Following on from MS anouncing that in the next dash update we will be able to rip games to the HD then for anyone wanting to purchase a 120 GB HD this could be of interest as you are likely to be spending £75 - £100 soon in any event. BB are currently offering this deal however my local store wouldn't budge on the deal having to be completed at the same time thus meaning i lose all my data or spend money on a workaround which negated the bargain either way a stinker of a deal.........

However i went into gamestation just down the road and they verified and then price matched the deal and also kindly transferred my data across instore free of charge which took them about an hour.

So i'm currently a happy chappy with the following benefits 120gb HD, HDMI connection as opposed to Component, New Full Warranty, Nice New unworn Controller less wiring behind my set up oh yeah and a smarter looking Black Console all for just £129.99 or effectively an extra £30 (or £55 if i could get to a TRU store) more than i could have spent in the very near future...

The only place i saw this advertised in BB was on a 10" x 14" black and green elite style desk sticker at the checkout, no big posters in the windows but it was a 100% official BB advert not just a handwritten managers special so assume it's nationwide and therefore should be easily price matched at any Gamestation and possibly Game if your local BB can't do data transfer these stores might as they did for me.

Happy days!

seems ok...but what about accessories, like i got 2 pads would they take them in and only give me 1 black pad?
#2
Well they obviously wouldn't change every accessory you currently own for an unopened black version, also they wouldn't want more than what came with the console when you purchased it.

You would only trade in what was in the original box. Cant understand the cold votes. It will cost you £75 for the 120GB HDD alone so the fact you are getting a better machine with HDMI is fantastic.

Probably! Just take in what normally comes with the Premium Pack, then ask what prices they'll give for your extra's (put them in a separate bag!).

is the elite much quieter then the premium?

Seems to be running at Game Stop in Ireland/Eire too:

Um, where did you see the anouncement for ripping games to the HDD? Sounds like suicide by Microsoft to me. Buy a game rip it & send it back. Legal piracy... bring it on!!

The Falcon chipset one is yeah, make sure it's got a 175W power pack when you get it, that's the best way to tell that it's a Falcon chipset one

You will need to have the original in the drive to play from the HD.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a "TRU store" ?

you're spending £130 for a £75 drive though. With the new 60GB drive on the way and drive price cuts this seems kinda retarded.

Seems a cracking good deal to me - £130 for a 120gb drive, better HDMI connection than on an older component premium, new unknackered controller, new 12month/3yr warranty peace of mind. Yes the drives are quieter than on the older premiums and the ripping referred to still requires the disc to be present in the drive in order to verify that you haven't sold it on but this will mean that the machine never gets noisier than when the machine is sitting on the dashboard for example ie: no whirring apache copter noises. £75 120 gb HD is only available instore at Toys R Us so you need a store near you but in any even you are getting all the above for an extra £55 outlay in that case so that seems like a hot deal to me. Prices will always go down wait forever and that will always be the case but i reckon this is as good a deal as you can get today on a new Elite?

Try buying a new 120gb drive for your existing premium from Gamestation/Game/Blockbusters and you'll struggle to get one for less than £99.99 at present so then it's only an extra £30 outlay......
#16
:oops:I see, there's me thinking somebody was going to get sacked.
#17
would ebay not be the cheaper option though ?. not sure on what the prices have been recently though. ?

only opinion though, been thinking on getting an elite for a while, but what to explore every option before committing.
#18
If you want to copy the save games and other content of your existing 20gb HDD onto the new 120gb then you need to have both of them at the same time and a M$ data transfer cable. If you've taken your 20gb HD back to trade in then you wont be able to transfer stuff off it.

As for the drives themselves M$ are royally ripping us off for what is essentially a 40quid 120gb laptop drive in a plastic caddy.

If you have an old pro which hasn't died with RROD yet and some spare money then this deal is fine as the console will probably die at some point and although M$ have extended the warranty to 3yrs and will fix it for free it's a bit of a pain when it starts to freeze all the time.
#19
does the elite only come with HDMI...as I dont have enough inputs on my TV for another HDMI???

So get Gamestation to match Blockbusters deal and they will do the transfer for you for free instore - I did! i had a 2yr old + Premium/Pro so it was a good deal for me.

Yes it comes with HDMI and Component connections.

excuse me but whats the point in ripping to hd if you still need the disc in the drive .... seems pointless you still got to haul your fat as** and change cd

it makes the console much quieter...because game is running from hard drive not the cd....

does anyone know what happens with the current warrenty? like i have sent back my xbox 360 to microsoft like 3 times...if i change it to the elite and i have a problem wot does this mean, that my warrenty would continue with the previous or would it start again with the new elite?

All 3 consoles come with the same connections (Arcade, Premium, Elite) including HDMI, Component and RCA

HDMI and Comonent offer exactly the same picture quality, so I have no idea why several people refer to the Elite as having the better HDMI connection :?

The arcade unit only comes with the cable for RCA, but you can pick a cheap HDMI cable up for a few quid allowing for a HD Video connection.

The Premium unit comes with RCA and Component leads.

The Elite unit comes with RCA, Component and HDMI leads.

It will stop the drive spinning, so less noise. Saves wear on the drive as it's not being used and also will speed loading up by a second or two (although sometimes it will still be quicker loading from a disc)

Indeed.

will speed loading up by a second or two (although sometimes it will still be quicker loading from a disc)

It will never be quicker loading from DVD. Worst case scenario the game loads as if expecting data from the DVD drive. Most games will be much faster however (try a original xbox game on the HD, then on DVD - massive difference). Even more so if new games are optimised for hd access.

