Got one of these from Gearbeast. It arrived in less then 5 days and was very well packaged. Don't select insured delivery but pay via paypal. Not likely to get stung by import tax then. I've ordered 3 computers from Gearbeast and always had great experience. This laptop really is unbelievable value for money. I've got the baseline SSD in it and also added a 512GB SSD in it as writes quite slow on the included SSD. I've got dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 10 on it. Good speakers are great screen and just generally a great build laptop. You can run two displays off it if you get a USB C hub and use the HDMI too. Only slight thing is battery could be bit bigger and screen could be bit brighter. These are the same with me for any glossy screen though vs Matte and battery is only because I'm used to Macbooks which have much longer battery then most windows latops bar the new ultra books or the new XPS 15. Still get 4 ish hours on mid brightness just doing general web and work.

£623 now. Any codes?

Also you can run football manager at max settings and GTA 5 at high everything at a steady 45 frames. More then enough for casual gaming, not too noisy too and good for those who want a portable premium work machine that can also play the odd game on. Only viable alternative for me was the XPS 15 but I don't like big laptops and anything else is double the price (yes they have better GPUs in cheaper laptops but they aren't this form factor or build quality)

you need to select the Hong Kong warehouse not the China one

This vs an XPS 13... hmm...

XPS 13 gains you:
Bigger battery (54, 57 or 60Wh depending on model vs 40Wh)
Thinner bezels
Tiny bit lighter (1.228kg vs 1.28kg)
Thunderbolt 3 (for docks, displays, storage, GPUs, whatever)
External battery gauge
SD card reader

But in return loses:
HDMI port (my single biggest gripe)
dedicated GPU

And of course it costs more, seems to be about £800 on ebay for a model to match this but I've definitely seen it go lower (I bought mine for £700 for instance). Then again the Xiaomi could be due for VAT bringing it up to £660.

It's certainly close, I went Dell for battery life and thunderbolt 3 reasons, but if cost, HDMI or the GPU's more important to you go for the Xiaomi.

I need 16GB so waiting for availability. mini DP would be nice to drive two monitors using dGPU. Will stick with my Thinkpad tank for a bit longer.

Funny as just seen they have released an ultimate edition that is saying has i7 (still dual core) and can take up to 16GB of RAM. It is £716 but I am tempted as like you I need RAM sometimes for VM. Can't find verification yet though so I'll hold off until that is confirmed.

Got one of these..

Thanks for your comments - always good to hear from someone who actually has one rather than hearing opinions untainted by facts or experience.

Is it touch screen? It doesn't mention this in the description, which suggests not.

Until Xiaomi actually support their products officially in the UK they will be a manufacturer of throwaway products with a couple of years' lifespan to many.

At £549, this certainly isn't a throwaway price.

It's such a shame, as with a bigger battery this would be a fantastic laptop. Ditto their phones which are largely just as good as the big brand flagships.

Worth noting though that if they did become official here and you had 20% VAT to add on, the case mightn't be as compelling.

I'm tempted, but I'm reluctant to order from HK and risk it turning up broken. Warranty I'm not bothered by because most components are easily replaced, but if it's dented and damaged that's not easily resolved!

Description says that it has chinese version of wind 10. How do you deal with that?

If you install a fresh windows, then you lose warranty.

Heat added as its a good value for money.

The loss of warranty is a bit absurd however.

No it isn't touch screen. It is a nice IPS screen though. I personally hate touch screen computers as 90% of the time the screen is super glossy (this is still fairly glossy) and hard to do real work in sunlight or fluorescent lighting. Also spend the whole time wiping it!

Really not sure where people are getting this loss of warranty information (happy for them to point this out for me!) You can install Linux or Windows 10 on this with ease. Never heard a situation of a change of OS in terms of computers (Phones yes) voiding a warranty! It is a very well build machine anyway so not too worried. It also comes very well boxed and mine was shrink wrapped on top. You'd literally have to crush it with a very heavy item to reach the laptop.
#23
Regarding windows 10. I get it free via dreamspark anyway but it is super easy to install other OS like Linux too
#24
This looks pretty good to me - just a quick query if anyone can help - am I ok to just buy a normal UK version of Windows 10 (ie, one of those cheap jobs off ebay) - and install it fresh - would that be ok to do? Also, is the keyboard layout different to a UK one?

It is a US keyboard but that is not a major issue. Even if those licences work they aren't legal. Depending on who you work for you can often buy windows and office for like £10 if it is a public organisation or even some companies that is 100% legit.I'd look at that route if I were you.

I am masters level student in Uni and also works for NHS. So does anybody know how to get the Windows 10 Pro cheap?
Sorry, but I am clueless with these things.

Ordered one, thanks OP. They are going quick. I saw them at 79 and in 4 hours time, 57 are left.

Well it depends what your studying at university but of it is IT then you can get your department to register you for dreamspark. Looks like NHS stopped their deal. I also got windows 10 for £10 when I was a staff member at the university. Maybe speak to your IT staff. Try this link too:-
Good choice on the laptop...You won't regret it!

Great spot. I sent a question asking about the RAM. The CPU upgrade is minimal but if can get 16GB RAM in it then I'll sell my older version. If you were buying new it's a no brainier with that code.

Unfortunately, upgrading a ram is not an option.
I can live with 8gb, i7 and dedicated gpu so pulled the trigger.

In next 2-3 years, we'll have second version of this with 16gb or better notebooks so will update it then.
