Thanks Mike, Yummy is the word....this is the system to get if you want something with the ability to play the latest games and perform all other tasks with ease....my favourite desktop from Dell.
#3

one word of caution though, the graphics card is not DX10 capable, only the 8800 series are at the moment, so if you want to play all the great looking gmaes in Feb / Mar time then you would need to change the card, it will still play all the new games mind, just a little less "shiny"
#6
ooh very nice find mike
#7
Anyone have any idea of the quality of the components inside this machine though?

A friend has told me I could build a similar spec one myself with high quality components - i.e. you don't know who makes the mobo, memory or graphics card...
#8
OEM parts mainly, none of the branded stuff.
#9
I'm not at all techie  so could one of you hotshots explain the difference between the two processors please:

Intel® Viiv Core 2 Duo E6300 Processor (1.86GHz, 1066MHz, 2MB)
OR
Intel® Core 2 Duo E6300 Processor (1.86GHz, 1066MHz, 2MB)

Which would you choose? I am saving up for a new computer and am already keeping an eye out for Mike's posts!!! :)

Intel Viiv Technology - Intel Viiv technology combines Intel Pentium D or Core 2 Duo processors with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to help manage, share and enhance multimedia entertainment.

In plain speak the cpu has a couple of extra instructions to assist with media center software operations.

Thank you Mike

I think it will be well after Feb or March before you see DX10 games.

Never been inside a Dell myself, but one word for you mate regarding building one at this price even using the cheapest things you can find.

Impossible!

right i think im gonna take the plunge on this!
just one question do you think that with the release date of vista being tomorrow and the increase in volume of vista pcs do you think there will be some better bargains than this over the next few weeks! would hate to take the plunge only to see a better offer in a week or two!

A couple of DX10 games are Crysis, ETA "Spring" but expect end of May at the earliest; Hellgate April 6. Just google "dx10 games"

Dell's new offers start on Wednesday - I'm thinking with the increase in vista pc's, the best offers will be had then - we'll have to wait and see!

thanks for the advice im gonna hold fire till then!when i finally do order is it worth me paying for the following peripherals

3in1 printer
intergrated hybrid tv tuner with dell mce remote
5.1 creative speaker setup
router
additional dvd drive

or would it be better to get these separately?

Get them seperately is my advice...you can now get twin freeview tuner PCI cards (about £60) that record two programmes at the same time...Dell printers(they are rebadged Lexmarks) are naff in my opinion and have very expensive replacement cartridges..you can get a DVD drive for about a tenner so overpriced on Dell...I'm not sure about the speakers...perhaps someone else can advise on these.

You can pick up a Linskys router quite cheaply..they often have deals at PCworld..or at this link

Dell offer change day is Thursday each week with sometimes new offers at the weekend.

Buying a dvd drive from dell may be the best option as they are mainly all sata now and cheap sata ones are few and far between atm.
#20
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=16271

this is DVDRW sata drive for £22 plus postage
[mod]#21
Thanks for that Currychops, its cheap enough ;-) needs a cable to go with that too though as dell are tight with power cables now.

Overall he may be still better off buying from dell as the pc comes with a DVDRW and he just needs a DVD drive and dell are selling that for £23.50 fitted
#22
i think the additional dvd drive was 20 quid so i will go for that and not order anything else and get them separately!

mike will this deal go on thursday then? dont wanna miss out and i dont want to see a better deal a week or so down the line!

It's diificult to predict what'll happen with Dell prices....whether they are preparing an "all out" campaign with attractive pricing to launch Vista remains to be seen....although they did seem to launch in the press last Saturday.

This is a good price for the 9200 at this spec...but Mike is far more of an expert on Dell pricing so I'll leave it to him to guide you.

I wish I knew what dell will do next week, its like the stock market!

It all hinges around the question of do you want Vista installed and no option to go back to XP? If so wait, if not then place an order for it on Wednesday evening and see from my posts on Thursday morning what the price is with Vista, if there is a significant difference (which I doubt) then phone to cancel the Wednesday order and go with the Vista offering.

As to will it be cheaper in 2 or 3 weeks, I doubt even dell knows that answer:thumbsup:
#25
sounds like a good plan mike i will buy it wednesday and assess thursday! are there any further discounts on dell stuff if you open a business account?

thanks for everyones help

It's not a bad offer elvinio but the spec is somewhat short of that on the one in this post.

Just a reminder for any purchasers ..don't forget quidco.

So exactly how much difference is there between the two graphics cards and the type of hard drive, do these make up for the difference in processor speed and price?? :?

Not really a better offer, still a good price but the graphics card is very weak, in fact it is one of the worst you can get in PCI-express format.

The 5000+ processor is slightly faster than a stock e6300, but I would go for the e6300 as with a 90 second tweak in the bios can beat the FX series.

beerman has said it all about the graphics card....the twin hard drive raid setup on this system speeds up processing.

Just wondering as going on the link on the first post I can't get it below £784.73.

are you reducing the warranty to the minimum?
#32
Cheers, I'm obviously just a simpleton :-D
I don't want it to for playing games so probably wouldn't notice that much of a difference.

Yeah

Edit - Ignore me, I thought I had. Obviously my multi tasking skills are not working today, back to work.... ;)

I'm not sure you can tweak the bios on Dells..mike T will know.

You can speed up the hard drives but not much else on mainstream dells

The only thing you have to do is change the warranty to 1 year collect and return, it will knock it down to £678.

Actually that other system seems like a good price to be honest.

Here is a quick benchmark to show the difference in the two processors:

http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/core2duolaunch_07130680720/12576.png

The X2 5000 processor is a £190 processor on it's own so that is a very good buy the more I think about it. For those who don't overclock then get this, sell the graphics card and put in a x1900gt at a cost of £103 and you have one very fast system indeed.

Oh, I myself have not been into a Dell bios so if that is the case then the x2 5000 system is actually the better buy.

my main focus is for this to be a media pc so i can share files over my home network around the house and with my 360 and record tv! what would be the best choice out of the two? it needs to be quiet as well!

well if you don't want to mess about changing graphics cards this is your best buy...my son has a Dell 9150 ..of roughly the same spec as this one..and it is quiet and performs well.

Is there any reason to think that an NVidia 8800 will not work on this rig? If I can sell the crappy Dell 19" Value Flat Panel for £50 on Ebay, wait until the 8800s get to £200 then you have yourself a pretty good game rig for £630 + £200 = £830. Sounds good to me?
