everything Anthonyuk says too. To explain what the 'Jasper revision' is to the uninitiated, this is a new model of the Xbox 360 (internally, it looks the same on the outside!)

The Jasper version includes a '65nm' GPU. Or in real words a smaller, cooler running graphics chip. A large number of Xbox 360 faults with older machines were attributed to the GPU, whether it was overheating, its thermal paste melting or just generally packing in. The current 'Falcon' version of the 360 in the stores has a smaller, cooler processor than the first models which has helped reduce problems, but this 'Jasper' model should have none of the issues the first batches of the console had.

Microsoft do not release when a particular internal revision of Xbox 360 is going to come out, the 'Jasper' model will not come out as any special 'NEW! DOES NOT MELT' model, it will just appear in shops inside Arcade/Pro/Elite models. You can tell from the manufacturing date (and possibly from other minor revisions in the console).

And regards of the PS3, the only game I'll be buying for mine this Christmas is out next week, Wipeout HD :w00t:

Can I ask do Argos offer extended warranties with the Xbox360 console, if so how much does it cost and for how long.

I had read somewhere that Argos and John Lewis may offer it, and Argos for free, but cannot see a mention of it on the Arogs website, but may have overlooked it.

I'd go for the 60GB model rather than this one. It costs £40 more, but you get a 60GB hard drive instead of a 256MB memory unit, plus you get a headset, a component cable and the cable that's used to connect the console to your router for online play. If you're going to be going online with the 360, you'll need a hard drive to make the most of it because even if you don't want to pay for a full Gold account, there are still loads of demos you can download as well as a fair amount of free game add-ons.

If you look at the 60GB model on Amazon and scroll down, there's a table that shows the differences between the 3 different models.

For online gaming it depends how you want to connect. If you want a wireless connection you need to either buy the official MS adapter, a third party adapter, or you can use homeplugs or even a laptop with wireless in order to make a connection. The cheapest and easiest way is to just plug the 360 into your router with a cable (which comes with the 60GB model and the Elite), but obviously that might not be practical if the 360 and PC are in different rooms.

I agree with the comment above about not waiting for a Jasper model too. I waited for the Falcon model which was supposed to be out "any time now" according to forum posts, and I ended up waiting months. Nobody knows exactly when the Jasper revision will hit the market and even when they do, nobody knows how you will be able to identify one or if it will even make the console any quieter or more reliable. I would just choose the model you want and buy it. You have a 12 month store warranty as well as an additional 3 year warranty if your console gets the RROD.
#36
Heat and rep added.

I'd like to remind people that even if the Jasper was released tomorrow, due to stock levels you won't see it available until after Xmas (unless a shedload of 360s are sold beforehand). That and it's going to hit North America before here.

These will more than likely come with Lite-On drives meaning if you want to backup your games and play them, you'd need to buy a replacement DVD drive for around £30 and take it to someone who has the right kit to transfer the data from one to the other. Of course, this will invalidate your warranty so only go down this route if you are willing to do so.
