Title says it all really.

XBOX 360 HD-DVD Drives are £10 at GameStop.

The only GameStop shops in England are the Birmingham Bullring and Stockport, but if you're in Ireland then there's loads of stores according to the website.

They're 10 euros in Ireland too, so you save even more over there, getting it for about £7.50 !!

Nice if you want to watch high definition films on your Xbox rather than forking out at least £200 for a Blu-Ray player or PS3.

I'm sure the same was said about betamax :p

..and it went on to be used in the industry for years afterwards as it was far superior in quality to VHS. Seems to be a pattern forming - the better format lost out...

There is a big enough catalogue of HD-DVDs out there to warrant every Xbox360 owner spending a tenner. Some won't even be published on BD, or will cost more extra per disc than this player does anyway!!

HD-DVD won't just disappear as a format.

Now Sony have won the format war by bribing the film studios with hundreds of millions of dollars, maybe they should start bribing the public by subsidising BD hardware, otherwise their BD format will be a dead duck anyway, as it will get overtaken by solid state technoogy.

you can buy this and 1 hd-dvd for less than the price of a blu-ray film!

true about betamax and VHS but HD-DVD's are not of superior quality to Blue Ray.

Nice spot and excellent price whatever the doom mongers may say. Mine is on its way from Amazon.de for the same price and will do as back up to my main Toshiba HD player. All in all I have got the Tosh (1080P upscaler too), 7 HD films and the Xbox HD drive for £80 in the past few months. Whats that equivalent to, about 3.1/2 Blu-ray films? I know which ones I'd rather have, and when I decide that I'm fed up with watching the same old HD films after they become totally unavailable and 1080P upscaling is no longer good enough for me, Blu-ray will be dirt cheap with a dirt cheap back catalogue as the next-gen format should be on the horizon.

You dont have to make excuses and try to rationalise your choice by dismissing superior hardware.

bargain if u have an xbox. Big back catalogue of movies and some as low as 4-5 quid. How can this not be a bargain?? Who gives a sh*t if it's obsolete or not. Its a tenner and will give u the chance to check out watch hd is all about cos at the end of the day there is no difference between the 2 formats.

Never dismissed it if you read it properly. I said it will be dirt cheap when I get round to considering it, and not the over inflated prices you are paying for it now ;-)
#16
tempted to get one for a tenner
#17
Might get one tar :)
#18

Damn none in Belfast :(
#20
it will be free with the sunday paper soon lol
#21
I dont normally comment on these fights about the HD DVD drive, but for what its worth, my intention with htese is to pick one up for about a tenner as soon as one is available that I can get easily, and then sign up to lovefilm for free for 3 months - thats unlimited HD movies for 3 months for the cost of the drive - bargain if you ask me...
#22
Bargain price regardless...with the vast amount of cheaply available HD DVD's its perfect for a personal collection.
#23
Never knew we had GameStop over here.

dont know much on this but doesnt/didnt blu ray use and older/inferior codec or something ?
#29
Hands up everyone who got one for £10?
#30
i may be wrong about this, but i believe these machines only run at 720p resolution. Proper HD is 1080i or 1080p. While im sure it will still give a great picture, its not proper HD.

I have a normal dvd player, which upscales to 720p. The picture is really good, but not HD

As mentioned before though, for £10, its well worth it, if you live in the area.
#31
Well isn't american High Def 720 so technically it is?

MINI-RANT:

The whole HD thing has been way over-hyped, IMO. It makes sense if your moving from NTSC but moving from PAL and the difference, although appreciable, isn't all that startling. People should concentrate on *what* they watch instead of *how* they watch it. Big Brother will still be rubbish whatever platform it's viewed on. Westlife will still make you hurl despite the fact you're listening to them on your shiny new iSheep Micro. Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Having said all that, this is a bargain, especially if you have only a few HD-DVDs (and a 360, obviously). :-D
#34
Thank god someone who hates Westlife too :)
#35
I take it these are same as those sold on amazon for £13 recently?

Also - maybe a stupid question, but are these compatible with normal DVD's? If so - worth getting just for the remote.

720p is proper HD, an upscaling DVD playing is not displaying from a true HD source and as such is never going to be as good as HD DVD/Blu Ray

Seems to be sold out everywhere I've tried so kinda expired?

Dont think so BetaMax is not High Def, you should read some more to find out :whistling:
#39
Can it be used as an external HD-DVD drive for a PC?
#40
Good if you can get it, got mine for £13. See the sony fanboys have returned to try and justify their purchase, the fact that you can buy one of these players and 50 hd dvds for the same price as a blu ray player sort of wins the argument everytime.
