OOS now.
The Hi13 has a much weaker CPU. Is there a model of the XPS with 8GB of RAM for slightly more money?
Is someone is after a budget alternative (£285), this doesn't look too bad:

Hi,
After some advice if you could spare a minute. I am going travelling and want something portable and easy to use in small spaces e.g. On planes but can also be used for basic laptop functions. I am currently considering either a 2in1 like above or getting a tablet and adding a keyboard.
My main uses will be; watching movies, using the internet and storing photos/videos. I am happy to get an external hard drive to use for most storage but want something that I could connect camera and hard drive to so I can do a photo dump every now and then. Other then that it doesn't need to be overly fast or fancy as I don't use large graphic software etc.

Been searching a while now so any ideas would be appreciated. Budget is £500 max soca bit limiting. Alternatively would look at small sized laptops up to 13"
Anyone had to return an item to this company before? I'm tempted to get one of the refurb XPS 12's but in case I'm not happy with the condition or its performance I want to be able to return it, they've come back to me saying "Goods must be returned in original as sent condition."

It's still under £400 and still a bargain at that price. A premium Core M machine is well worth it - very nearly a Windows version of the 'retina Macbook'.

great specs, shame it's an Asus...

Why?

I fix laptops for a living and the old x55dc asus was a shockingly flimsy laptop, you could actually twist and bend it and the touchpads aren't great... although that was the old models, maybe they're better built now
Is the battery life only 4 hours? Was about to hit the button but that might be a deal breaker for me. What's the battery life on the Dell mentioned?

hi there, have you got links for those 2 laptops you mentioned? cheers :) ...also...
..
on that intel comparison site, why is the quad alot cheaper than the dual, when the hq procesor is alot faster than the U model, and better specs overall/more up to date etc.. ..weird no?

Yes I know but then my point is 'why not a quad-core i7'. It's just a weird mix of parts, it's good value for what it is but I reckon it'll draw less well informed buyers in based on the marketing names and numbers and in reality without an SSD it would be largely infuriating. And back to my other note - the Dell machines are better balanced, in fact Dell is normally very good at having all components complement each other and nothing outwardly mismatched. The short Asus warranty doesn't instil confidence - it may work fine for years but then why not give longer?
1. It's a dual core, don't get hung up on the fact that the branding is i7 as if it had been a quad core the price would be noticeably higher.
2. The reseller only offering a 3 month warranty of their own will keep the price down a bit. I doubt it makes much difference to the price but a bigger one to peace of mind maybe!

Do people frequently need lots of processing power in the CPU but no real graphics, is that a common requirement? Asking seriously as normally I would expect a high-end CPU to be paired with at least a moderate GPU.
Discrete GPU is for gaming, visual content creation and in some cases video transcoding/encoding although CPUs tend to do a better job at that due to more flexibility.
Quad core CPU is for video transcoding/encoding, music creation, heavy multi-tasking, visual content creation, running VMs etc.
So there are more tasks that can utilise a quad core CPU but don't require a discrete GPU than benefit from a dGPU alone but many gamers seem blind to this.
Yes, that was the usage case I expected but this laptop has a dual-core i7 not the quad (which I honestly think ought to be named an i5) and then if you're doing that kind of stuff you've suggested, I'd imagine a bit of GPU transcode which is why the cynic in me can't help seeing this laptop as choosing marketing names and numbers over real-world use (like massive hard disk storage but no SSD, no GPU but i7 CPU, more RAM than normal, etc.)
You can do transcoding with the encoder in an iGPU as well.
I didn't take issue with Intel's mobile branding but now that you can get quad core mobile i5s alongside dual core with HT i7s as well as quad core with HT i7s it is starting to get a bit confusing. :)
This does seem like a weird mix of parts that marketing cooked up but it's still fairly good value for what you get albeit being a refurb with a limited warranty which takes the shine off the deal.

I have had this laptop for a year and it's good. The only problem I had was that it would restart randomly which drove me absolutely insane, eventually after much research I discovered there was a setting somewhere that would trigger an automatic restart if the device ever encountered a crash (or what it interpreted as a crash even if there wasn't one). Once I turned this off, all was right with the device.
Not him but...

This isn't the best 960m deal ever but it's decent. The dell 7559 has gone for £700 (rarely) in the past and the lenovo y700 was £700 just two weeks ago (but only for a short time, about 5 hours, before selling out/ price going up). You have to be smart and use quidco, online codes, asking for lower prices and constantly looking.

If you're like me and 960m isn't necessary right now/want to wait for 10xx gpus, I just bought a second hand i5 950m for £430+ accessories+8 month warranty which will easily keep me going until the 1050 laptops cost around £700. I'm lucky in the fact very few modern titles interest me and I can sell this to my parents who need a laptop in the near future anyway. Good luck with your search.

Very likely no on both.

Plenty of Zoostorm 960m laptop deals on eBay

I looked into them and they have bad customer service and charge to get it fixed along with sending it to then fees. It's an option but I personally do not trust the product or the company much.

If you do, you can get great deals on eBay for them at grade A for £600.

Why would you need GPS inside a laptop? I won't mind it in my tablet, definitely an essential in a mobile, but a laptop??

Completely correct damn autocorrect! Although my thinking was not for hardcore gaming but may be a few light games and to assist with other things.

