First post, so get stuck in !!!

Expensive for an HDMI cable, but this adaptor has the optical interface for connecting to an external amp/sound system, the official cables do not fit with the HDMI lead connected. The official leads can be cut up or modified to fit with a HDMI lead, but I think this is cheap for the official version which is usually £25-£35.

I play MW & MW2 with headphones for this reason.

Good price for this but shame on M$ for removing these from all new Elite packages and more shame for not by now having a dedicated optical out onboard or for not moving the hdmi port or av port or for not making a new av cable thinner and with a switch to use as optical out only when hdmi is in use.

Not if you buy a surround system that supports HDMI you won't. The dongle is only required to get the optical connection. I bought one of these (well a copy of one) from Dealextreme for about £5 and it works perfectly.
#17
I bought one of these from deal extreme also, and it's terrible.

Good price for an official
#18
Really? What is wrong with it? As far as I can see it either works or doesn't - not like it has any features as such? I presume yours falls into the 'doesn't' category?

As claym0re said.

Optical audio, whilst not bad, is nevertheless inferior to HDMI & the lossless quality audio it offers
(you are getting the sound with no compression as if it was a transparent copy of the master audio track from the original mixing desk).

Of course you need a lossless source (many Blu-ray & HD DVD discs offer this - can't say as I know for sure whether this makes any odds to a game, but whatever is there you would be getting as completely as intended), a high quality HD receiver and a surround-sound speaker package of high enough quality to even be able to hear any of this.

Unfortunately that all costs, lots.

Top notch price.... Voted hot, have some rep too...

I tell you what narks me about this audio adapter, how much extra would it have cost for Microsoft to have put in as standard an optical output on the main board of the Xbox 360. Also, the cheapening as late of the Elite package, no Audio dongle as standard now. They may have lowered the retail price of the Elite by £30, but they take out this.

Putting things like this and built in wireless would have cost Microsoft next to nothing but there is no profit in that is there!!! :x

I prefer the 360 as far as playing games on (Controllers/xbox live) but the PS3 is a far better designed and works out cheaper in the long term.

Did for a while, now doesn't

I now use component with optical
#24
Can someone advise if you are able to use a longer cable or is this adapter is attached to the HDMI cable? Cheers

I totally agree, the money I have invested into the Xbox 360 already it would be foolish to change (along with the fact that the 360 arguably offers the better gaming experience) however I do feel that in comparison to the Playstation 3 Microsoft are fleecing us for the privilidge...not wireless, no optical/coaxial output, no rechargeable battery packs as standard.

This dongle actually plugs into the slot underneath the HDMI input, into the standard A/V port that you would usually plug the composite or component cable into.
#27
As the 360 only outputs Dolby Digital soundtracks, optical should be exactly the same as a HDMI audio connection. If you have a amp that takes HDMI you may as well use that and save on buying this adapter.

Have to say that between this adapter, the Wireless cost and the Play and Charge kit cost, the PS3 is actually cheaper than the 360 now for many people. That is without even taking the Blu-Ray and cheap hard drives into consideration. Really think MS need to start thinking about the customers and including the WiFi and optical outs as standard. Cost to them approx £3, WiFi RRP £60, HDMI Cable With Optical Socket RRP £35, what a joke

I prefer my 360 pad, the differences on the dual platform games are negligible and the PS3 has had better exclusives for well over a year IMHO. Basically there is very little difference in the gaming experience, if I was buying new and needed wireless and an optical connection I wouldn't touch a 360.

For those who have a 360 and haven't connected it digitally to their AV Amp yet though, this is £13 very well spent. The HDMI cable would cost about £5 delivered for a start

Forgetting the apparent poor quality (which I and Im sure most people will never pick up on) this is a great deal. Had an old 360 premium which I recently traded in for an elite as it had already gone to MS for repair once and was making some Modern Warfare helicopter type sounds. Did keep the flat plenty warm though!

Anyway, was dissapointed not be be able to hook the elite up to optical and hdmi without buying a dongle or cutting up the original cable which I wasnt prepared to do. In the end, purchased via ebay for about £15 with the hdmi cable which I was quote happy with when most places its £30+.

Great deal, just a shame MS decided not to supply this in the current 360 Elite v PS3 Slim pricing wars. For reference I have a ps3 hooked up via hdmi and optical, just needed the cables, no need to mess about. Before I get shamless flaming I endorse both consoles, not a fan boy of one or the other!

Why do you need this cable ?

My 360 is hooked up via HDMI & also has an optical lead from the Xbox into my sub ??

For the same reason you do.

Or you must have forced your old cable in or took it apart or you already have this cable from your elite pack of old.

Maybe a third party hd av lead is thinner.

Why don't you need this:lol
#32
Hacked my old cable up a few months ago in protest to M$'s £25 official lead. But I now suffer the console restarting if I switch from the AV channel. Good price.

ordered.

I just used the cable that came with the Xbox Elite (bought about 6 months ago). Connected to HDMI as normal, then connected the Optical lead as normal. No hacking or cutting required ?

You just answered your own question !

This dongle only came with the XBox Elite - if you don't have an Elite, you need to buy it seperately. What's more, it no longer comes with the XBox Elite - so anyone buying one today, will also need to buy the dongle seperately.

Without the dongle, there's no way to physically fit Optical Breakout + HDMI cables into the back of the XBox 360 - someone with not enough braincells, put the ports too close together to use them at the same time...

I tried that, and I found the sound quality was not as good. Fingers crossed that this gizmo provides the same audio quality as plugging the optical cable directly into the bundled component lead.

;-)

...if not, then its going straight on eBay!!

Possibly due to the quality of the cable you were using? I'm using a 6m one of these:

Never had a problem and sounds great. Although have never compared it with any others - optical etc.
