If you really want to , you can set up a custom tab - add all categories, except groceries...

http://www.hotukdeals.com/custom-settings

In there, then view with the "custom" tab at the top.

Voila.
#3
P.S. I think you were in the "groceries" tab when you took that screenshot - so you'll only see grocery deals there.

Nice screen grab. But does it not prove all by itself that supermarket deals are not, as you state, dross but are in actual fact very popular with HUKD members?
#5
But the actual hottest deals of the week do not include any of the above...
#6
Still more popular than the 'Mobiles' section though ;-)

As you said, that box only appears if you have Groceries selected as your topic rather than All. It is quite surprising the amount of interest the groceries section actually gets though eh?
#7
No offense Codify, but you criticise new members for posting "dross" but you yourself are a "new member" and looking at your previous posts, you are yet to post a deal yourself. So maybe before criticising any deals posted, you should go find some to post yourself...

This topic has been discussed before a few months ago and general consensus was to have 1 thread for each supermarket (e.g. TOP TESCO GROCERY DEALS). It appears the noobs are just posting any supermarket deal (e.g. BOGOF on bog roll ;) We are starting to get overwhelmed by them again. Maybe a gentle reminder of the best approach is required.....
#14
No, the large threads were a temporary measure, until the new forum came along, and we now have a seperate groceries category. As I said, you can set up a custom view to completely ignore these if you don't want to see them.

But that's not remotely helpful because it means when an actual 'hot' deal, the supposed point of this site, comes along - like the free gammon from tescos etc - then we miss it completely because we were tired of the 800 posts a week telling us the amazingly unknown fact that supermarkets have buy one get one free offers.
#16
I think people are just being ungrateful if I'm honest.

A deal is a deal. Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean it's not a great deal to someone else - a hot deal in fact. Everyone has different wants and needs in life.
#17
I can understand exactly what the original poster is saying, the sheer volume of supermarket deals makes it more difficult to see actual hot deals.

Plus in my opinion the quality of the supermarket deals is getting worse every week, most of the deals published are on every other week so are more like bog standard supermarket deals than hotones and i agree that its new members who are posting them all.

Someone soon will probably list every supermarket deal from sainsburys website on here and take over the whole system.

These deals are duplicated time after time because people cant be bothered to search to see if its been posted already they are more interested in getting hot votes and rep than anything else, for example today ive reported SIX duplicate posts alone and all were from newish members.

My suggestion would be that people looking for supermarket deals go to the "groceries" tab where anyone doing online shopping can see all the deals together which im sure would be easier, rather than the rest of us having to set up custom filters to get rid of them.

You can't really have it both ways! You are the ones who decide what a "hot" deal is. People were complaining about the supermarket deals on the old site, admin has created a grocery category for them now. But now you say you do want to see the supermarket deals - but only the really good ones - that is what the voting system is for - you are the ones who decide their temp.

E.g. If you are in Groceries/all/hot and you can see the little box on the right, telling you the top 5 grocery deals of the week. )EDIT - just like the screenshot in the first reply above)

Nobody wants it both ways, we want it one good way. Where the gazillions of rubbish deals about half price biscuits are all in one thread (or preferable on another site but that isn't going to happen so) and people could choose to make a seperate thread for something that was actually hot.
We had this, and then you switched to this disaster of a site and removed the change.
So now you're suggestion is to turn off all grocery deals but then repeatedly check the grocery section for the hot ones?
Yeah, that's a step up.

Yeah I bet the Jewish/Muslim community thought that was a brilliant deal, deal of the century:roll: Oh hang on, no they probably weren't interested in the slightest for some strange reason. Didn't see them posting complaints about posts advertising pork that was no use the THEM though:thinking:

Agreed..... and think its the BEST improvement thats been made to the new site!

Each to their own and all that, but Ive never really seen the point of supermarket BOGOFs, when every supermarket has them and effectively they are normal pricing! (By that I dont mean for a specific item - just a general thing.)

But hey, I dont have to see them anymore - so post what you like - as long as you label them groceries!!!!:p

It sounds like you do want it both ways!

I hate grocery deals - but just switch them off by filtering. It sounds like you want to switch them off as well - unless you might be interested in them!

Crystal Balls are found in the "Entertainment" section!:p

I suppose if it were possible to set the filters to a temperature for EACH forum, you'd get your wish - but I doubt that will happen. Nice if it could I suppose

Yes artemis, to me, you are saying you want it both ways. Why not set up a custom setting to exclude groceries. Then from time to time, pop into the groceries category, and see the hottest that week.

So despite the quite clear explanation of how I don't want it both ways you've ignored that and just restated that I do. useful!
The answer to your question, which I hope you already know, is that supermarket hot deals don't last a week and I don't care what I could have got 4 days ago.
The 'vast' majority of supermarket deals are not hot, or even tepid, they are the exact same pricing policies that all supermarkets have had for years. They also drown out the actual hot deals that pop up from time to time.

Not true on a few counts.

Supermarket deals normally last for a minimum of 1 week, an average of 2 and some even 4. There are also a different layer of long term offers.

There is some truth in your other statement about pricing policies but it's not always so. Certainly at the moment most promotions seem to be reflected across the big 4 supermarkets but January often has this.

The most important thing to remember is that for an awful lot of people the grocery bill is one of their major expenses, especially those with families.
For whoever it is in the family that does the shopping it's important to be able to cherry pick the supermarket offers and that is why it is invaluable to know who has what on.

People shopping in this fashion are usually able to save themselves a good % of their shopping budget over a year and in a lot of cases that is a lifesaver. I can't speak for others but I can assure you that I can save well over 20% of my grocery bill by cherry picking supermarket deals.

Just because you might be lucky enough to not worry about your grocery bill and to pick up what you want doesn't mean to say everyone's the same.

Live and let live

Same as. Without the poster of Asdas corned beef deal I would have missed out on that AND the tomatoes. As they're tinned I can stockpile the ******s for when I need them and not have to pay full price at that point.

I really don't see what the problem is. If people don't want supermarket tat, do what Emma suggested and use the (unfriendly to setup, if you ask me but there you go) custom filter and don't select groceries in your list. Sorted.
#28
Me too. I'm well prepare to go to ASDA and buy a year's supply of cans, Morrisons for my year's supply of soup and Tescos for my year's supply of breakfast cereal whenever they are on offer. :p

You've also got to understand that this site has changed since it was first created - as it is the members who make it what it is. I actually don't like the supermarket deals either, but that's my personal opinion. I rarely use them, I would only use Tesco grocery codes from time to time. I basically just ignore them. It's not hard to skim by them.

But as we have grown, people post what they want to see, people vote on what they like. As a website, I don't think it's possible to make a solution for everyone's niggles, you just have to make do with what you've got.
