A 256-bit memory interface and fast GDDR3 memory enable blazing graphics performance with the quality set to max so you don't have to choose between frame rates and image quality. Need a break from gaming? The GeForce 7900 GPU also delivers smooth, high-definition video playback and crisp picture quality thanks to its advanced NVIDIA PureVideo technology. If you are searching for an extreme HD gaming and video experience on the PC, look no further than a Geforce 7900 GPU.

Yet again a deal gets positive ratings (up the teens of degrees earlier) then gets dragged down again by people voting cold with no reason given. If you think the deal's cold then please leave a reason why, so that I (and others) know for the next time.

Personally I thought that a card running at 600MHz, memory clock at 1.6GHz, DDR3 RAM and especially with a 256bit interface was a pretty good spec, if I'm wrong then please explain why?

You can overclock it to get even better performance out of it so I thought that would make it a good buy for someone wanting a relatively cheap upgrade from older cards and wanting to play current games on decent settings.

Is it outperformed by cheaper cards? By that I mean is it outperformed in real terms, not just "it's not DX10 so it's rubbish" as that point has been argued by many others who are wiser in the ways of GFX cards than I am. A lot of them have said that the current DX10 cards will not perform well when true DX10 games are run on them and you're better off waiting for the next generation cards to see their true power. This card might give that stop-gap until teh newer DX10 cards become cheaper.

If you don't have the sense to leave a reason for voting cold then it isn't helping anyone, guys!

You thought this was a good card? Well your right it is!

Once again some peopel have dragged it down for no apparent - well most likely because they think "oh im not interested" and mark it cold. :s

Voted it hot (lukewarm ;D )

okay deal - x1950 PROs are better cards though and their have been some around for this price. These are quicker than 8600GTs though just dont have DX10 support but who cares cos the 8600GT isnt quick enough to get the best of DX10 anyway. voted warm . . .

But I think 70 quid for a card that could play latest releases 'Medal of honour' and 'world in confilict' with high settings aint a bad deal.

Good deal but beware XFX are a complete joke at returning faulty cards. Look for alternatives

If you really want to spend money on a DX9 card then go for the GF7950 card. Voted warm.

....nah thanks - i own a 7950GT (Specifically the Gainward Golden Sample, which is highly overclocked from the factory and specially binned for performance) and that comes in at 580 MHz core - the reference 7950's are 550 MHz and the 7900GT/GS are reference at 450 MHz - 600 MHz core is frankly insane, although i know that most 7900GS wil hit 670+ when volt-modded.

Good card, a 7950GT etc are better but imo not worth it - the 7900GTO is probably a better card, even on the price factor, they're like gold dust to find.

EDIT - If it were me, i'd take that, a VF900 (an £18 cooler) and volt-mod it - If you overclocked then you'd be keeping up with a 7900GTX

how much of a gain is this over a 7800GT 256mb?
#9
It's not a gain over the GT

XT < GS < GT < GTS < GTO < GTX < Ultra

Well, going from the info on XFX website for their 7800GT it has a core clock of 400MHz standard, but they overclock to 450MHz, still 256bit memory bus, but the RAM clocks at 1GHz (sometimes overclocked to a little over that, but nowhere near 1.6GHz. What sort of RAM is on your old card, is it DDR2 or DDR3? This uses the faster DDR3 RAM.

mr.velvet, this is a 7900GS factory overclocked so when you compare the clocks on both the GPU and RAM then it is faster, difference of 200MHz on the core and 600MHz on the RAM.

It IS a gain over a 7800GT.

Thing to remember is that the 7900GS and 7800GT's have only 20 pixel pipes, compared to the rest of the 7 series range.

Because of this, even with the huge clock increase, it will perform similarly to a 7900GT or 7800GTX.

These are good cards, I have a 7800GTX in my pc right now, and if I was gaming at 1280*1024 only, it would be great.

Personally, i'd get this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133540 which has a milder overclock - and increase the clock myself if necessary.

Still a reasonable deal.

At this point in time though it's worth waiting for a week or 2 to find out what nVidia are going to do with the upcoming 8800GT though.
