it's just a server problem, i'm sure it worked on your next 'query' i.e refreshing the page

Probably better to use the above link. there's a lot of people here who will come to this thread expecting to see a cute little bug for sale ;o)

The server possibly had one of its moments just as it was loading the page for you... happens sometimes.

Whilst you're quite right that glitches can and do occur - but they are definately getting more and more frequent.

Is it down to number of posts or number of users on the site? ie is it bandwidth related or just sheer size of the database?

Today, Ive probably been presented with the "under maintenance" message about 10 times at various times of the day. Ive obviously seen that message before, but not to this level. Has the site just got too successful?

Actually I think it's more likely to be an ISP problem. I get it occasionally but only when my internet connection is playing up. If you lose a packet along the way the whole page freezes partway:thumbsup:

Possibly a browser problem, I've also experienced the same error in IE7 quite often but never in FireFox.

I agree with that Ray, I get less problems in Firefox.

Yeah, the database issues and the site grinding to a complete halt are most likely to be bandwidth issues, i.e. too many requests to the server.

The site is currently spread across two (or more?) servers, and it's not really the power of these servers that makes a difference but how the load is spread accross them I think.

We're just far too successful... but I'm sure it'll all be sorted before we get major major Chritmas rush problems. :-D

Seem to get it whatever I use (ie Opera, Firefox, IE7 or IE6)

Since the core of the site is "Hot Deals" - and I cant see anything getting easier with regard loadings etc, have you thought about perhaps splitting things? ie At the mo, it looks like the "misc" is being refreshed the most, with often pretty inane posts building up peoples post counts or just as a "chat room". Each to their own, but if doing so is affecting things elsewhere, then perhaps this particular forum could be set on its own, within the domain, but different server and different database. Just thinking out loud!!! I'm sure you've got things in hand.

Admin has said in the past that as far as he is aware there's no issue with the Misc threads affecting server load. The site tends to slow down when the number of users online at once goes up, often above 4,000 users at a time.

Ok, cheers.

It's not Misc - it's just the number of people accessing it. So we keep adding more hardware etc.

Cool. Just not fast enough though!!! :giggle:

Whats the average numbers online at one time? I know the highest is about 5000 - I was using it at the time and running into all sorts of problems! I know on some forums I use, they limit the number of users at any one time - but obviously not a solution for here!
