Hi Guys ive got a good one for you videophiles. you can pick the xbox 360 hd-dvd drive for 18.10 from pc world. You ask how when instore it retails for £39.97. Well its simple PC world offers a price matching plus 10% offer when compared to a list of retailers. one of these retailers are game station who are currently selling the drive for £19.99. So i took a print out of this to my local pc world stored showed it to the guy at the counter together with the drive and he price matched plus took 10% off so off i walked away with the drive with a £21 saving and big smile on my face.

I think he means the difference between what PC World were charging and what he got it for. But I see what you're saying as well. :-D

Yeah I know. It's the 'perceived' saving, like in the other thread about Argos/Woolies etc

Blu-Ray fanboys will vote this cold because it's "dead technology". However, with lots of 3-4 quid HD-DVDs knocking around I think this is a good deal. Made even better when you consider the Media Remote that comes bundled with the drive retails for around £15.

Maybe you should have posted the Official Media Remote for £18.99 and mentioned it came with a free HD-DVD Drive:)

lol Eduardo.. well yeah its far better than using the xbox pad. plus alot of people says quality and feature wise HD-DVD's better than blu ray as HD-DVD was primarily designed for movies where as blu ray is geared more towards storage. as far as im concerned im more than happy with my purchase :). I just wish now i had a 40+ inch screen to watch my movies on rather than 24" i currently have. P.S the people who say that the drive is noisy i hardly hear anything from the drive except for when the drive initally trys to load the disc so sound wise its okay :)

Great piece of kit, and excellent price!

HD DVD will live forever in my heart as the format that should have been - i just wish there was a player that could play MKV's :p

Blu-rays are just too expensive atm imo.

With HD-DVD dead in the water it may seem like a silly purchase. But at the current prices it's actually worth a dabble.

The only downside with this deal is that you have to go into PC bloody World and be harrassed by little oiks fresh from Halfords where they've been buying bodykit for their Ford Escorts to match their stupid little mobile phones. Within seconds of walking through the door they'll ask you why you're there and continue to do so, one at a time, until you leave. This seems to be policy.

Don't dare decide to buy anything! If you do they'll instantly upsell every little thing they can, assuming they don't suggest you're wrong to buy what you've chosen.

By this stage you need to get through their single open till where you'll be probed for all sorts of details including home address, telephone number and date of birth. After this you have to pass a rigorous security screening before leaving store.

So yeah. Price matching they may do, and 10% they may do ... but at such a price.

I assume this plays normal DVD's too!?

Cool, I think I'll get one. Only problem is that the xbox is spannered at the moment - no video out!

If I could pick up one of these add ons for £20 online I would. As there is a huge back catalogue of movies you can get for £5 or less.

Same films are £13 - £20 on BR. So its easily worth it.

My nearest pc world is around 10 miles away and I rarely drive near it. I can be bothered with the trip to be honest...

Yes - but it's connected to the 360, which also plays DVD's LOL

Well, it is dead technology. No point beating around the bush on that one - if you're wanting a player for future HD movies then this is absolutely not a worthwhile purchase.

What it is good for is picking up a big, cheap library of the existing HDDVD releases (some of which still aren't available on Blu-Ray). Plenty of places are shifting their HDDVD stock for £4-£5, even on titles with list prices five times that, so as long as you don't mind another box under your TV (and it's not even a big box, assuming you've got a 360 there already) it's a bargain way of either getting into the HD movie scene or expanding your collection at the sort of prices Blu-Ray probably won't see for another couple of years.

Now's the ideal time to pick up an HDDVD player IMO. The hardware's the same price as a single movie on Blu-Ray, and the movies are a fraction of the price.

One warning, though - you might be better off bypassing PC World and going to Gamestation anyway. They have a better deal on the drives which is that if you pay an extra fiver you get two HDDVDs from their £7.98 range. I don't believe PC World matches bundle deals like that, and it probably works out better value. Some Gamestations (including Reading as of a couple of weeks ago) still have stock of the drives and a decent selection of movies. I picked one up with a couple of bad movies I hadn't seen yet (Troy and TMNT) for £25 and have been abusing HMV's cheap HDDVD selection ever since. ;)

(Edit: Of course, the moment I plugged it in, my 360 died - my very first red ring of death - so I'm stuck with my Blu-Rays for HD movie goodness for now...)

I was going to say no.

