Not sure if people are going to moan at me for this but searched and only found it for £39.99 or £34.99 at Argos so thought it might be useful for those that dont have Argos near... Sorry if its not!

Anyway i dont think i need to explain what it is... its a HD-DVD drive for a Xbox 360.

weird question but would this be able to play 360 games aswell ? or just HD-DVD films
#2
just films
#3
just wondered how does this add-on to the 360 menu... as in does it show 2 drives or what? (i am thinking of getting on for upscaling)
#4
No, the semi circle below the "play game" cd tray is used to access the hd dvd drive
#5
umm ok but im assuming i can leave COD4 in the 360 and films in the HD-DVD drive and it will be simple to pick them

Yes, up on the d-pad utilises the 360 drive, down utilises the hd dvd

Erm...this add on does NOT upscale, your xbox 360 does that all on it's own. The picture you're getting when you use your 360 for DVDs now is already being upscaled (if using component/HDMI), it doesn't get better. But you can still use it for HD-DVDs, so if you see a few titles you might like to see in HD (eg season 1 of heroes) you can pick them up quite cheaply

ok thanks well im assuming there are still a few thousand in stock around the country so will buy the HD-DVD's first and pick up the player after when it might drop in price again...

Thanks for letting me know ;)

These can be used on a PC too. With the right drives and software.

:w00t: So what software and driver do i need? ... i think im going to have to get one now!
#13
I am considering buying one now for my bedroom as the PS3 is downstairs...

When are they stopping new releases on this format?
#14
2 questions:
Can you get these in black to match the Elite?
Can you hear the movie over the fan noise?

As far as i know they dont have any new releases but i think it was mentioned that some company may take up producing them though i dont know if that was still happening?
#16
They have pretty much stopped making them now. Only the ~400 or so that have been made to choose from. They don't make them in black and it is easy to hear the film over the fans. Plus it doesn't upscale and it will only play hd-dvds or normal dvd's.

I use it on my 360 and with my laptop. Handy with the laptop as it sometimes decides it doesn't want to read the odd disc.

If you want to watch HD-DVD films on the PC you'll need the drivers (Google them) and a copy of Cyberlink PowerDVD. Might be worth checking your machine is up to speed as it uses an immense amount of processing/GPU power.

My laptop's 1.66ghz Core Duo and 256mb X1600 barely cut it.

Are there 2 versions of Power DVD as i have a normal one but on a youtube video someone had one which had HD-DVD in the logo screen when no video is playing?

Also my pc should be fine its 2.2 dual core with 3 gig ram and 8600gfx (or 8900 something around that haven't opened it up in a while)?

No and barely.

Been this price at Argos for months, cold.

It was hot before and is hot now, irrespective of whether it had been at this price before.

This is a great deal for a Toshiba unit inside (which is at least £16 - £20, if you can buy it still) and you get an external case plus a power supply (worth £10 - £15) and a remote control unit (worth £5).

I realise that BluRay is the future blah blah blah, but I'm serously considering getting one of these. Can anyone tell me where's the best place to pick up HD films at a reasonable price?

There's a load at HMV for a fiver.
Also they are region free so you can import them from around the world for cheap as well.
I recommend heroes season 1 on hd at amazon for £25

an 8600GT will be fine, they have a built in hardware decoder.

"..and a remote control unit (worth £5)."

Remote is quite handy. I use it to log onto Live with my passcode (just press 'b' button when it asks to switch the joypad on, to get back to the passcode entry screen) and browse around a bit instead of using the joypad. Previously I thought the unit was multiregion but it just seems my region1 and other region discs that I had tried were coincidentally region free despite what the dvd cases said on the back. Oh and I think it also acts as a universal remote control if you can be bothered to program it/set it up.
