Can anyone tell me, if the player is playing a stereo source through this speaker does it convert it to mono, or does the speaker only play either the left or right audio channel? Genuine question so don't descend like a pack of wolves :)

That's a fair question. It is a kind of pseudo stereo, but essentially they would have to be classed as mono even though they aren't quite that bad. I bought a £2.99 3.5mm jack headphone channel splitter from Maplin and run two from that. Not quite so compact, but very effective and definitely stereo!

Why did you buy a splitter? I thought you can connect them directly in series?

A splitter gives you two audio connectors , one left channel and one right channel. Then you connect XMI to each end and you can stereo. Without a splitter the first XMI plays L+R channels combined so there is no stereo effect. Then when you daisy chain another one it too gets L+R channels combined.

A single one of these speakers will combine the left and right channels into one mono output. If you connect more than one in series you will have a lot of speakers all playing the same thing, which is good for volume but won't give you stereo. If you get the right type of splitter (as WBRacing did), you can separate left and right to two jacks and have stereo. You could then connect more speakers in series to make it louder.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

These are excellent. Been using mine for over a year and I recommend it. High quality sound from such a small device.

From the Play version of this deal:

Just search a very popular auction site for "3.5mm Stereo Jack Plug to 2x 3.5mm Mono Sockets".

Also, the leads on these speakers aren't very long. Ideally for stereo you want the speakers further apart, so you will need some kind of extension. Hot tip, you only need one extension lead as you can have one speaker close to the music source with the other speaker on the end of a 3m extension cable, to place at your leisure. Just search the same popular auction site for "3.5mm extension".

Fair point. Thanks for the explanation!

Very cheap price for a truly brilliant portable speaker. I use mine a lot and love it. For just over a tenner it's a great deal.

Excellent little speakers. Paid a bit more for mine and that was a bargain. Don't expect a huge amount of bass though....
#17
Brilliant speakers, especially at this price.

Good price, ordered one. Triple nectar points as well.

I've used mine daily for 18m, and I've now got a cracked wire at the weak spot - just where the cable goes in to the unit. I need to waggle it for a few secs to get sound, which is v.annoying !

Before I buy another (as I'd still recommend them) has anyone tried to take one apart ? I'm thinking of trimming 1cm off the cable & reconnecting.

Now I just need to book a holiday to Magaluf and set this up by the pool, blasting out happy hardcore.

EDIT: It arrived today. It's the "2nd generation". It has some kick to it which you don't normally get with laptop speakers or other small travel speakers. Listening to some Dubstep and it actually sounds half-decent, wub wub wub. Not getting the full extension on the sub-bass though.

Tried mine out today and I'm really impressed. Can't believe the loudness and bass that comes from such a small speaker.