Good price for the specs.
It is the seller I am concerned.
Have heard bad things about them.
I would not touch them.
I purchased a lenovo flex 2-15 from they're ebay shop last year. The hard drive was faulty so I just sent the hard drive back for a partial refund. After a few days I had to remind them, but they sent a full refund instead! I took it no questions asked. Of course that was luck, but they were helpful none the less!
That is very good for you.
Did your Flex 2 15 had i5 and FHD IPS screen? How was the screen?
And did they dispatch from UK or China? How long did it take for your laptop to arrive?
Yes i5-4210u, FHD. Only took 1 or 2 days, also a refurb, not a mark on it.
Well the screen is OK, although not premium, as you'd expect for this price, it's not great in all lighting, would be better if it was matt.

It's not new...it's refurbished. Very misleading description
"The product is new in the box, but has been repacked into Lenovo non-original packaging. "
Mine arrives today so will let you all know.
I have this laptop just over 14 months now. Specs wise its good, FHD, 1TB HDD and 8GB RAM. Basically its future proof.

The big let down is the screen, it really is crap. When switching from dark to white it takes a few second for the backlight to catch up and thus illuminates on a delay. There is some ghosting, though I suppose not to the extent which people would notice. Boots up fast as well, only draw back is wifi is not dualband or AC, you will need to find yourself a dongle for that. I have noticed after a period of time the USB ports do tend to become a bit intermittent when recognising an attached device, in some instances it does it straight away, in others can take 3-6 mins. The gfx card isn't anything to write home about, its basic thats all.

Its a good laptop despite its flaws, I just don't think its worth £379.99 refurbished, there are other laptops out there with similar specs for the same price.

Not heard of this XS company before, are they any good?

I had a good experience and would not hesitate to use them again.

I'll take a lenovo over hp any day but I'd rather buy proper Thinkpads used for the much higher build quality than the low end gear.

If you're after a cheap laptop then this is a good buy

HP Probook and Elitebook are good too.

So do not dismiss HP completely.

HP Probook since Christmas has been below or around £300.
rowlanddvd
I had a Lenovo thinkpad for about 4 years for work before switching to a Surfacepro 3 (yuck) and the build quality was fantastic - we therefore didn't hesitate to get a refurbed thinkpad with i5 processor for our son who use the office suite for uni and also does some light gaming. That was over a year ago and it's still going strong for a little under £150 from one of the many eBay sellers. I would probably look for another deal like that rather than this one but if this is the model you are after, it looks like a pretty good deal to me.

I think Thinkpad is good too.

But Lenovo Z50 is not a good model. Lenovo B, G, Z series are all budget, not good.

There are good quality business laptop for around £300, with i5, or i3 with SSD. Although not FHD, but Z50 FHD is quite bad, do not think it's FHD screen is worth much extra. Go for those business laptop on overall quality, not Lenovo budget models.

What's a comparable UK model? I've been looking at the Lenovo E550, but after 2 weeks of waiting from az-europe I've asked Barclaycard for a refund so I'm back to square one ;/
Great spec in all fairness. You can't really find a true quad core laptop i7 for less than £700 with a dedicated gfx and fullHD screen.
This isn't a UK model, it's a US import. The same laptop with a 750GB drive sells over there for $699 (no tax if you live in a state where MicroCenter don't have a warehouse).

That equates to about £450 (new) as opposed to £500 refurbished.

Office 2013 is pre-installed... here is a screenshot of the stuff preinstalled: http://screencast.com/t/5oHMfEjx
16gig - it also comes with an 8gigi sd card - 2.5gb of this used with recovery stuff. Also noticed that the onboard 32gb has some space taken - 400mb recovery partition and 260meg EFI partition.

How mouch free space did you have out of the box?
Steam installs and games I have tried work well. Origin is now up and running (needed to use the tab key to get it to let me enter account details). Now about to try a few games. So far, loving this tablet.
When you get it, put it straight on charge - the windows update takes ages. So far I have installed some work related stuff, a decent ssh client, firefox, thunderbird, a c64 emulator and a few other bits. Origin installs but i can't enter my account details so no idea what it is like for games - this is apparently a windows 8 issue, not a tablet issue. Will try steam too and see how that goes. I'm new to windows 8 and missing the start button - hopefully I will find it soon :-)

Nice price, both out of stock now though it seems.
not sure on the situation with the preinstalled office. as they're refurbed it may have been registered prior to wipe/reset. As i say, don't know but maybe worth checking.

Edit - well, it states preinstalled office, so wouldn't worry. You should be able to hold them to it if any probs.

The Atom has gone down to £249.99 + shipping. I took the plunge and mine is like new, delivered in 2 days. The 3 year warranty shows up on the Dell app too. Nice little device, I use it with a motorola bluetooth keyboard and mouse and it woks fine.

I picked up a smart cover case for £10.95 on amazon too.

I paid 218 for a venue 11 atom. Dell 3yr warranty was around 50-60 so cheaper than this direct from dell :/ and no postage to pay...

Yes Dell had free postage before, but its £22 now, hence why I posted this deal

the free shipping expires on 9th June

My mistake, they don't add the free shipping until you go to checkout, in the basket it said plus £22.
That i5, 256, 8gig job is bloody cheap. You'd pay double for the SPro3
