Can you play Forza 3 online with this or do you REALLY need the hard disk ?
#8
This is old isn't it, if it's got a 256mb memory unit? New ones should come with inbuilt memory instead... (could just be an old listing though)
#9
Still £5 cheaper at Game people! :-D

A harddrive is pretty much essential if you want to play properly with your 360. The latest version of the Arcade 360 comes with an internal 256MB memory unit - which means it cannot be removed and taken to another console (the older version it was removable).

Please bare in mind that if you plan to go online you will be prompted to download an update to the dashboard called NXE which takes up 128MB - instantly cutting your supposed 256MB in half.

Given how expensive the official harddrives are to buy separately from the console I cannot emphasise enough how much better a deal it is to buy a 360 that includes the harddrive, whether it is 20GB, 60GB or 120GB - you will need more storage than the Arcade offers.

And yes - the deal at GAME is cheaper than this one - hence the heat being over 1000C and not yet expired.

Lol these days you can buy a New Genuine Hard drive on flebay for £19

Wow even the latest Arcades don't have NXE already preinstalled? That makes no sense :-/

I really struggle with space on my 360 and I have a 20GB drive. I have no demos and have no games instaleld but it's almost full. I've had to delete some DLC to make space.

Yes you can play with out it but you miss out on things. (Forza 3 for instance has a bunch of cars and tracks on the 2nd disk you won't be able to play)

For a 20GB maybe and for that price you are very close to an Elite price (minus any cashed in games)
#14
You can buy the exact same 120gb Western Digital hard drive the Xbox Elite uses for a fraction of the official price - and they have not been banned, in fact it's extremely unlikely they ever would ban them, what for?
The Xbox is not 'hacked' or messed with in any way.
You just need the Xbox hard drive plastic enclosure.

See here for details - http://www.pcworld.com/article/150970/upgrade_your_xbox_360s_hard_drive_on_the_cheap.html

I totally agree with the previous comments about the benefit of using Xbox with a hard drive, especially as they are now starting to issue games with 2 discs, disc 1 will allow you to play the game but you need to install disc 2 to get all the bells and whistles.
That can only grow and grow (see Forza 3 for instance).

These will definitely be pre summer update if someone wants to buy one for homebrew

Aye I got my 360 last year in a brilliant amazon deal, got the £15 refurb hard drive, then got the HMV £30 120GB one so ended up about £10 up and a free 120GB hard drive to boot. Have bought a second console from HMV this week (student discount still being applied = £98.99) but as I said (and you've confirmed) these no longer come with a memory unit. Not to worry for me really, both are legit and will be on live but the other is only for streaming Windows 7 Media Centre and playing DVDs, whereas my old main one with the 120GB is for pwning n00bs on mw2 :) Suppose the external memory unit would have been more useful for playing on either console but never mind

Better still just build your own 250GB drive and get the case from DealExtreme for a total of about £35 and you got a "Super Elite" for £140 albeit not in black..

The 'for' is because Microsoft have lost out on a potential £100 or so for a branded HDD.

But yes nobody has been banned for it yet. I suspect if they ever do anythign about it they will do the same as the third party Memory Units and just block them rather than ban. You hope anyway ;-)

It is tempting as obviously it makes for a nice cheap system

You can play it without the Hard Disk, you just won't be able to save your game progress.
Hard Disk is normally for save game, save the level you are currently on so you do not have to start from the beginning next time you play.

I bought an Elite the other day and it asks you to install disc 2 of Forza 3 in order to load up some cars and tracks into the HD, this uses up 1.9GB so you'd have limitations in the gae if you didn't have an HD.

Yeah, I bought my homebrew Jasper boxes from Sainsburys
#22
I was going make use of this offer, but decided to cross the road and pop into PC World, and use there price promise, and ending up getting for £107.99 instead, the date on the one from PC world was 2009-08-04.
#23
are these exploitable Jasper consoles? Pre June manufacture date?
#24
They will be exploitable, but they'll most likely be the previous model to Jasper. (sorry i can't think of the name!)
