York 20KG Cast Iron Dumbbell Set £22.99 @ Argos

Be gentle as this is my first post.

Argos are doing a 20KG Dumbbell set by York for 22.99 - I've been looking for a set over the last month and this is the cheapest 20KG cast iron set I've seen, and a quality name too.

Also has 81 reviews at 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

Available both Instore and Online.

Enjoy!

Note: Item is NOT as pictured on Argos site. Changed locking nuts to hard plastic and added a rubberised grip to each handle.

i would use these on my guns
#2
great find!! thanks - 2 sets ordered
#3
i bought these last time they were this cheap , still lying on my garage floor, good quality and good value if you use them
#4
metal or plastic locking wheel?
#5
metal
#6
Metal spindle lock on a set I got a few years back, metal weights almost always tend to come with metal spindles, and plastic/sand based weights more likely to have the plastic based locks
#7
York have actually recently been giving plastic spinlocks with their metal dumbells. I bought 4 of these sets when Argos were doing them on offer last year and despite the pics they came with plastic spinlocks so if you are fussy make sure you double check.

from the reviews

"This is the second time I have bought this set as my Eldest took the first set away. They are as advertised the only difference between sets is that the Spinlocks are made of hard plastic on the second set and chrome plated steel on the first. I don't expect any problems but I guess the plastic is more likely to be broken"

Great price, the £6 delivery charge is a kicker though.
#10
Mine came with metal spin-locks. Guns are a pumpin'

I'll vote hot for the deal. These are ideal for people looking to do some light conditioning work or even as a starter kit if you've never lifted at all. However (as a weight lifter myself) I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who intends to do serious weight training. Gradual wear and tear on cast iron weight plates is a bit of a pain after continued use. That and once you use spring collars you'll never go back to spinlocks, they're terrible. Either save the money and invest in proper olympic gear (which naturally is more expensive, but better to use) or use an olympic weight room in a gym.
#12
Good find. Set ordered. Hope I can incentivise myself to actually use them when I get back from my summer hols.
#13
Good price! I was waiting ages for prices to come down, in the end i spent nearly £40 quid for the York 15kg Chrome set, so 20Kg for £22.99 is absolutely great value for money!
#14
good price, shame the plates aint reduced tho.
#15
Good price.
#16
already got a pair of these but eight isnt enough so another set reserved.
Cheers
#17
some deals on weight plates would be good

Am I stupid or is it 2x 10kg per dumbbell?
What would I do with 10kg per hand? Boxing?

I am looking for something half decent, where I could have at least 30kg per hand or more.

Well but 3 sets then. Each dumbell can take more weight than 10kg. I bought 4 sets for that reason. Buying these on offer is often cheaper than buying extra weights on their own.

Well as you dont have a gym at home, and as your lifting 30kg+ on each hand it must be at an extermal gym, why dont you approach some of the lads there and tell them your new to all of this, a bit in-experienced but have been lifting for that long that you are now lifting 30kg+ each hand, could they help you with advice on where to buy weights. just remind them that google doesnt seem to work for you. They should help you no problems. Trade with them or something, with lifting 30kg+ each hand you could spot for them no probs.
#21
Total beginner so I might just get these as a first set. Just wanna tone up arms and chest. I hope these will be ok for getting rid of those man boobs. :-)

If you're bicep curling 30kg+ with good form you already go to a gym. A lot.

I'm in same situation. Can curl between 30 & 35 kg. Thou I dont have weight at home. Need heavier plates. Any one know where I can get some 10kg plates to. Reasoanble price.

Got this set from Amazon a while back, excellent value for money. Bear in mind though that the grip on the bars is very rough/abrasive, and so not comfortable at all when lifting. I'd advise getting a pair of weight lifting gloves to use with these. Or as an alternative you can wrap cling film around the grips on the bars - works really well.

I get that sort of weight in my hand when I go for a wee.....

Ideal for boneheads or jailbirds, bit of a bug*er to smuggle in though...

I never realised there were so many big girls on this site, I tend to curl a car in one hand unless I fancy a challenge in which case I just pick up my house..... too much testosterone in this thread :D

Are you for real? At no point did I say I could curl a 40kg dumbell, muppet. Especially since it's a 20kg set... I don't own any imaginary weights. But trust me, you want gloves when using these.

Don't worry, it does not make you less of a man because you can't curl 35kg.....

Why?

funny all the people that come in these threads knowing exactly how heavy these are then whine cos they lift more.
Can get 17.5kg on a single bar with one of these sets iirc (dont think all the 0.5kg fit)

...always use this for warming up for my 50kg 1 arm curl with perfect form.. for reps...without going red or going 'gnnaaarrr'

I lift 100kg but I do go "gnnaaarrr" as I find it helps me to attract the attention of all the other meatheads in the gym giving themselves a hernia :D

Average price, saw them two places locally for the same last week.

Second hand seems to be where its at for weights, (gumtree etc) you can get massive sets with benches for next to nothing as people just want to get rid for the space :)

Are these the same as they used in the Shawshank Redemption?
