In my experience, I wouldn't worry about the phone coming away from the holder. What can happen, and has happened to me twice, is the link between the ball hinge and the stem/handlebar grip can weaken and eventually snap under strain. This is more likely to happen with a big heavy phone (I use a Nexus 6 in a hard case). This happened to me yesterday (not with this exact model, but a similar one) but the hard case and tempered glass screen protector did their jobs. The phone staying in the mount probably didn't hurt either. I had used the holder for at least 2000 miles before it broke.

Thanks for the detailed reply, part of me likes the idea of be able to put my phone on the bike and the other half is don't be so stupid...I've got a normal s7....I haven't found a decent full screen tempered glass protector that's if they can do one for the slightly curved silly edges, I have got a spigen armour which will take drops and stuff but maybe not a full on drop on a road at speed.

The Nexus 6 has a curved edge to the screen too. I went through a couple of really nasty looking screen protectors with big air gaps before I discovered intelliarmor. See http://www.intelliarmor.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-white.html. Not sure if they have a UK distributor yet, I bought direct from USA. Expensive but well worth it. there may be some reviews on XDA.
