Would this pump out surround sound with a ps3 and a Sky box?
Haven't a clue about what home cinema system is best, or even if there is a solution for getting surround sound from everything without swapping leads ra ra ra

Everything you could ever need!

If you have Sky+ or Sky HD then you can use the digital inputs I think. I have a feeling normal Sky boxes have standard (red and white) audio outputs.

Good bit of kit. I was looking at going the cheap way and going for the Logitech Z-5500 from ebuyer as an all in one option, but this is a very good bit of kit. Just gotta double the price to take into account the speakers.

shame this isnt HDMI 1.3 Spec, good price though.

Doesn't really matter as this accepts LPCM audio over HDMI, so any modern Bluray player can perform the decoding and send it to the amp for play back.

Excellent price for some great features

Can someone tell me how I would connet the PS3?

Cheers in advance.;
#7
you would connect a ps3 using a digital optical cable i believe
#8
Thanks, which trak would that get me? True HD? Is this 7.1?

No, you would connect with HDMI. Then set your PS3 sound output mode to Linear PCM and this would give you Dolby True HD / DTS Master Audio or Uncompressed PCM. These are HD audio formats i.e. the highest bitrate (best) you can get watching Bluray.

Using optical would only give you basic Dolby Digital or standard DTS

Great deal.

Cheers for that Heavertron! I know nothing about audio. Just out of interest which one out of them is better: Dolby True HD / DTS Master Audio or Uncompressed PCM.
#12
May be a dumb question, but if you use the video component inputs, where do you plug the audio into?

Yeh this is full 7.1, and also you can reassign the amp channels for bi-amping the front speakers on a 5.1 setup which will make the sound abit better if your speakers support it! I ordered this last night using standard del and they rang me today saying it was dispatched and would be with me tomorrow! good service i say!

I have my PS3 and my Toshiba HD Player connected via HDMI. I was going to connect via optical but this way around is preferable.

Excellent Amp, easy to set up. On screen settings aren't available via HDMi but component only (if I recall).

Superb price.
#15
Not bad, not enough connections for me though.

Using V1.3 HDMI all but guarantees perfect sound to image syncing. Lip sync as it's better know has plagued a lot of systems, so I would definately be insist on this feature going forward.
#17
Voted hot - just a point for all the people who are asking whether this will work with their PS3's or Sky though - this doesn't come with speakers as far as I can see - you'll have to shell out a considerable amount on speakers to get the best out of the amp.
#18
Yes I would buy this and then save up for a set of speaker.

In reference to the HDMI 1.3 . Does this have it? If not will affect the lip sync?
#19
not very clued up on the av scene i have a sagem dlp tv conected via a virgin cable digital box but the sound from the tv is poor to say the least if i purchasde one of these and some good av speakers would i just connect the amp to the virgin box or the tv
thanks Allan
ps my tv as 2no hdmi slots

Great price. I paid £350 for Sony 7.1 amp about 4 years ago with practically all the same features (apart from HDMI of course).

Just to give you an idea of just exactly what you can do with one of these - I run a DVD recorder, PS3, 360 Elite and Cable box all with digital audio. One through a coaxial port and the other 3 through the three optical in ports.

If this is similar to mine, and it should be, you can not only have multiple inputs in and only one out to your TV (not including HDMI), but you can input a bog standard video source for example and it will upgrade the picture to up to component standard.

Awesome bits of kit these amps. Really fiddly if you have loads of things hooked up when you're changing from one source to another but well worth it!

Just wish i had £200 to get this as it's probably better quality and 2 optical doors on mine are f*cked :-D

Not wishing to be a naysayer, are you sure this amp will output trueHD audio? I've been eyeing up this amp for a while but didn't think it would do TrueHD? Richer Sounds specs suggest no True HD sound but if it can then I'll definitely be buying.

Edit: Previous thread on this amp says it can be done as the PS3 will do the decoding. That makes sense - I think! So, I've answered my own question, I think but confirmation from anyone else would be welcome:thumbsup:

I was about to post the same. No HD decoding on this amp.

A nice cheap amp, but a little under specced for me.

Nice, but another £90 gets you the Sony STR-DA1200 from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000K9FJ9I

Ordered as my old Sony AV Amp is in its final death throws (AV Amps with phono input are getting rarer).

Used QuidCo & 10% voucher (£20).

Or cheaper still for the same amp at Superfi.

Ordered the Yamaha. Having owned a fantastic sounding Yamaha amp years ago (still going strong in my parents house and it must be 20 years old now) I couldn't resist at the price! Rep to OP

its a lot of kit for the money. got one from richer sounds earlier in the year, very pleased with it.

Doesn't seem to. I tried it earlier and it said the voucher was invalid. The 2% one does work though, and you can get another 2% (ex VAT) from quidco.

As already mentioned, if used with a PS3, the PS3 will decode all HD audio formats:

- Dolby TrueHD
- DTS Master Audio
- PCM (uncompressed)

So this amp does not actually decode, but the already decoded signal is passed over HDMI from the PS3, the amp simply "plays" the already decoded signal.

Therefore you can listen to HD (lossless) audio with this amp.

As for which is best, they all sound great to me, and depending how good your speakers are, you should hear a difference over standard Dolby Digital or DTS
#30
Wish the technology would hurry up and come down in price. 2 HDMI passthrough ports and a ton of obsolete ports (composite and svhs.) I'm holding off for a decent priced amp with 3+ HDMI 1.3 ports. I'm sure this deal is hot for some though.
#31
can anyone recommend a decent set of speakers to go with this?

I second that question. Was thinking about these Q Acoustic set (paying the £30 extra for floorstanders) which has previously been recommended here.

Ideally I want to get a decent (entry level) set of floorstanders to start with and probably buld the surround system from there. Any hi-fi buffs out there with a view of these Mordaunt Short 906i as the starting point?

Oh, I should add that good music performance is as important as cinema sound for me.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/181821/what-hifi-5-speakers-ideal-for-onky/

I just bought these - apparently a great price for this quality speakers at the moment! I went for the floorstander upgrades for £30 too. Cant comment on quality as my amp hasnt arrived yet to try them!

Shame these can't decode HDMI audio (ie you have to run a separate audio cable). In fact it's more than a shame it's amazing. I'm waiting for a sub £250 amp that can do that then I can de-cable a lot of stuff behind my TV.

I'll hold off although that Amazon Sony does look nice in black :D

I have been using MS906 (not current model but previous) with a Yammy (RX-V2700)and its been very satisfying for both Music & Cinema.

This is not correct. This Yamaha can receive 8 channel HD audio over HDMI. So there is no need to run a separe audio cable at all

Infact the Sony you mention does not accept audio over HDMI so does need a seperate optical cable which means you are limited to standard Dolby Digital and DTS at a max bitrate of 1.5mbps.

I have a Sony TV, so like the brand, but this Yamaha has better features in my opinion
