Went into Gamestatin in Clydebank and asked if they had any HD DVD drives left, they said they had a few and they were £17.99 or £18.99 and i could pick any 4 HD DVD movies from the £4.98 range. Excellent deal i would say... Instore only i think.

the op did say instore only

I got this at £35 with DVDs. It was a good price then, this is now a brilliant price. Hot!
#7
This has to be a good price even if you just use it for an upscaler. Heat added.
#8
I'm a bluray convert but I gotta say the drive and 4 films for that price is a good deal ;) hot
#9
I was in that store last week...aggghhhh. Back in NI now :x lol

Does the 360 HD drive upscale?

I've had one yonks and never knew - I use my PS3 to upscale for me.

Is it any good as an upscaler? - if it does lol
#11
even if you are a blu-ray fan, if you have a xbox then this is a good investment.

yes i know it has lost the format war, but you can pick up loads of HD-dvds for tiny prices and get lots of good movies in HD.

Eg Plent Earth is about a 1/3 of the price of the blu-ray version, films like lost in translation, american gangster are available for cheap too.
#12
dont think so - from the drive directly - the xbox may do that for u though - think I remember them mentioning it in a firmware update - Still PS3 does a very good job at that and more ;)

Does the 360 HD drive upscale?

The HD-DVD doesn't upscale, the 360 does. But only if your using a VGA or HDMI connection.

the drive itself doesnt do any upscaling, its supposedly done by the 360 itself via vga or hdmi itself although this has never been officially said it does at all i dont think

whats the more?

I will tell you what it doesn't do... the PS3 doesn't play good games. (Unless you think 5/10 is a good critic's score)

I hear it can be used as a waffle iron.

The fanboys have arrived then. Oh well

Its a good deal - heat & rep added

IIRC The 360 upscales DVDs to 568p which does make a discernible difference.

Umm no it doesnt

dvd's are 576p from the factory in the uk

the 360 upscales from 576p to to whatever resolution your vga cable or hdmi is

Correct.

Having owned both PS3 and XBOX360 I would say the PS3 is by far the better media hub and with the PS3 upscaling to 1080p the difference is very noticable.

Q. Does the Xbox 360 upscale standard DVD movies?

A. Absolutely, but only if you’re using the VGA or HDMI connection. During the so-called “Spring Dashboard Update” Microsoft enabled DVD upscaling over the VGA connection — and upscaling over HDMI has been there since the introduction of the HDMI AV cable — so if you’re using VGA or HDMI you’ll see movies in whatever resolution you’ve set in the dashboard. However, this is only over VGA or HDMI. Also, with Fall Dashboard Update, standard DVD movies will be upscaled to 1080p on displays that support it, again only over the VGA connection or the HDMI connection.

They're not even very good fanboys. Shame they couldn't take advantage of hot deals to get all three consoles so that they wouldn't feel the need to develop this sort of twisted emotional relationship with large multinational corporations that will never love them back.
#27
Ahh most of my testing was done with the 360 over component.
#28
well, its actually 576p, not 568p, but thats not really upscaling, it's just a prog scan output of standard PAL resolution.

but, the 360 does upscale over VGA using the HD DVD drive addon, i'd presume it does over hdmi too, but i don't have an hdmi-equipped version so couldnt say for sure.

be a bit odd if it didn't though.

tbh, having just watched sony's conference at E3, i'm beginning to wonder if i'll ever bother getting a PS3 now.

FFXIII was going to be the kicker for me, as i'm a huge fan of the series, but with that now 360-bound, that need has dissipated.

frankly, the whole thing was a bit lacklustre, showcasing nothing really compelling games-wise.

chances are now i'll probably just get a bluray standalone player when the prices drop, and maybe pick a PS3 up in a couple years time when the price has dropped enough for me to not really have to justify the purchase as much.

the 360 would upscale anyway without the hd add on, all that does is play hd dvds (and obv normal dvds) nothing else

It has been said officially many times, not least by Major Nelson among others when it was introduced in an update.

He's wrong. The 360 upscales to 1080p as well, there is no difference.

If this deal is in my local store i might well pick it up. Already got the HD-DVD drive, but 4 films for that price is pretty good + i can pop the drive inside my PC with a little modifying!
#33
not that i dont believe OP, but can anyone confirm this ?

or was this a special deal for clydebank branch ...

dont wanna waste a trip down
#34
I got a second unit on SUnday from my local store and this offer certainly wasnt on. Maybe they have a load of stock left. I weill call my local branch tommorow but I think I got the last drive anyway....

whats the more?

Being able to play BD5/BD9 (AVCHD) discs (and AVCHD from a USB drive) I would imagine.
#36
I went into my local GameStation on Monday (14-Jul-08) for one of these. It was 1999p for a new drive on it's own or 2499p with two (formerly 799p, now 498p) films of my choice. All I need to get now is that attachment called an Xbox360. Well either that or do a couple of tweaks to my PC.
#37
I just got it for playing movies on vista and it works fine with power dvd 7.3

Is it just a SATA HD-DVD drive in an external case? As at that price I wouldnt mind putting one in my pc.

Wanted to know if I could put it in my desktop, and it seems you can. Just need a couple of adaptors. ATAPI to IDE and an IDE to SATA (about £5 from DX)

Just got to see if I can find one now.
