Zanussi are the best!!! We've had ours for 7 years and still going strong. Some friends of ours went through nearly every other model with fault after fault and the washing machine repair guys told them to get a zanussi as they never get called out to fix them!

Not any more. Since your one was made, Zanussi have been taken over by Electrolux. This means it's a tossup between whether the PCB (electronic "brain") will blow up first, or the bearings will fail - because it's a sealed tub this will write off the machine.

I've said this before, but as a washing machine repairman myself, I always recommend: -

Budget: Amica - comes with 2 years warranty, great solid basic machines.
Mid range: Bosch. 2 years warranty, look for the ones with the "half moon" door handle rather than the square door handle, as these are the German-manufacturered ones, rock-solid quality.
Money no object: ISE10 - 10 years warranty, simply amazing machines and cheap to repair if and when they ever do go wrong.

I'd stop recommending Amica, they may have a warranty and they may not break down, but they are noisey as anything and do not wash clothes. my nan sent hers back cause it just did not wash clothes. I'm all for reliability but this is silly.

our good old Candy washing machine just broke down after nearly 10 years in service for the family (under £200 when we bought it I think), the washing drum seems to have come loose? probably not worth repairing?

so probably need a decent replacement, any recommendations, budgets around £250? plenty around £200-£250 price range, Indesit, Hotpoint, and even good old Candy, any recommendation? thanks.

EDIT: and what about this Zanussi from RGBDirect? any good?

Good old Candy not so good anymore... Bought one that broke just out of the warranty period, and the bloke who came to repair it said it wasn't worth it, because they're rubbish!
