Runs until Sunday 15th, inclusive. Similar to other deals out there, and since the collapse of the Amazon deal and the shameful back-peddling by Argos, probably the best deal out there for this price right now.

Xbox 360 elite or PS3 slim? Are the mulitmedia capabilities that much better on the PS3. PS3 deal in ASDA is £217 with any top 30 game. The Xbox deal here looks a lot better. Any advice?

I'm looking into this a lot at the moment as I'm in the same situation as you, whitty. As far as I can tell, there isn't a great deal of difference. The main pros/cons appear to be as follows:

Xbox: Cheaper, and with better games (and arguably graphics) but you have to pay a lot for stuff you get for free with the PS3, and you don't get the media centre benefits. Xbox Live is better than any PS3 alternative, though.

PS3: Comes with blu-ray DVD and media centre capabilities. But it's not as value for money if you don't need/use that, and the games aren't as good. The popular notion that the PS3 has "better graphics" doesn't seem to stand up either.

All in all, if it's a games console you're after, go for the XBox. Anything extra? Go for PS3. I'm in the market for an XBox.

he was probably banned due to the same reason 1 million other consoles were banned just after MW2 came out. I'm not speculating as to why but RROD has nothing to do with it.

that wont work mate a banned console will be flagged up in their (M/S) system so if you try and send it back for repairs it won't let you proceed. Try it out on their website and enter your serial number if you don't believe me. M/S played their cards right this time round

For the benefit of the two of you i've highlighted the nonsense.

You were right first. There just really isn't much difference. The graphics differences are apparent on some games... under excessive checking. I doubt any of it is noticable in game (excluding Ghostbusters apparently)

From what I can tell Xbox Live isn't really that much better at all and PSN is starting to add more and more things to improve it (such as a version of the party chat thing which is VERY useful on 360)

As you say PS3 is the better console for Media Capabilities as the menu system is nicer, it is quieter and supports a couple more formats (plus bluray) Also as you touched on the PS3 is cheaper to buy extras for which includes the cheap HDD upgrades*

For purely a games console these current £199 Elite packages are hard to beat..

*That said there is currently a deal posted on HDUK for a cheap Xbox 360 250GB HDD

Don't forget that the 'pure' games console you refer to also acts as a media extender for Windows Media Centre, can play movies from USB sticks and Hard Drives and can download and stream HD movies from the marketplace.

Better for media as the menu system is nicer indeed.

I have both and love em to bits. But nothing beats a PC for gaming! :-D

I'm in the same situation of choosing between the PS3 and Xbox 360.

I was genuinely all set to buy the 'seemingly cheaper' Xbox, BUT the draconian action by MS really scared me off, along I'm sure with a lot of other potential buyers. Banning consoles because they have non-standard modifications or even a possibly unwittingly counterfeit game? By all means crack down on piracy, but this is ridiculous. There is no recourse from MS either, other than 'buy a new console'. That's outrageous!

The PS3 in contrast allows the owner to use a variety of 3rd party devices and mods (like cheaper HDDs and memory cards thta are apparently also going to be locked out with mandatory uipdates.)

I guess for those that don't want Xbox live/online play, there are gonna be a s*&tload of cheap modded Xboxes on eBay (they're already appearing). I also wonder if anyone will relatively soon come up with a way of 'unlocking' the locked xBoxes...

I wonder if anyone can confirm whether locked xBoxes are unable to update system software, which is occasionally needed to play new games?

Do tell me, what exactly are the benefits of XBL over PSN then?

Forgive me for trying to just post facts and not the usual fanboy nonsense.
On my 360 I go online, I select a game and I join it. Most of the time it is lag free.
On a PS3 I go online, I select a game and I join it. Most of the time it is lag free.

The menu system on PS3 IS nicer. It flows better, everything is in a sensible order and isn't covered with promo/adverts. It is much closer to a proper Media Centre such as Windows Media Centre or XBMC. You also only chose to quote one of the 5 reasons I gave for it being better at Media..

I never said 'pure' console. Nor did I give a preference on either console because that is up to the buyer.
What I said was if you are purely after a games console and none of the media extras the PS3 gives you then at the current deal price the 360 Elite is hard to beat.

Yes the 360 can act as a Media Extender. I use it most days but its not as seamless as the PS3 and as i've already mentioned it doesn't support as many formats.

PC gaming is a different beast altogether.

And old, tired dieing beast ;-) With the price of a decent graphics card costing more than either console you REALLY have to want to use a mouse and keyboard. Although consoles still haven't worked out RPGs properly..

Riiight..

