I know HD DVD is "obsolete blah blah heard it all before..." but great deal nonetheless! Not sure if this is a national deal but went into Gamestation, Woking and picked up this HD DVD player and 5 DVD titles (Any 5 HD DVD's priced at £3.99).

The sales guy said that there was one more left at the Woking store. I have the receipt and can post it up here later if anyone is interested! Good luck bargainhunting!

Anyway thought this was a great deal as i have been looking for ages and the previous best was £12.97 at Game for just the player or £35 for the deal as described above also at Gamestation.

P.s. Ask at the counter! If they have any, they will most probably be hidden in their stock room.

P.s P.s. CHECK BRANCH FOR AVAILABILITY - not totally sure if this is a national deal.

WOW if they have them im definately getting one

Somebody posted a heads up about this forthcoming deal only a few weeks ago, its really hot if its come true.

Only problem is now, those just buying into HD DVD have really missed the boat unless they can absorb second hand titles on Ebay (even that might push up prices) the fire sales have all but gone and there is only a limited amount of titles left. This time last year was the start of the sell offs and the time really to have bought into HD DVD.

i would get one if i had a 360

ps3 and blu-ray for me

I somehow doubt you would ever drop lucky to buy a HD DVD player standalone for £20, cheapest I got one for this time last year was £55 clearance at Comet....they go for far more than that on Ebay if you look at the EP-30, EP-35 & HD-A1/E1

1) These also make great external drives for installing stuff on netbooks.

2) Went into gamestation today and asked about the 5 for £10 deal. Apparently I spoke to a manager, as he knew what I was talking about, said that the offer was happening SOON, no idea on when yet, but that they were for sale in some stores due to a miscommunication from head office.

It is happening, it is genuine - just not yet.

You say about net books, does it require external power or usb powered and what is the conection used for netbooks like my 904hd??

Thanks in advance if you shed any light.

I can answer re using the Xbox360-HD-DVD ROM drive with (eg) an Asus eee 901 via USB.

The drive has its own 100-240V PSU (provided) - very similar to eee 901's white one.
Connects via USB (provided) to the Asus or any other USB.
Doesn't require any specific software installed on the Asus eee 901 with XP (anyway) for drive to be recognised.
Can even boot the Asus 901 off the drive (from memory).
Works of course as a CD-ROM and DVD-ROM and HD-DVD-ROM drive although I haven't been daft enough to try to find/add any codecs to try to play HD on my eee - somewhat suspect it w/be underpowered and the DOWNscaling of the picture would be rather a waste of HD.

That's what I bought mine (from old Amazon Germany deal found on here 6-9m ago) for.

I'm really hoping for my local gamestation to have one tomorrow, might buy 2 packages and sell one!
#14
Got mine from gamestation w-s-m sure they had about 3 more this morning when i popped in.

for anyone thinking about gettin one but not sure how many titles are about just search amazon there are loads, i'm upto 13 in 2 days and will keep goin for as long as i keep seeing different films catch my eye. old tech or not still HD quality at a very small price, and for what it cost i'll use that instead of the drive in my elite console for games too, preserve the main drive for a bit :)

You can use it for games? ACE! Because the laser in my drive is a bit knackered.
I have the same view on things as you do, HD at a very cheap price, yes please

Have they reduced the £35 price to £19.99 then or is this store specific?

May have a look tomorrow... although my xbox 360 is turning into a black hole for my money with all these cheap games on HUKD

This happened to my mate also.

Suspect some of the remaining stock is faulty, and as such should be tested straight after purchase (lot of folk intending to keep as a spare)

Never heard of anyone successfully doing this.

You will not be able to watch HD on a laptop unless it is top spec, takes a lot of juice to decode the HD.
#27
People reporting faulty drives, are they new and factory sealed or pre-owned? new & sealed shouldn't be broken right out of box. I bought 2 of these HDDVD addons from DVD.co.uk for £28 each a few months ago, one I've used & working fine, the other is still factory sealed, I was thinking about keeping it as a spare, but if people are getting new & sealed drive broken right out of the box, I may need to test my spare drive.

and is it + 5 ordinary DVDs or HDDVDs in this deal?

and yeah no much use trying to use it to play HD on Netbooks or low spec laptops/pcs, take a lot of computing power to decode HD.

Did I say that?

To use these to play hd-dvd's on your pc you will need powerdvd 8 or above with hd/blueray support or they will not work so for those who don't have a 360 and are thinking of using it for films on the PC if you don't have this software don't bother its not cheap and if you don't have a decent spec machine it wont work anyway.

They do make a decent external drive for your pc and are cheaper than buying a dvd rom and caddy i have 2 and a fair collection of hd-dvd's and am happy with them but im going to vote this cold as this is hotUKdeals and these will be like rocking horse **** there might be a couple of shops in the whole country that have a couple kicking about in the back but it wont be everyone these have been finished over 12 months now and when i got my 2 back then for £25 with 2 free films they only had a couple then and as this site is meant to be for bargains that everyone can get this doesn't fit the bill there's no online and its a chance in hell that your local store has any let alone know anything about the price.

this is an amazing offer if true. 5 hd-dvds for £20 and a hd-dvd drive is a top deal and id go for it if i could, but my store have no drives in.

im just waiting for the 5 for 10 on the hd-dvds to start in the branch. will get at least 10 for £20 and that should finish my hd-dvd collection then as there are only a few left i need and GS are the only ones selling them cheap. will put me on 90ish hd-dvds too lol.

but if they only have this deal on, then its like a free hd-dvd drive and i might just go for that if they get more stock as i want a spare for the future. i dont want my drive now to stop working in a few years and it cost me a bomb for a replacment which by then will be 2nd hand.
#33
I can't see why'd they'd of lowered the price to 19.99 seems insane.
#34
They are selling them all day every day for just over £20 on ebay ( brand new sealed box from a uk seller with 100% feedback )

bought mine for use with my little acer aspire one netbook, neat little thing !!!

but this is with 5 dvds ;)

i might just have to look into this later today, i like the idea of having an external drive for my netbook (although it will look a bit odd with an xbox 360 hd-dvd player sticking out of it :P) heat added

I recon if it runs off 12v you could mod it to be powered by a firewire connection.

Yeah but why - its quite large, so hardly portable anyway. Just plug the thing in!

Awesome deal. Have over 60 hd-dvd titles as they are so cheap yet still only have 1 blurray as they are still too expensive.

Do gamestation open at 9am or 9:30?

A silly question I'd imagine but wanted to make sure the DVD player works fine with the Arcade version as I am going to phone my nearest Gamestation to see if they have any at that price.
