This is a Nexbox a1 with different name on it. Its a good little box but the s912 didn't perform as well as I'd of liked! When playing films on Kodi they are really dark, few boxes I've tested lately suffer from this. Luckily I was given one to test and try
#2
Wonder what would cause the screen to be so dark? Could you recommend a good alternative, around the same cost?

The S912 boxes that are out seem to be a variety of rebadges (I think?). There was the H96 Pro 3GB/16GB one I added a few weeks ago but seems Gearbest told many buyers they weren't getting them in stock - will have to check up on what happened with that.

Hard to find reviews of the (H96 Pro) 3GB RAM version (seems some are getting them?) but this reviewer is not impressed https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R26ITM6NLPOYNB/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B01KH8JBAE

I read somewhere that these newer boxes running android 6 are pretty buggy, anyone have any experience with them that can confirm or deny this?

No idea what causes it? I get boxes sent out all the time to review and noticed a few lately have been doing the same thing. When I play certain films I know how they should look and can tell straight away there dark... I've messed with resolution settings, display from HDMi to default, turned HDR off, reset the box to factory standard and still get the same thing!

I've been testing one called an Aodin this week, its not the best spec but runs really well for what it is. Only thing is it could do with a better remote one with a mouse if you want to use more app's

I've done all that. I've tried the bootable sd card which didn't work. The amlogic burn tool, which will bring anything back to life, didn't recognise it either.

If you plug it in, it still shows a power light so you might be able to rescue it if you shorted some pins inside it, which i think is the absolute last resort, but as far as it is for me, it's toast.

Thing is, i've just started using Plex & a Chromecast to watch the content on my NAS drive and it's brilliant. If I didn't have a hankering for saturday afternoon soccer for "free" .. *cough* .. i'd probably not bother getting another box.

It depends when you ordered it. The Chinese National holidays has just finished so everything should be back to normal from the 10th October. There's likely to be a delay in delivery too, whilst the Chinese postal system clears any backlog.

Not sure if everyone is aware but there is a court case back on Oct 27th about the legality of these boxes sold with kodi pre-installed. It could be next year before a decision is known.

Surely the court case is about the addons that are installed with Kodi, not Kodi itself being installed?

On that box i don't think it can be. this is probably why i ended up bricking mine because i was trying to update it, but even if you don't, it should still be more than fine for what you'd use it for.

The EU Commission have said that watching pirated streams isn't illegal, but it's not been ratified in law yet, which could also take some time.

https://torrentfreak.com/watching-pirate-streams-isnt-illegal-eu-commission-argues-161001/

I'd imagine the guy would be looking at that as some kind of defence, but even when he'd been nicked for selling 'fully loaded' boxes, he continued to sell the boxes as "clean" but actively encouraged people to install addons that would allow them to continue watching pirated content.

But then i've just got my new box that came "fully loaded" so the first thing i did was reboot to recovery and factory reset it ..

I've got one of these and it is indeed the same as the Nexbox A1 and the firmware works on it too, although at the moment, the Yundoo and Nexbox firmwares give the same performance.

I have no issues with the dark video playback that some seem to report but have noticed that turning off HDMI Self adaption does make things a little clearer.

The likely issue with those having the darker video will be to do with whether the TV is set to RGB limited or full. If you have an option to change the setting then play around with the settings and you might get the picture that you want.

They key feature missing from all the latest S905x and S912 SOC's is the auto adjust frame rate, which just doesn't work and needs to be resolved in order to make the video playback just that little bit better.

None of the latest AMLogic players can match the Dolamee D5 Rockchip RK3229 for colour reproduction and depth though and the difference is noticeable.

That's not to say that the AML's are bad at all, they are very good but when you see the difference, it does make it seem a slightly lesser experience.

That said, the RK3229 is still running on Lollipop, which has had a greater amount of development time, so I'm sure that when Marshmallow becomes more mature that things will improve to the same level.

Kodi have stated in their defence and quite rightly too as far as I'm am concerned, the installation of Kodi does not break any law in any jurisdiction. Its the various addons which may do so, which are outside the control of kodi itself.

I've heard you could pay a fee to get this type of channel access but would question the quality of the stream.

Does the Dolamee RK3229 have auto adjust frame rate , And is anyone working on fixing the Amlogic S912 frame rate?

Does the Dolamee RK3229 have auto adjust frame rate , And is anyone working on fixing the Amlogic S912 frame rate?

It's not working at the moment on the D5 but the effects are far less than with the AMLogic SOC's.

With it being on Lollipop though, the chances of getting it working should be good because it is a feature that does work on other boxes.

The fact that none of the vendors have yet got frame rate adjustment working on Marshmallow yet does indicate that it must be missing from the SDK, so will be for AMLogic to resolve, which I do think that they will in time. Just what that timescale will be though is anybody's guess.

And if anybody does purchase the Dolamee, stick with the firmware that comes on the box for now (D5-userdebug 5.1.1 LMY49F eng.melvin.20160820.083343 test-keys) as the September update has regressions.

Yes there are some builds for AMLogic SOC's.

Worth reading the threads here.

Compared to other equivalents that you can buy then yes.

But it is a genuine UK supplier, so all the trading laws come into effect.

Plus they do have their own support forums, so you may get greater levels of support.

Yes, different settings, setup and especially HD audio can make a difference between user experiences.

If Librelec is sufficient for you and most of what you play is 1080p or lower then one of the S905x boxes might suit as I've been testing today on a TX5 Pro and it works very well.
