ok, innocent question but what is wrong with those drives? (I know google is a click away but my work 'net access is very limited...!) :whistling:

btw, great spot OP, ordered -- very grateful

hitachi 79fk&l's can't be modified using software alone, they require a maximus passkey or similar to put the drive into ModeB so you can flash them with modified firmware to play backups....

PS> Fitting a MAXIMUS key is not an easy soldering job.... whatever google tells you. I've fitted two, one with an FCC and one using Kynar cable, and I would not do either again - way too fine a job for the amateur solderer !!

Basically, pirates do not like them because they are a hassle to get working with dodgy illegal DVD copies of games.

Any chance of a new thread with this as the lead as I agree this is a much better deal. The only thing that might hold it back is that if you're the type of person that wants to play halo 3 then in reality you probably want a pro console with hard drive.
#9
Does anyone know how these are itemised on the receipt? I seem to remember something about being able to return items on a receipt if they are shown at full price & unopnened - I did it with a couple of games from the Wii pack last year

I've got one reserved at store - the strange thing is, the confirmation shows £224.99 and then TOTAL £174.99

The halo thing didn't work for me either

My reasoning is a little different....I use the 360 in my living room mostly for watching HD movies (note - not HD-DVD movies). The Hitachi is a significantly noisier drive than the alternative Benq.

So, what is the downside to the arcade version compared to the pro?

Please excuse my ignorance, but why is that? Also, can you plug any USB hard drive into this XBOX? Thanks.

would this mean that you could take the games back and get £20 back for each?
and also if you added halo 3 for an extra £10 you could return it also for it's full price?

Not quite correct.

If you format it in FAT32, your then knackered because of the file size limit....for HD movie playback you are looking at 8Gb or more in sizes.

The best option is to format the hardrive as a Mac HFS+ drive (as daft as it sounds) and run a program such as MacDrive7 on the PC in order for the PC to load things onto it. Seems strange that a MS product has to use an Apple format.

I have a 2.5" drive in a caddy that takes its power from the 360 itself, meaning no need for an additional power supply. Works a treat.

It depends on how they're set out on the receipt.

When I did it with the Wii stuff, the receipt had everything listed at full price, so I took a game back and they refunded it at full price as it was still sealed. If this is still the case, then you could get approx £40 back, making the console £130 with quidco taken into account. It looks even better if they have a silly £39.99 price tag on the games! :w00t: £80 back, console only £90!!!

I want to stress though that I don't know if it is still the case. If anyone already picked one up, please scan & post the receipt.

ooh thanks for the reply.

what to do... the main reason i want one is to replace my current 360 as it's a bit loud, so i'm hoping to get a benq drive plus the hdmi would be great too.

it's a bit of a gamble especially this close to xmas, it would be good to hear how much for def the games can be taken back for. :)

If you're gonna connect to xbox live, then the console will update itself automatically. If you want to download the update for free, then you can get it HERE.

Never buy any update stuff on ebay, you can always get if for free somewhere on the net.

@sconie,
I had a similar problem this week where they over charged my wife for a reservation I had made online. Charged her £265 versus my original order for £245.... however I did a screen print off at the time, and held them to their original price - they refunded the overcharge.

I always print off my on screen confirmation at the time of reservation - showing the price at the time - may come in handy to you in the future...
