sorry to get involved but you could just pm admin or a mod

You'd be better off using the "contact us" link, As this post could be seen as self promo...
#3
(URL removed - mods can PM me for URL if they want to view the site prior to making a decision

I can't actually see comps on your site, only clicky links to other companies comps like HMV, play.com etc.....

On another note, Your site its formating very well for me, I have to scroll sideways to see the whole of the page.

And my post was in no way "flaming", If I thought you was attempting to advertise your site i'd have reported the post, I just think that saying "this is my site" then linking to it, would be seen as self promotion.

iom-rf there's currently 2 domps, in the forums mate (they are usually posted on the main homepage too but we've currently got a big news article that we're pushing to help promote a product, that gaming chair if you're bothered as to where I mean).

And yes, the site isn't currently optimised very well, we know about it, but thx for pointing that out.

We are looking to re-do the site all together in the not-too-distant future though...

My comment about being mildly-flamed was meant light-heartedly, apologies. :whistling:

you seem well aware that this site is not for self promotion, yet you are asking for you to self promote :? Yes all sites run competitions, but they dont come on her blatantly selp promoting

actually, I'm not aware of that.

I just thought I'd show the courtesy of asking permission first. Chances are that noone would have known the site in question belongs to me, so I could have just gone ahead and posted, but no, I thought I'd show the courtesy that I'd expect to be shown to me, as a webmaster, and ask permission.

The thing that counts with "self promotion" is do you actually gain anything out of those comps?
banned#11
if you werent aware why have you not posted the comps, you have been a member for over a year, and i think most know within the first day that we arent allowed to self promote on this site, nor spam

Other than visits to my site, and potentially people returning to read our site, no.

Not that it's anything really to do with you, but I only took over the running of said site around March this year, and only recently (last couple or months) got it all sorted out and working properly.

Is that explanation sufficient for you?

I was referring to this site  , and why post here if you didnt want a response, you could have contacted the team yourself

i think this quote speaks for itself "I'd ask if this is ok first, as it kinda is self-promotion"

I'm getting rather tired now. I've asked for a response from the Mods, though didn't "ban" replies from users (aside from the fact that's not possible, this is a FORUM). However, I would have thought other users would have not bothered replying unless they knew the answer (and tbh I'd have probably still waited for the official answer before posting the comps). That'snot to say I don't want to hear people's posts, IOM-RF's have been particularly useful.

Why do you think companies advertise dompetitions in newspapers, on radios, on other websites? It is self promotion, anyone with any common sense can see that, surely?!
#16
The short of it is we don't allow self promotion in any forum. As mentioned above, please use the 'Contact Us' link in the forums. Thanks.

im not sure that was the response he was looking for :giggle:

So you don't allow what I outlined, but then you mention using the contact us link??

Is it a yes, or a no (at the moment, I'm reading it as a "no" but I'm not certain...!)

Well it wasn't an entirely straight answer if that's what you mean, so no, it wasn't! :giggle: :giggle:

As you requested a more detailed explanation. If you post links in the forum to your own website's deals or competitions, that is self promotion. Using the 'Contact Us' link provides anyone with a self interest in any of those things, a channel to get their 'offer' posted for them.

The OP does have an extremely valid point that all competitions currently on the board are self promotion in some way or another, so I can't see a problem with it myself as long as it's a free competition.
banned#22
In other words, if you contact them and they think its a fantastic deal, not to be missed etc, etc, admin or a mod will post the deal for you...............sorted next question :-D
#23
I don't think you'll get a definitive answer on the thread as its best using the contact us link because thats sent directly to the Admin.

Its under his discretion whats allowed and whats not, The only thing thats iffy IMO is because you have ads on your site (with referral links) this could be seen as a way of getting traffic (from the comp) and the referral links generating you money (so counts as self gain, which is where the "self promotion" bit kicks in.)

So unfortunately I don't think it will be allowed, but no harm in asking.

it is only self promotion if the person gaining by it is posting, when i post a comp i dont gain, when you post a comp you dont gain, unless you are in some way a part of it

sassie, although your attitude on this thread has kinda P'd me off a little, THANK YOU for clarifying! Rep added.

No business, merchant, website owner etc. posts their own competition in the Odds Are... forum, if they were caught doing that, it would be self promoting, which you know isn't allowed here.

Self promotion is when someone is posting their own 'offer' to benefit from it themselves.
#29
Thanks for sorting this out Rayman and sassie, and thanks to the others for their support/useful posts.

Like I said, I'm 99.99% sure if I'd have just posted the comps noone would know it was my site, but that's not how I do "business".

I can't see why the admins would have a problem with what I outlined, but that it their decision and it's their website, so they call the shots.

Which is exactly what I was saying, if Neil isn't the one giving away the free games (for example) then its not self promoting and he won't be benefiting from it.

If Microsoft (poor example I know!) came onto the forum to do a comp for xbox 360 games that would be wrong and self promoting.
#31
Well, I would be the one giving awaye the free games, tshirts etc, but I wouldn't!

I mean, it'd be via my website, but they'd not be coming out of my pockets, they'd be via my website, but from the likes of Microsoft (i.e they've given them to me to giveaway) etc. The main purpose being to promote the game that the giveaway relates to.

You dont need to be giving stuff away to be self promoting, if you are advertising anything on your own webiste then it is promoting your website, which is self promotion

Which would actually be a big self promotion for you, as your website contains many third party affiliate links. If it had been posted, it definitely would have been checked out and removed anyway because of those at least.

Sorry about that, but self promotion in any way here is a big no, as it would eventually lead to spam...
