I'm an Xbox newb and don't quite understand this MS points thing. Would I need to buy an Xbox Live membership and points, or do points = membership?

You get a free silver membership to xbox live with every xbox, if you want to play online v people you need a gold membership, you can get them for about £26 online or about £40 from a shop for 12 months.

MS points are used to buy things such as games, songs for guitar games, extra maps for games, etc etc etc. You add your points to your account and then spend with them.

Think of MS points as going on a holiday and you need a different currency to buy stuff out there! You could take your sterling to a bank and swap for currency and then use that!

Thanks, that's a simple and comprehensible way of putting it. I think I'll do some research between Gold and Silver memberships to see what kind is most suited to my needs, but it sounds like I'll need points whatever type of membership I choose.

EDIT: I now understand that the key difference, as you said, is that Gold membership lets you play online. As I don't know anyone else with an Xbox and have almost zero gaming skill, I think I'll stick with the Silver membership untill I get decent at gaming, but I'll keep an eye out for cheap points: in the meantime however, I've ordered points @ The Hut using code in OP.

Tesco entertainment is cheaper with FTSL15-1, £16.71 becomes £14.20 and quidco tracks at around £1.13. Plus it's a much better deal if you are ordering more as thehut have no codes past the £40 spend whilst tesco continue to give you the 15%.

If you've used the famous tesco code you can set up a new e-mail and re-use it.

With a new Xbox you only get 1 months Gold trial on a new gamer tag created on the console. You can do this 3 times per console.
If you have just bought a brand new 360 Unless somethings changed you qualify for a free 1-month free gold trial immediately so even though you are on silver you should still be able to play online etc.
Yes, when I got my first XBOX 360 Console I filled in my details and created a Gamertag and then I got stuck on the Menu screen where it asked what type of XBOX Live member I wanted to be because I knew there was a 1 Month Free Gold Trial available but I couldn't find where to activate it.

Therefore I phoned the XBOX 360 Free Phone Number and asked a Customer Services Rep to explain how I can activate the Free Gold Trial. They said "To activate the Free Trial you must firstly select Silver Membership (Free), and confirm this again when XBOX try and prompt you to Upgrade to Gold. After you have confirmed that you want Silver Membership, your XBOX 360 Console should automatically search to see if you are eligible for the Free 30 Day XBOX 360 Live Gold Membership Trial Period. It should then offer you this Trail Period".

P.S. After the Trial ends, just purchase a 12 or 13 Month code Online for £25-£26 to renew as you'll soon discover that around £2 per Month for Gold Membership is well worth the money.

1122 degrees at present. Tesco sell it for £16.71, 15% off is £14.20, quidco is 8%. Quidco at the hut is 3.5%. I'm pretty sure that is enough confirmation, but here; http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm134/DBN-COD4/Untitled-1.jpg

and sample quidco tracking rates for tesco and the hut;

Hello,

Sorry to ask an annoying question but does anyone know off the top of their head the answer to this: I just want to buy extra songs for LIPS- do I need Gold membership to do this?

Thank you!!!!

Damn, I'd already used the 15% Tesco code and thought I couldn't use it again; but now I know to just use a different email address. It's too late to cancel my order @ The Hut as it's been dispatched, but next time...

I look forward to trying out the 1 month Gold free trial to see what it's all about, but I sure as hell don't wanna be somebody's breakfast on a multi-player shooter!

I wouldn't worry much about it, it's not that big a difference anyway if it's already been dispatched... The gold trial confused me as well as I am an xbox noob. I set up a gamer tag online, then found that it didn't give me a 1 month trial when my xbox arrived, as it has to be created on the console so I've set up a temp account to get my 1st month for free.

I don't think so, as far as I am aware all the content is on the market place and that can be accessed with a silver membership.

Some deals are for gold only members, like deals of the months and and early demos
