Dead format, Bluray player prices dropping all the time.

Won't find it much cheaper though, I guess.

Dead format but the prices of the HD DVDs are peanuts if you can find them. I got some for 1p each from the Comet deals recently. Other HD DVDs I bought have cost me £2 each. I was also given my HD DVD drive so happy days.

Don't forget that these can be used as a stand alone USB DVD drive for all those people with no internal DVD drive.

Wonder if they bundle the media remote with this like the brand new retail package.....
#5
Great find, ordered. Still got loads of HD-DVD movies, and as beerman said, handy for a DVD drive which I need for my wife's ultraportable.

Heat added!

HD-DVD doesn't even look as nice as Blu-Ray. And where the hell do you even buy HD-DVDs these days?
#7
will this work as a disc reader for a notebook?
#8
No longer online. The ones in Game Station (if you can find them) came with the remote and were sealed as new so you might be better off looking there first, but for £20 it's obviously a bargain if only for the fact you can attach it to a netbook. It is pretty weighty, so don't expect to be able to cart it around with you wherever you go though.

Unlikely,

I bought one from my local CEX recently and the first one was faulty with no power lead! The second one I had to ask the shop guy to find the leads (usb and power) and also the installation CD/DVD. So getting one in boxed condition may be hard.

I use my HD DVD drive a lot but the only problem is the noise levels that the 360 kicks out, Can be a pain in the **** sometimes. Mind you, you can get these to work on your PC as well

even if you dont like hd-dvds and cant find any, this is still one of the cheapest upscalers around!

Yep, I put XP on my ASUS using it.

Don't know where you got that from? HD DVDs look great, admittedly the 360 drive doesn't provide the quality of a dedicated HD DVD or Blu-Ray player but my HD EP30 can provide better pictures than my PS3.

These drives can also be hooked up to a PC to play HD DVD content, which can mean backing up your disks.

Disagree strongly on the first part.

Firstly for many of the disks using the same codecs the transfers were identical across the formats.

However many of the HD-DVD were considerably better than the blu-ray as the Blu-ray format was using the old inferior MPEG codec and HD-DVD was using VC1 for the same movies giving considerably better picture on HD-DVD.

Hardware wise HD-DVD was better than Blu-ray (and I am not talking about the size of the disk, I am talking about how the data is read off the disks).

Google about it if you want to read more.

I wish HD-DVD won the war, but it didn't.

I also used mine to install Win 7 and games on my laptop as the internal drive is kaput, works very well
The bios just picked it up as a standard external drive.

If you have a netbook or a laptop with no cd/dvd drive then this will work I have done so on my Mother's Acer netbook and it works fine just don't expect hd dvd playback you need to install some other custom software for that.

To my eye the HD-DVD's I own played on this look slightly better than the Blu-Ray's I own played back on a PS3. If anybody can shed light on why I would be glad to know. Shame that it is a dead format but well worth hanging on to.

I got mine HD drive ages ago during the gamestation 48p offer.
Went and bought £7 worth of HD DVD's then went to my CEx and bought the HD DVD player they had and it came boxed as new with all leads and remote (still sealed) and I was in perfect condition.

Saw one in Game earlier behind the counter by the glass cabinets and it was priced up at £7.99

£19 too expensive... it's junk
#27
And HD DVDs were all multi-region.

I still own this HD-DVD drive and now own a Blu-Ray player. Can see no difference in picture but the Blu-Ray is a tad slower - and it's a Sony!!!

HD DVD should have won!
#28
Before I bought mine people always cracked wise about the noise level saying it was ridiculous but I cannot hear mine at all, only my actual xbox while it is running! Good quality at a cheap price - I have a decent collection of 25 or so of my favourite HD-DVDs all bought for around £1 - £2. Use ebay to take advantage of the free postage they impose and you can pick up some real bargains! :)

Just so you guys know a new Cex store opened in Bridlington on Thursday!

fully_automatic, if someone has a 360 and wants a cheap way to watch some HD movies then this is a bargain. If you can tell me where you can get a blu-ray player for anywhere near 20 quid, I'd love to hear about it.

Why on Earth people feel the need to compare the merits of HD-DVD and blu-ray when someone has just posted a bargain is utterly beyond me. Just thank the person for the tip, like this...

Thanks

Ahahahaha back to school you misinformed little child. They are both 1080P.

You go back to school.
If I upscale my DVD's to 1080P will it look the same.
If the films were recorded with a £300 HD camera and a £100,000 will it look the same.
Bitrate and other factors go into it not just the lines

Upscaling won't look the same as native. £300 > £100k cameras are not the same. But try as you might, it's still ridiculous.

eBay, Play.com, Amazon, Comet, Gamestation? They look the same, it's digital data you muppet.
