Welcome to HUKD :)
I'm sorry to hear about this, if you could mention the name of this company I may be able to shed some light on this.
Have you searched the forums for this company?

I have to agree with the previous post to yours. All the offers tend to be the same and from the same companies so it looks as if Hotdeals is getting paid for those.
How is the site funded? Are the moderators voluntary workers? I guess not!
I have nothing against it, but it would be better if they came clean about it.

Putting genuine deals on the site, it appears from your experience, is quiet difficult.

I don't know about this situation fully so another mod would have to comment, but in the meantime I just have to say that the boards are becoming harder and harder to police. Nothing to do with not having enough moderators, we can handle the work load, it's just the fact that there's stuff EVERYWHERE.

assaid in another thread, many/most deals are posted by members so no favouritism is applied

Hi kDmG

We are constantly vigilant on this forum, checking out all posts from new members, from relatively unknown companies. When a new member posts their first post about a new company - we always check it out.

We have explained our reasons by PM as you know. It just so happened that another new member posted about the same company as yourself, a few hours previously, and we never received any return communications.

We do these things because we do not want the members here to be exposed to invasive advertising, we're a community forum and not a stage for merchants. I'd like to think we do a good job, but we also rely on members to report posts which they may be suspicious of.

We do not treat newbies as victims... if you saw the amount of self-promotion we have had to move behind the scenes, you might understand where we are coming from. :)

Welcome to HUKD.

We have "problematic" retailers who spam our site with offers which are of no use simply to get free advertising. These retailers are banned. We have been asked about this previously in other threads and whether we ban merchants and users were happy to hear our stance on it.

As I say, most offers posted are with bigger companies. Simply because those are companies our members use and like to post about.

Welcome to HUKD :)
I am just a member like you and the OP, if I hear of any 'hot' deals I post them. The deals could be from any company/shop/website and as far as I know HUKD do not get paid. I certainly don't.

And all those professional pictures on the deals page? Do members search them out to post against their latest offer, cut, paste, rework them to look good? I guess not.

yes it is easy to post a deal and add a picture of each item with a link to the page required, there are links here to threads explaining to members how to do this, take a look :)

Oh. The conspiracy theories...

They're usually pictures from the retailer's website. 99% of the time. Click through and you're likely to see the same pictures. We're hardly going to take our own photographs. lol. All of the "promotional pictures" of products found on the internet are usually taken by the manufacturer and sometimes modified by the retailer to stamp their offer over them.

errr Queensgate I think you've just missed the whole point of this site...

kDmG - If we have a problem with a merchant we try to sort it out with them. If we are continually spammed by them after asking them to use the proper merchant submission form then we do remove any deals by them as we cannot trust that members are posting them in good faith. Fortunately most merchants follow the rules and the list of merchants who have to be blacklisted is extremely short.

As this is a forum which is supposed to be genuine recommendations from the public we are very sensitive to merchants passing themselves off and are quite cautious if a brand new member posts a series of links to a site we are not familiar with.

Hey all..

Thanks for the replies.. and I do respect the mods/admin's decisions.. however.. it just becomes difficult for me to see the situation cause my first deal/bargain got slammed. Yes, there are some newbies who can be traders..but remember.. newbies also bring fresh blood and can liven things and make forums lot more exciting.

The company I am referring to is Thane Direct.

First thing that I did before posting my post was a search for Thane Direct (just to make sure I am not duplication bargains). Swell.. no one had posted that before..though there were about two threads regarding Thread in the bargain section..

Anyway, in the pull down menu to select the company I was posted a bargain for, Thane Direct did appear too.. so that's my issue.. if the company can be selected..surely that means I could post a bargain.. else perhaps a vBulletin hack should be installed to prevent "newbies" from posting a new thread till they have got a couple of posts in the forum to show genuinity.

Perhaps my suggestion is going towards.. having a certain way where newbies can only post about certain companies only... e.g. amazon, dell etc.. . cause it does become really difficult otherwise to guess what is good or not..

TBH.. next time I get a deal.. how can I be safely assured that its not going to be pulled off the site? I guess the simple answer is.. post and if its not "on" then it shall be removed.

Kind regards.

i guess newbies are not to know if a merchant is banned, maybe there could be a sticky for them?
#16
Very few deals are removed in proportion to the high volume that are posted, but it's still quite a high number due to self-promotion, etc.

However if the deal had been posted by a senior member it also would have been pulled.

I always add pictures to my deals. and i am just a member. It seems you have got us all wrong Queensgate!!

kDmG - I'm sorry if you feel your deal was "slammed". As I said we are very cautious with newbies posting up a deal on a site we are not familiar with. We are of course more than happy to have new members and I firmly believe that the more newbies we have pitching in and contributing the better off this site is. As I'm sure you can understand, in order to keep the site free of merchant spam we have to keep our spam radar on super sensitive all the time. It is a regular occurrence to catch spamming this way and we have found the site "pimped" as a source of free traffic on several forums so we know it is targetted for spam by small e-commerce sites.

We are open to merchants sending us their deals directly and they will be reviewed by mods and posted if applicable and of value to members.

That's what we all do, sometimes the 'search' function does not work that well and we post a deal that has already been posted and a Mod removes it.

Yep.. I respect the fact that HOTUK's got to watch out for spammers.. but guess my suggestion would be.

1. Have a list that identifies black-listers (if there is one around.. its hard to find it)
2. Remove the blacklisters from the pull-down menu you can use when posting a new bargain/deal.

This way.. atleast noobs can have a chance to post a bargain should they come across one.

But like I mentioned.. I respect admins/staff decision. There is no ill-feeling towards the decision.. its just good to discuss about it as we have done in this thread.

And thanks to every1 for chipping in / assuring me on this thread.

Cheers.

It is good to discuss it  It's hard to make decision on posts to pull. We have even had threads where people are vehemently claiming not to be from the company and we have solid evidence that they are.

Thanks for the discussion :)

This is a case of not being able to please everyone. Newbies and members can add new merchants. Thus, we learn of new merchants. Unfortunately, this can be abused by unscrupulous advertisers.

In one thread, we have someone suggesting that we limit the list or who can post deals.

In another thread we have someone complaining that we are biased and only allow certain retailers.

We can't win either way lol...

Yep, it's all a conspiracy, and I shot JFK from the grassy knoll (but don't tell any one because it's a secret) http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h276/DianneOnly/tease.gif

I can verify this,as i had a deal pulled (fairly recently) because unbeknown to me the dealer had also been banned from HUKD.So it is not a question of noobs being picked on,it is just the mods doing their job,and a damned good one at that.:)
