I'm not an AV expert but do I know Yamaha is good gear and this could be an easy solution into decent home cinema. Is it possible to buy separates that make a better system for this price? That I don't know, maybe the experts out there will advise.

Pairing the YHT1810 AV Receiver & 5.1 Speaker Package with the BDS477 Blu-Ray Player, both from Yamaha, for a well-matched, straight out of the box, home cinema experience. 1 x Yamaha YHT1810 AV Receiver and 5.1 Speaker Package The Yamaha YHT1810 AV receiver and 5.1 speaker package brings you excellent home cinema audio. Ready for the latest video and audio formats, it's a powerful and easy to set up system. The HTR2067 receiver can pass through 3D and 4K signals, decode Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks. It also has FM and AM reception. The NSB20 speaker system features a powerful subwoofer and discreet, great sounding speakers. Teamed together, the components work together to deliver great sound for your home cinema system. 1 x Yamaha BDS477 Networked Blu-Ray/DVD Player The Yamaha BDS477 is a Blu-ray DVD player featuring networking capabilities, providing access to networked media, internet video and other online services. The BDS477 can connect to your home network through a wired ethernet connection or wirelessly, so you can download BD-Live content such as games, deleted scenes or trailers for compatible discs and also watch streaming video - such as iPlayer, YouTube etc. An iPhone/Android control app is available, for easy control. Miracast compatibility lets you enjoy a variety of media from smartphones and tablets. With Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD support, the BDS477 delivers superior quality audio, while the 1080p/24Hz HDMI video output and the x.v.Colour and Deep Colour compatibility ensures outstanding video quality to match. The Yamaha BDS477 is a feature rich Blu-ray player, delivering high quality audio and video, ideal for an entry level home cinema system. - See more at: http://www.superfi.co.uk/p-15367-yamaha-bdpk1810-av-receiver-blu-ray-player-and-51-speaker-package.aspx#sthash.ne9Ez6Kf.dpuf

I know people will tell to buy separate speakers and receiver so it can be upgraded easier but this does tend to cost more to start.....

I managed to get the receiver / speaker package at Richer Sounds for 199 on a special deal about 15 months ago and I am happy with it for a starter system.

Is the Yamaha Blu ray player worth 100? As the same receiver / speaker package is currently £249 at Richer Sounds and the same bluray player is £100 but they are sold separately therefore this is not that special a deal......

good package - not the most feature rich receiver in the world, but good value for money all round.

This is technically separate speakers, its Superfi who have put this together.

Is he like Voldemort? Perhaps we shouldn't mention him in case he appears.

I'm sure I got this 4 years ago for £249.99 without the BluRay player, if it's the same model because it looks the same. To be brutally honest, I thought it was a really poor setup. It didn't sound great compared to a previous Onkyo setup and as has been mentioned before was very low on features, but for the money I couldn't expect much else from it. I sold it a few months later.

Did you buy an all-in-one package? (speakers and amp in same bundle). If you did it won't be the same as this one. Speakers and amplifiers do often look very similar across different ranges.

More like Beetlejuice - say "Onkyo" 5 times and he will appear. :p

Some speaker/amp packages have cut down versions of the amp where it will only work with the sub that comes with the package, so can't upgrade it (had a Onkyo. one that did that) But this one looks like a standard AMP, so users shouldn't have any issues upgrading later on.
