A good price IMO. The price of weights (or cast iron) seems to have really shot up in the last few years (so much so that my local athletic store no longer stocks any weights!) so it's good to see a fair price. Good job

Cheers!

You are right though in saying the prices of these weights have gone up by quite a bit over the past few months.

This is the best deal for this particular set I have come across lately.

already have some york dumbells and cast iron weights, how much can the bar hold?

70kg? 80kg?
#4
I bought two sets of spinlock dumbells recently and they are great, only annoying problem is that the spinlocks do come loose as you use them and need constant tightening, other than that great weights

Have a similar bar and use it with over 130kg - never thought about max weight - perhaps I should !:oops:

You could try deadlifting the bar with increasing weight to test it.

Always reckoned that when I loaded it up, if it didn't bend too much it was safe enough :whistling:

But then again, always reckoned I didn't need a spotter, but rolling the bar off me these days seems more painful than in my teens and twenties :x

These work out a lot cheaper, they're very good quality too, despite not being branded
#13
Bought some york branded ones in the past.. not the best quality...
#14
have got a set - very annoying to have to keep spinning the locks on and off to keep changing weights. expends far too much time and energy

locks do loosen as well if you're wobbling and your form is off.

Price has changed. Might want to update original post.

Hot. Get them Wed when they do the £5 voucher!

I brought these over 3 years ago for the same price.

The quality is great, however barbell could be 6ft
but at least its solid. I can put 120kg on it an it doesnt bend.
#18
I had some of these but they were to heavy to get out the box, so never really got to use them :p

When dead lifting, if it ain't bending, you aren't lifting enough :-D

Oh the memories of buying this type of thing twice in the last twenty years.. Guess what..... use them twice maximum :)
Must admit that they were put to great use this weekend - weighing down the dust sheets!

The ubiquitous york vinyl ones do indeed suck.

But these cast iron ones should last a lifetime. Voted hot.

I've got to agree. I have a lot of time for the kit the Decathlon stores sell. Their bikes are top notch and also their cycle accessories and clothing. Was only looking at those particular weights at the weekend and they did look good quality.

These are sh it. I bought this set about 2 weeks ago when they were doing the vouchers than.

They are cutting cost with these now, I was stunned to see they supplied plastic moulded spinlocks. The thing is, when I bought my first set from argos about 10-15 years ago, they came with metal spinlocks with a inner rubber seal so it doesn't get loose too easliy. These new plastic ones are a complete waste of time, takes you forever to turn in to the centre coz they are gripping the bar so much, they are meant to be 'spin...locks', and i'm sure they'll be worn out in no time. Also, I find York weights are poorly painted to compared to a few other brands I've seen.

Alright mate, I bought this set around 2 weeks aswell ago, did you get the $5 voucher with yours?
I'm also having trouble with the barbell and spinlocks, can only get them onto the barbell about an inch in the just won't turn anymore, got any ideas?

Cheers

Bought a set of nice looking weider dumbells quite some time ago from argoose too, had the metal spin locks but were too much hassle spinning on \ off so never got used. Had always thought about investing in some of these:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31eyqfXsUcL._SS500_.jpg

Bought the barbell set yesterday and have ordered a couple of pairs of the York Weightlifting Spring Collars from flea bay. Will hopefully do the trick.

EDIT:

Ooops, should have read the reviews from the Amazon site first:

"Bought these in hope they could replace the spinlock collars on my 1" bars but they are too big (probably because of the thread on the bars). They are a sturdy set however & would probably lock onto a smooth 1" bar brilliantly."

Oh well, back to the drawing board...
#26
Can anyone confirm that the barbell collars should push right up against the weights? As I previously mentioned I can't get the collars more than a couple of turns onto the barbell yet they're fine on the dumbell bars.

Any advice would be welcome, Thanks

Just bought these weights these weight the other day and I'd have to agree that they are useless. Brought mine back to Argos - plastic spinlocks are cheap crap - could never take them serious, not like the old metal ones. Bear in mind also that they come with 4 x 5kg discs, no 10 kgs!!!, so further down the line you'll prob want to add more weights, especially 10kg discs. You'd be better off saving up an extra 100 quid and getting a 100 kg olympic set which some sites are doing for 150quid delivered. Do the maths, it will work out better in the long run for better olympic gear.
