Two in two days.
Average of one a day... so far.

Once the "old skin" is no longer available that average will increase.

Surely a mod can just close my account..... do I really have to change my email, request password, email the powers that be and hope for the best?

Ridiculous.

Easier and more fun to go out with a banning.

There isn't a "close account" process.

You may have noticed all those that have been "banned" still have (most of) their comments in all the threads they have contributed to & their "Profile" page is still intact.

I don't think you understand the difference or similarities between deleting your account, being banned and having an account closed.

Neither do I...... obviously a lot more to this than meets the eye. Otherwise it would be very straight forward..... as you say interesting.

I'm guessing you can't delete your account as that would also delete any threads you started. If these included deal threads the referral link, and with it the site's income, would also be deleted and that's never going to happen.

Anyone leaving that has a decent deal running would not cost this site anything, 'cos any deal running would have been jumped on straight away if it were any good. If the deal got deleted, someone else would post it if it were that good, or, its time, plus any money to be made, is/was over.
But, having said all that, peoples threads and posts do not get deleted if they "leave".
Did you know, if you delete your own post, it is not actually deleted, but just marked as such and is not displayed. It is still there on this site's database.
That I think is a bit disturbing.

Q: An organisation is holding information about me. How do I get it?

If you believe an organisation holds personal information about you, you can ask them to provide you with a copy.

In order to do this you will need to:

* make your request in writing (email is acceptable), clearly explaining or listing the information you want;
* keep a copy of this request for your records. If you need to make a complaint to us at a later date we will ask you for a copy of your original request;
* we would also recommend sending your letter by recorded delivery so you can be sure of its safe delivery.

I hear what you are saying, but, posting comments on here is not really "information about me".
My name isn't published. I go by the name jumpingphil, which, I hope, doesn't give too much info about me to all and sundry.
You might work out my name is Phil and from my profile you can see I live in Harlow, but I suspect there are loads of us that meet that criteria so I am not overly bothered.
I would like a utility though that does delete all your posts, permanently, if/when you decide to leave. I don't know why, but I just think I would feel that little bit more comfortable, after all, when a post is more than a couple of days old, does it really matter if it is still there or not?
#23
Phil (from Harlow), the removal of all the comments of one member is possible, of course; accidentally, or otherwise:

"fanpages is being deleted"

It is just the execution of a SQL statement after all!

Colin (of Sunderland), do you recall this thread?

"How Do I Delete My Account"

Both you & vibeone raised concerns over the retention (& non-disclosure) of personal information.

aScottishBloke provided some insight into the site's "policy" on this (at the time).

BFN,

fp.

PS. Note the thread is now locked.

You missed a word out.
I know, but I'm not sure how many others know, that when you "delete" a post, it only gets marked as deleted so that it doesn't show up, but it is still there on the database.

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine went on my pc and posted a comment which they found funny. I deleted the post, almost instantly, but the moderator it was aimed at brought it back.

I'm sure that is correct in that it's just a straight forward SQL statement or even just a button in the database but the knock on effect isn't so simple particularly for frequent posters who have numerous posts within threads. If all the posts are removed it makes a mess of those threads as in some cases half the conversation will be missing with remnants of it still quoted in posts. On some threads it may not matter as they're unlikely to be referenced or active but there are some long running threads still going and may contain useful information which has been indexed in searches.

If people have posted something they no longer want to be seen then they can go and delete those isolated posts, if they've been consistently posting information they didn't want to be seen then clearly a lot more caution is required from them when posting online.

A lesson many seem to never learn. If this internet thing ever catches on, there will be a lot of embarrassed people in years to come. ;)

Could they not assign all comments by a member who wants his account deleting to "unnameduser001", that way the comments stay but anoninimity (sp?) is retained

The quotes would still be in the original username and it would also get pretty confusing trying to follow a thread with several usernames that have been changed to an anonymous version.

Have the mods rename your account to v!beone

Phil/John: The thread I quoted above was created by Josh (r3tract) because all my comments had been removed from every thread I had ever contributed to.

However, all threads I created remained intact. I know that comments are not lost forever if manually "deleted" (but are only "soft deleted").

When the Development team admitted they had accidentally removed all my comments, every comment I had ever made was reinstated (including those I had purposely deleted in the past). I then had to find the intentionally deleted comments & re-remove them from view.

Yes, all comments are just flagged as "deleted" (with a status [column] set in the database), & what we see in each thread is the chronological view of the comments excluding the "deleted" comments.

BFN,

fp.

PS. As a Moderator/Administrator of a Forum that uses vBulletin, I can confirm that the "soft deletion" of comments is an option (as is the complete removal of a comment, if desired) & anybody with the relevant Forum privileges can view/reinstate "soft deleted" comments if they wish to.

You know what? ......I'm not bothered about having all my previous comments deleted. I just want to close my account so i can't use it anymore. A little bit like how you would close a shopping account, or a membership. How hard is that for organisers?....... obviously too hard and that in itself is a bit of a joke.

If I wanted to close my youtube or facebook account I could do that..... what makes hotukdeals any different?

just change your password to garbled nonsense and leave a note saying you left the site in your location status. I was recently impressed with how google can sweep clean everything public in one click across all their websites (of course the security service still have everything).

But I'm sure it's been stated by mods...one in particular that certainly if you use fs/ft they have your eBay user details etc...and also in my case if you don't use fs/ft they keep info.

They do, then in threads like this they deny it, even if information was supplied directly to the mods in a PM, if it is information that can identify a living individual, then it is subject to the act.

I saw the thread but it doesn't change the point I was making, the mechanics of removing your comments may have been simple but it still would have made a mess of threads you'd posted in particularly as you've posted regularly.

I tried that, but when you change your password you have to retype it.... plus you cant see what you typed so you would have to write it down, although I suppose I could do a garbled one, write it down, copy for verification then throw away the bit of paper.

I am stunned to learn the lengths I have to go to when surely a mod could just turn my account off / ban me / shut my account down. What are the real reasons behind them being so reluctant to shut down an account?