I got rid of my premium and got an Elite when it came out.........the lowest i've ever got the HDD down to is 96GB

If this news of copying games to the hard disk is true

http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/07/14/some-of-the-features-in-the-new-xbox-experience-8-person-chat-vga-plus-more.aspx

then it can only be a good thing.

One thing (apart from RROD) that really annoys me is the noise of the console.

What I've noticed is

1. Playing original xbox games (not 360) it's fine.
2. Watching DVD's it's fine
3. playing 360 games it's very noisy.

So I assumed it's because the system is working harder, processor is hotter and needs cooling. But one day it occurred to me that when playing 360 demo's which were downloaded from xbox live it's back to a fairly quite (not ps3 quite levels) console.

So I hope it's true.

Cold... got my 120gb HDD from pc world for £27!

It would be cheaper to buy a 120Gb Hard Drive, AND SELL your exisiting 20Gb. You should be able to 'upgrade' for £40 then

Whatever next....you'll be saying that the free refills in mcdonalds and subway are cold because you can get a jar of coffee in sainsburys and make 100 cups at home or the office for the same price?

That's the crapest reason ever for voting something cold and you should know it....you got a clear pricing error matched elsewhere to take advantage of the fact that you couldn't get it from the original place that made the error....firstly well done Gary, you were lucky simple as that, lots of people tried but we all knew it wasn't a deal just an error unless you truly believed the rrp of the 120 gb drive was £34.99 as advertised in error by woolies? Secondly that "deal" which was never a deal simply isn't available today so stop basing today's deals on yesteryear's defunct errors On that basis you will vote cold every deal involving a 120gb HD costing over £30? Pointless arguement it will be years if ever that MS reduce the rrp of that drive to £30 (even though that would seem a reasonable price granted). So well done to you but please don't bang on about you're good fortune at taking advantage of an error and base your arguments for voting cold on better reasoning?

I'd say this is a hot deal for anyone with an old premium say 2yrs + that wants a large drive. better connection and yes the hdmi is superior to the component connection, new warranty, falcon chipset and a nice new replaced wireless controller, granted anyone that bought a premium last month would be better off buying a HD on its own but that's pretty obvoius and this deal isn't aimed at them same as i'm not going to go and sit in MCDonalds or Subway necking free refills all day but i'm not just going to vote them deals cold because they won't benefit me because it's cheaper to make my own at the office or take in a flask of premaid coffee.

lucky....i ran around on friday tryin to get it, but everyone said no, its priced at £99.99 so we'll price match it

Exactly the point, so this is a good deal at just £30 more considering everything extra that you get as i mentioned above!
#34
this is still getting cold votes ? . i really must be missing something, is somewhere giving them out free with a newspaper or something ? lol.

makes me feel nervous about taking mine in now. may have to wait and ebay my old premium to just buy an elite straight out then ?

I couldn't be bothered writing the post ou did, but I agree with every point you made - well done for saving me the hassle;) Heat & rep added to you!

Incidentally, I got a Hi-Def SD camcorder for £169 from Argos via a pricing error, so any HD camcorder offers I see in future will be voted cold by me for the same logic.

Actually in some circumstances it will, I have had DLC from the hard drive, take longer to load than a disc based map for example.

The loads times from disc aren't that bad anyway, unless it's a really bad port etc

It will depend on the game at the end of the day, although speeding up loading really isn't the reason to install to a hard drive.

You'd think so wouldn't ya, shame no one can be bothered to post about it on here though...

Yes, i too was sweating bullets at these ease of trading my ancient premium in for the quivalent of £130 whilst brand new premiums with HDMI are selling for only £170 new - just £40 more! Wish i'd wasted time setting up an online auction sale then paid my fees then packaged it all up and then done the post office run route it would have been sooooo convenient particularly when my old machine rrod on the new buyer and he wanted a word in my ear lol.

Still I must admit if this deal was about saving 70 pence locally on 100g of Beef Jerky over the supermarket price it would be deal of the week nowdays i suppose.....
#38
i've tried heating it up a little. General Carnage was spot on about it being a great deal for those with old Premiums. Got mine not long after launch and it's still soldiering on but it's a noisy brute with no HDMI, so have often thought about upgrading. This is definitely something to consider.
#39
What I cant understand is why the deal at Play (still a good deal) is getting loads of heat. I would rather pay £129.99 for an Elite than £169.99 for a premium with 20GB.

Ok so you need to have an xbox to take advantage of the deal but how many who are voting have an Xbox360 already?

I still think this is a great deal.
#40
I still think this is a great deal

It is just that Jackal!

This is definitely a great time to upgrade to an Elite from an older Premium, once those first consoles hit 3yrs and RROD they would virtually be classed as a write off in the motor trade, this guarantees you an extra 3yrs against rrod for £30 more than the price of the 120gb HD on it's own as well as all of the other benefits previously mentioned eg: Falcon Chipset, HDMI Connection, New Controller, Quieter Drive......

Why anyone want's to wait for the 60gb model i've no idea, how many times have you bought a PC hard drive thinking "oh that'll be enough memory" only to wish a couple of years later you'd bought a bigger size initially?

Judging by some of the comments and unthought out Cold votes in this thread "you can lead a horse to water but unless it's a bottomless cup......."
