Has anyone bought this before? I can only find the few reviews on ebuyer, really want a good surround sound set up for ps3/tv/ipod but dont know if this will cope. looks like a bargain for the tallboy speakers tho?

Sorry for being dense, but for us non-techies out here...why is optical so important for surround sound?

No optical = No good for PS3

Or xbox and sky

Probably the biggest reason why optical is so important, is that SkyHD only outputs the surround over optical. If you rely on the HDMI connection then you'll only get stereo.
The older xbox models also output their surround sound via optical - mine certainly does, although I believe the newer models do it all with HDMI.

Its not surprising it doesnt have optical its NOT a DTS/DD decoder only basically a set of speakers and an amp for them. You wont find a surround sound system with optical and true DTS/DD decoding for anywhere near this price range! Still as said before good price for the speakers alone! Get a cheap Decoding amp and use the speakers with that if you want a decent system for your optical devices!

I have had average 5.1 surround before. I think there's quite a difference between just 5 speakers and a woofer with that of a decent 5.1 system.

Well worth the investment if you actually want good sound.

Ah, I went for a more expensive system with optical! Hope its worth it!

I'm confused, if this has no digital inputs at all, then how does it get a 5.1 signal from the source? Is this just taking a stereo signal and splitting it around the speakers?

Im not sure, but maybe playing movies from the USB could give it 5.1 sound?

through 6 phono inputs maybe, thats how my old speakers did this

yes it has 6 inputs! a lot of dvd players do the decoding and output each channel via a seperate cable so you will have one cable in for each channel. also I imagine it has a virtual dobly type system that splits the sound over each speaker. so you will get sound out of them all but not true seperate channels for each speaker!

seems like a good price to me

The Onkyo package posted recently was far better both - in terms of quality and bang per buck value.

Cold for me BUT may be perfect for others so otherwise HOT