Firstly, there is nothing to worry about at all if you use your 360 legally. There is no reason to mod your 360 unless you intend to run burnt copies.
Obviously modifying your console to do so breaks the TOS. Anyone who mods their console should know this and MS is quite within their rights to ban you for doing so.
At the end of the day the more and more people who run burnt games on their 360 the more and more developers will turn to the piracy free PS3 instead.
MS are not just protecting themselves they are protecting the 360 and its customer base.

PS3 does have much better support for third party peripherels. However nowhere has it been said MS will locking out third party HDDs. At least not yet. The Datel Memory Units yes.

No that just isn't possible at least not to go back online with. Xbox Live will request the unique serial of the console and it will report as banned.
Banned consoles will be unable to update online although I think I have heard of people downloading the updates to PC previously and then running them from a disk. Don't know if that is still possible.

Worth noting a banned console will be pretty useless for playing Media as it won't be able to request the codecs required for the most popular formats.

Anyway :w00t: this is a nice deal, if it wasn't for the bundled MW2 it could be a good Christmas present for my younger brother. Trying to find a more age appropriate bundle. I've seen an Elite with Forza and SHIFT but I think 2 driving games will be a bit much!
#25
Banned consoles are not useless at all for playing media. You can still download themedia update for the banned xboxes with your PC and burn them or put into a USB stick to update your xbox, plus there is only one, as it only plays xvids, mp3 and ac3 filters come as standard.

IF you have a home cinema with a seperate bluray player, the XBoxs are far better deals, if you want to play HD movies on a games console then get a PS3.

As for PC gaming your behind the times, for £80 you can geta GFX card that will produce far superior graphics to either console, you can build a brand new decent mid range PC for £200 - £250 that can do alot more then either console.
#26
I have both the 360 and the PS3. I love the PS3 for Blu ray, streaming etc. but I find the 360 better for games. If a game comes out for both the 360 version is always superior.

Just so you know I picked this package up from Game last night. I already had MW2 so the manager allowed me to return it. So I got the Elite with Forza for £199 then a £45 refund. I managed to pick up 2 pre owned games that I wanted with the refund.

Ah I thought the download for the media update had been pulled (I had heard of deployed squaddies complaining about it) Good to know :-)

I know some games will work on the cheaper graphics cards (COD series works on my laptop) but Operation Flashpoint:DR for example has had lots of PC owners complaining because their Quad Core, SLI'd, 8GB RAM machines are struggling.
Does look very pretty when it does work though :w00t:

Be careful as you seem to not really know what your talking about there. Its not a case of poping in a pirate game by accident, that wouldn't work and you certainly wouldn't get banned. To play pirated games the xbox has to be opened and the DVD drive firmware re written to bypass the checks. As for banning so many people it was because some idiots started cheating the gamer score system which was seriously hurting the reputation which it has built over sony's ps3 system.

OK, I obviously didn't 'know what I'm talking about', as I'm asking a question that I obviously don't know the answer to! As mentioned, I'm a complete novice to the XBOX.

I have learned since that the current 'modded' systems being locked are based entirely on detection of legally (but against the agreement for XBOX live) flashed software rather than detection of illegal games, which will not work in an unflashed box.

I was slightly confused (and there is some general confusion on this) firstly, that this is a test case for MS and will be expanded upon in other areas (detection of unsupported peripherals). Secondly that MS have already announced the intention to block 'unsupported storage'/'unsupported memory' - they have not specified whether this includes HDDs, just 'storage' or 'memory'... I note that there are a LOT of cheap 3rd party XBOX 360 HDDs on eBay....

From everything I've read in depth from a lot of different sources, the flashing of XBOX firmware had no effect on XBL gameplay and is purely for pirates to play copies... like I say, I'm new to it though....

Riiight - it's NOT illegal to flash your XBOX any more than stuffing a jam sandwich into it if you like!. It's against the TOC of XBL which I understand MS are using to disconnect XBL users as an indirect move to stop piracy - and I don't blame them at all for that, sneaky as it is.
Moot point though, as the only benefit of flashing the FW seems to be playing pirate games, so I see your point! :) I don't intend modifying it btw as online gaming with friends is the main reason for buying..

Concerned as mentioned in another reply in this post about the implications of this move by MS and the vagueness of their stated intentions.

As a long term worker in the IT industry I'm well aware of the ability of people to quickly circumvent security, particularly MS security! I suppose with this being access to a managed network it's unlikely blocked units will be able to be unblocked - stranger things have happened with spoofed MAC addresses of chips or clever manipulation of firmware though...

Thanks for your response..

Totally agree about eBay, seeing it already! - they can even describe them specifically and accurately as 'not blocked from XBOX live' if they haven't actually connected them to XBL in the last few weeks....a knock-on effect for many disappointed familes this Xmas I'm sure!