But then I saw this. So, maybe, but you might need to buy some extra software to get it to work.
#19
u can do it.... but its easier in vista TBH i have one but rarly use it!
#20
Did not know that lol. What a fool! Ah well! might still get one of these anyway as i have a 40" tv and dont want wear and tear of dvd on my xbox laser!
#21
Might be worth buying one and keeping it as backup for when my current one breaks down! :)

PCW 10% is not 10% off their price, it is 10% of the difference between their price and the price they have to match. Here the two are roughly the same as PCW price is almost twice Gamestation's.
Even so he still was diddled, here it should be 10% of £39.97 minus £19.99 , i.e. £19.98 which I would have argued 10% is £2.

Plus you could have got 5% Quidco for instore pick-up, possibly another £2 if the order went through at £39.97 and was validated at that.

So a possible cost of £15.99.

Well actually i did the math for the sales guy as he didnt know what planet he was one but i got it wrong slightly cos i was in a rush at that time on but woah i payed 9p more than i should but then again i got the price to come down from 39.97 to £18.10 which i feel a big enought saving for me. the 9p they take it as a tip

Managers at PC World sometimes have slightly interesting views on how the price match works, which strangely always work out with the customer paying more than they should do. It's generally best to do the maths yourself (carefully) before heading over there and being ready to demonstrate your workings. :D

On one occasion I even had to call their customer service department after buying the item and get them to refund the amount by which the manager had insisted on overcharging me.

I bought one of these via Amazon.de a while back, and as I ordered 2 and split cost with mate it was almost this cheap.

A couple of people I work with have been looking for the drives though so I past it on.

Heat added.. although even at £5 a pop HMV have taken a fortune of me.

Try AnyDVD HD to bypass HDCP
#28
actually a good deal.. don't think there are many blu-ray people arguing against this deal so no need for this thread to get so defensive.

good deal. i would say it is worth buying this even if you already have a hd dvd player - in case your hd dvd player breaks in a few years time and you won't be able to play your hd dvd collection.

Thanks for the lead.

Store Managers face dropped to his boots when I showed him the Gamestation pricematch.

As someone else said, cheaper than the remote control on its own.

Now off to find some cheap HD discs.

Hah. You should try buying a laptop hard drive from them - a drive that cost £55 or so from their price match sites was on sale at PC World for around £125 when I was looking for one. You could almost smell the tears. :-D

thanks for the post £19.99 at gamestation is a great price not as good at the extra vision Ireland deal for 7.99 euros but still a great price for us English people, I just called pc world customer services to try and track down a store with a HD-DVD drive in stock, the guy on the other end of the phone was clueless as usual and tried to convince me to buy a blueray player instead even though i told him i already have one, according to him no where in the country has any left, not even for online sales, I didn't believe him and started calling my local stores but not through the rip off 0870 number (see http://www.saynoto0870.com/numbersearch.php) but unfortunately no store in my area would answer the phone. so I'm off to gamestation instead at least their the staff have a clue and for £25 i can get the drive plus 2 hd dvds.

Tried to order one online but it wont go through the gameplay site. WIll try their local store tommorow, failing that will give the website a call. Not worth driving the 20 mile round trip to pc world to save £2......

Looks like HMv have droped some of the prices again on hdvds just picked up these...

Kingdom £3.99 HD DVD- 3.99
Documentary Planet Earth: 5hdd - £14.99

Battlestar Galactica (2003): Complete Season 1: 6hdd: £12.99
Oceans 13 £4.49
Land Of The Dead£ £3.99
Mad Max 2: Road Warrior £4.49
Bourne Identity £3.99
Bourne Supremacy £3.99
Bourne Ultimatum £4.99
Syriana £4.49
Chronicles Of Riddick: Directors Cut£ 3.99
Miami Vice £3.99
American Gangster £3.99
Knocked Up £3.99
Apollo 13 £3.99
Hotel Babylon: Series 1: 3hdd £3.99
Jarhead £3.99
Mummy: Uncut £3.99
Mummy Returns: Uncut £3.99
Blood Diamond £4.49
Metal Jacket: Special Edition £4.49
Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Secrets £4.49
Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire £4.49
Harry Potter & The Philosophers Stone £4.49
Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban £4.49

Not seen a fair few of them others good for the mrs or kids. These are working out cheaper than dvds, 27 including 3 box sets for £135 delivered with possible quidco.

Even if you watch them once them pass on or sell for a few quid on ebay forums cant go wrong really. Collection and player for £150 half the price of a BR player on its own might be a dead format but if you have a hd capable screen or projector its a huge amount of content for pennies...

i cant find bourne identity for £4, has the price gone up?

also both at game and gamestation are out of stock, do pc world still price match?
#38
They have sold out of Bourne Identity. I think the item has to be in stock for them to price match. Try your local gamestation or Game, I priced up a couple of 360 hd dvd drives and 4 films for £50 from my local gamestation branch....
