same thing has happened to me but i did contact mods about it - i was as confused as you

at least people saw the deals though:?

Going by today's post, it would seem that price was the deciding factor, so like I say, as there are about 45 games in that list that offer as good or better value, would it be ok if each of them were to be reposted individually? :?

well the last time i saw someone post each one seperately they got voted cold by members who said they should be in one post, like i said i suppose it depends who classes what as the deciding factor in it having its own thread
#6
too much hassle listing separately - with your post n/s you just scroll and see each one (45) or so
cant imagine what it would be like to click on 45 separate ones!! jeez

I'm sorry I hate people listing "SALE" or "DEALS", I can't be bothered sifting through webpages finding something. I would hate HUKD if every post was...

SALE HMV 20%
DEALS @ GAME
MONEY OFF WH SMITH

:P

Ooh and if someone sees a deal can u blame them for not looking through every other post to see if it has been posted... obviously check, but asking people to open up threads and sifting through information is a bit harsh.

I will have a search for the thread, I know it is in "Feedback", but it has been made clear that you can list them individually as well as in a "Mega Sale" thread.

I remember it being answered in regards to the play.com sale posted by amibees a while back Easter?

If I was using a search for something specific, i would not find it if it were in a "Mega Deal" thread. :)

Sorry, I only skimmed the OP, but you should only need clarification if you have evidence from a moderator contrary to what emma has said.

I need clarification because the two things seem contradictory. Why ask us to group deals together in one post, if they can then be posted seperately?

In any case, one excellent reason to have a separate thread is for this reason:

Not if you a searching for a specific item and narrowed it down to "Titles only".

If I were looking for "Wii fit" for example, I wouldn't search "Entire thread" because it would bring back 1 milllion" results, as opposed to 1 thousand in "Titles only".

lol - i dont think a wii fit is going to be listed in a massive thread, thought we where referring to like a list of dvd's, cd's etc on offer within the same company

I think this is just gonna be one of those "if it stands out fro the others then list"

No the thread that you made was perfect, but a bad example in the case you are trying to highlight.

Lets say a newbie posts a sale thread and mentions the games, but the prices, pictures are omitted, and only appear at post #60.

Would it be fair that no one could highlight a fantastic deal in a thread of it's own?

I just used Wii fit as an example, it could be "Pulp Fiction" DVD to use your analogy.
"Standing out from the list" is in the eyes of the beholder.

if your using the advanced search and search within a thread narrowed down to the deals board then surely you would find what you want

right just tried pulp fiction in advanced search, search within a thread, in deals and this came up, cant even find those words withing the threads its got up, total waste of time, i now agree

Yes it would, but it wouldn't get away from the fact that "Titles only" is a much better way of searching for something specific.
If someone mentioned "Pulp Fiction" in a thread that was nothing about "Pulp Fiction" to highlight that the film someone was buying was not as good/better than "Pulp Fiction", would be completely missed by searching "Title only".

I only use "Entire thread" when I know an exact phrase that someone has used, and know it is not in the title.

The search function is already hard to use for newcomers especially, expecting them to wade through even more non relevant threads is surely not going to encourage them to use it?

Edit: I just see that you've changed your reply. :)

Sorry Saint, I've tried searching but it's not exactly an easy thing to find, especially as the chances are when it has been said will be in threads that have been deleted. However, if I have gotten the wrong end of the stick and we are not encouraged to do this, I am sure Admin or a Mod will be more than happy to correct me. :)

Why is it a bad example, when it was exactly this thread that cause me to become confused? If my post was 'perfect', why should duplicate deals be allowed to stay?

This is why I said in my OP that I could kind of understand what they were saying, because there are example like the one you give here, where I could understand the need for allowing a duplicate deal, but without further clarification of the situation, it leaves me (and I assume others) confused.

Your "Perfect thread" was good for a "Mega Deal" thread, but no good for someone that came to the site looking for a specific item. I am repeating myself now, so will leave it there.

PM a mod or Admin to have a look at this thread if you need clarification. :)

I don't know about his, but I remember him posting a lot of threads for 2nd hand games that were normal 2nd hand prices, that was my issue with them.

I post deals for people to find that search for a specific item, the system is used differently for everyone, some vote my deals cold because they don't like me (understandable), but as long as someone searching for it finds it at the best price available(Which it is, or was) then I am happy.

I have stated that people buying on "heat" are muppets, so if they miss my deal, more-fool-them.

