game station it is the same price and has been for a long time now.

it is a good bit of kit, i had one, just FAR to noisey as it uses the gpu on the xbox360, meaning the fans are on full pelt.

hopefully with the elite and new boards, this will be more usable.

Missed that one :whistling: - you can buy a pre-used one for £79.99 from Gamestation too - not sure what warranty you get on it though......

The noise issue doesn't bother me - I have it in the tv cabinet - I open the door when I'm playing games to let out the heat, hopefully playing hd-dvds it won't generate too much heat, the same as when watching normal dvds on the 360.

unfortunately not, it generates the same heat as playing a game, also gererates the same noise as the hd drive is the bare bones, the processing takes place in the 360. a normal dvd is quite, an hd dvd s like a plane taking off.

mind you mine was on shelving rather than in a cabinet but it made watching films after 10pm a nitemare as you would need to turn the volume up high to drown out the fans but then at night, having your digital reciever and 6 speakers pumping out does not make you popular with the neighbours.

it is still by far the cheapest way to get an hd dvd player ( although the tosh is now a teasingly good price) but i would probably get a stand alone if i were going to get another .

Cheapest I could find the Toshiba with a very quick search is about £250 - think I will take a chance with the 360 hd-dvd drive until the hd/blu-ray format war sorts itself out! But cheers for the heads up! Luckily, the way my semi-detached house is built with the stairs in the middle means I can listen to movies really loud late on and the neighbours never hear!

i can confirm the elite is far more quieter than a standard 360.

Does the XBox 360 HD-DVD Player have region coding? I'm not up on region coding and HD-DVD, but I just thought I'd ask anyway!

This HD DVD player lets you plays standard DVDs and will upscale them. This feature will be region locked to whatever your 360 console is like all DVDs are!

HOWEVER HD DVDs and the HD DVD players have no region protection built in, so you can order in films from the US on the cheap and before we get them here too!

One of the main reasons why I want to see HD DVD become the next standard

The 360 can upscale DVD's anyway, it does not need the HD-DVD drive to do this. AFAIK you need to be using the VGA lead, and the upscaling just works.

This is because the 360 has an ANA scaling chip built in which lets it upscale standard definition content (DVD's, videos, original Xbox games etc) to HD and vice versa (playing 360 games in standard definition). The 'Fall Update' last year also enabled 1080p output on the ANA chip, required by the HD-DVD drive. It also means it can scale any lower resolution content up to 1080p if you're lucky enough to have a TV that can handle it.