What I have said is that If I were looking for "Pulp Fiction" and the best deal was in a "Mega Deal" thread, I would not find it.

Yep, that's the kind of thread I mean hts. My confusion is, what's the point of going to all the time and effort to make such as thread, if it's perfectly OK for other people to come along and post (either deliberately or accidentally) each of those deals separately? :?

Predictably, here's my two pennies:

Personally, I think if they're done correctly, then 'in one place' threads can work really well. nightswimmer did it with the ChoicesUK games thread, and I tried to do it with the cheap DVDs at Play thread the other day. What they rely on though, is the items available being listed in the OP or the first post as opposed to just a thread saying "sale now on".

What I also did was provide the "go to deal" link to route to Play's search results in ascending price order, so you could see them all right there. Those sorts of threads can work, and people do seem to appreciate them - the 'heat' they get seems to suggest that to me anyway, they frequently get more heat than individual items. amibees just posted a general sale thread for CD-Wow this morning, but provided hardly any details of the titles on offer. So if someone now sees one of those titles and does a general keyword search for it, it won't come up, so they'll go and start a new thread. But I posted a quick list of the cheaper DVDs from the sale, which took me 2 minutes to put together, which means it now would come up in a general search, so might put people off reposting.

I know people argue that it's better to have individual deals so you don't have to "trawl through" scores of other posts in one thread to find something, but if you put the titles available in the OP, there's no need to trawl through anything. It relies on people putting in the time and effort to do it though, and not everyone will. Plus there's just as much to trawl through on the main thread listings in order to find those individual deals anyway! I'd rather take time to read one thread about DVDs (for example) than trying to spot three threads in amongst fifty others about trampolines, biscuits and Wii flippin' Fit. :-D

Yeah I see your point nightswimmer but it would surely be too hard to moderate on duplicate deals.
I chose to do it on The Book People because they are not that popular a merchant and I thought it would be nicer and easier for people to see one thread. As it happens i think there were still a couple of duplicates, Winnie the Pooh being one.

I can't see it working on things like Play sales . The mods would be forever deleting threads ??
In fact I wouldn't even attempt it as I have seen it tried before and it failed.

Only other way would be dedicated merchant sale threads ?? Can't see that working either TBH.

Regards and hope I have got the right end of the stick here :)

This would probably be my preffered suggestion too, that if the deal is listed in the OP, then it shouldn't be allowed to be duplicated.

If someone else posts later in the thread, then the Original Poster can always add the deal to the OP (with credit of course :) ), keeping it all neat and tidy like. ;-)

I am not sure why? Quite a few threads are reported/deleted because they are duplicates of such threads, so I don't think it would add to the work load. In fact a more specific rule might make it easier for Mods as it would make deciding whether a thread should stay or be deleted so much easier.

Regards and hope I have got the right end of the stick here :)

LOL, you've got the right end of the stick. :)

I can see what you're saying hts, which is why I know this issue is a difficult one, but speaking on a personal level, having spent about 6-7 hours working on just that ChoicesUK thread (and that's just one of several multiple deal posts I've made over the past few months), it's a little bit galling to think that each of those deals could be posted seperately. Call me selfish if you want, but it doesn't exactly encourage me to want to spend a similar amount of time on future such deals.
[admin]#37
I don't really have a clear line on this one.

I think this is one area to let stuff happen organically. If people want separate deals they'll probably post them separate. If they see the compilation ones as useful then those threads will probably get more heat and "applause" which should encourage people to keep doing them. If they are more popular they will keep getting bumped up and individual ones fall.

I don't think it's an either or. Sometimes a compilation is way more useful and sometimes individual "gems" need to be flagged.
[helper]#38
guv
Down to the individual I guess! I'd prefer when a sale is on for say DVDs, its marked with examples within, not 100s of post to those individual items. However, if one deal stands out, then I dont have a problem with that being highlighted.

I think Guv summed it up quite nicely

So in the example given in the OP, would you be happy for the other 45 'Gems' to be posted separately?

I realise it's a difficult one to call Admin, but the way it is at the moment leads to a lot of confusion (no doubt for your Mod team as well). For example, there were several deals posted that were duplicates of deals in the ChoicesUK thread I was talking about in the OP, which were deleted because they were duplicates. And yet this latest example has been allowed to stay. The same has been true of other similar threads by other posters. That inconsistency can't be good for anyone, can it? Especially when you rely on the good will of your members to post deals, because it ultimately leads to confusion, frustration and anger.
