I have always struggled to see what place competitions have on a deals site anyway .... but people seem to like them and it gets the posting count up if it matters

This has been touched upon before in this thread

Below is part of the Mod response and I think Juliet sums things up very nicely....

Hotukdeals encourages it's members to name where they found the competition, whether it be in a newspaper, from a TV show or another website. We also appreciate the fact that the viral nature of promotions like this mean they do spread like wildfire, some are posted on HUKD first, some elsewhere. All members who actually post deals and comps are contributing to our site..

People seem to like them and believe me we'd have a lot of requests to section them out of the deals section if they weren't already.

just remove competitions from your profile if it upsets you that much. Not everyone has the time to browse 2 sites all the time

I don't see the harm at all, I like to enter them and don't go on MSE so I appreciate that someone has took the time to post them. Alot of people enter the competitons on here, its a personal choice thing but it doesn't mean a hate campaign has to start up on a member. If i didn't know any better it's a form of bullying and we spend all this time getting our kids not to do it maybe its the adults that need to be taught a few lessons :|
I have won a good few things by entering comps.

Why is it people who rarely contribute are the ones that moan at those who do. If we all took their lead they'd rarely be anything posted.

What is your point, what do you think is wrong? Are they preventing you from posting some excellent comps, or is it taking you more than 30 seconds to peruse the section?
It seems that MSE have accepted that Comps should form part of a money saving site (they are the experts so the title says)
I have looked at comps on MSE and find the site very unfriendly (in terms of usability) and much prefer the layout on HUKD.
I cant understand anyone complaining about people who spend an inordinate amount of their own time posting comps on this site, just for the benefit of others.
If you don't like it, do as csiman suggests block your profile or i'd suggest that you don't look, nobody's forcing you.
Do not try and restrict posters when other users are more than happy with their posts.

don't see th eproblem with them TBH, although do think that if you nick a deal/post from another site you should put at the bottom 'thanks to xxx' or something like that.

dont see any problems with the postings/contributions. in fact i do contribute when i can or have something to share. but yes i do think that since she just found it on another website (moneysavingexpert) and then posting it here as her own is not really fair to the original poster. give credit where credit is due.

Well I would like to say that I think the competitions are very worthwhile-if you don't like them, dont read or enter them...simple. I actually got a very sizeable cash win via this site in a comp I enetered, so maybe instaed of moaning about them, enter them!!!!

I think you have blown this way out of proportion.
If the thread hasn't already been posted on hukd then Gem is more than free to post comps from other web sites. Whats the harm? Not everyone is part of MSE and appreciate the deals that they post. Like me!
Gem is not double posting, not harming anyone in any way, I just think your actions are very hurtful.

Unfortunately missgem shows no respect for regular posters who now can't contribute as the competitions they monitor are being ripped off mse - and shows no respect to the people on mse by not acknowledging them despite Juliet Bravo stating that users are encouraged to state where they source their posts.

Usually when someone like this comes along they get bored after a while & go away... unfortunately, being a 'helper' that doesn't look like it's going to happen.

That was quite harsh!

I'm not quite sure what is really behind this "Flaming" of Missgem, but seeing as I've just come back from the pub I thought I would add my three penneth.
I seem to remember someone else having a similar problem where they posted comps on MSE and before they had chance to post on HUKD someone else had lifted the post and copied it, the original poster was aggreaved and felt that the fruit of their labour was stolen, so they rearranged their posting timetable and it worked for them, I think.

"Showing no respect" - Manners, Etiquette and culture describes a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group. In Britain, the word "etiquette" has been described as the one word that aptly describes life during the reign of queen Victoria (source Wiki) The world has moved on from there (not always a good thing I agree-but it has nevertheless moved on)

Wiki says this:- Etiquette may be wielded as a social weapon. The outward adoption of the superficial mannerisms of an in-group, in the interests of social advancement rather than a concern for others, is considered by many a form of snobbery, lacking in virtue.
Not my words, but some people may think that is what's happening here Wiki

Netiquette (internet etiquette) is still being formulated, as it does not conform to the known single society norm as it is multi national etc., etc., but I do believe that most posters feel that once they have published a comp on a website it is open for all to use, posters on MSE often lift the comps from other sites.
I dont think Missgem is preventing comps being posted as there are far more being posted now than ever before (I dont have the stats but I guess they have more than doubled) and I have not seen Missgem purport that these posts are her own (whatever that means), in fact she has openly stated that she obtains them from various sources e.g. Loquax, (UKCompetitions or the like) etc.
As far as I know she gets no commendations for the number of posts she makes, in fact I've seen nothing but praise with the exception of a couple of posters.
e.g. portwest was praising her when they stated: "Time is so finite so we must spend it well.Keep busy for us all".[b]

Thanks to everyone who posts - and thanks missgem for the comp links.

This site used to be really friendly - everyone helped each other along - and if someone made a mistake and posted something some else already had - were nicely told.

Now its really bitchy in lots of cases - people vote cold instead of saying its already posted - and to be honest the search facility usually misses half the deals already posted when you check.

People vote cold on the basis something isn't a good deal because its 2p cheaper at a shop half the country don't have.

What happened to the friendly - help each other find a bargain- site we used to be.

And the person above is right - most of the moans are from people who don't even bother to add to the site by posting deals.

Calm down, be nice - or there will end being no one left posting bargains at all !

I like the fact that there is a bit of everything - but you can filter out what doesn't interest you - comps, help requests, jokey stuff - all helps make the site was it is - or what it was i should say.

Thanks again for the comp links missgem - and to everyone who bothers to post and is friendly on the site ;)

It's also worth pointing out that by copying the posts Miss Gem could get banned from MSE (as it's against their rules)

no problem with comps...some like them personally I cba however if they are taken from MSE then the original poster should be given credit, a helper should do this it's just good manners
banned 2 Likes #21
I didn't even realise she was a helper, in that case copying stuff from other sites is pretty bad TBH. At the very least she should say where they are from . I'm sure HUKD wouldn't like it if someone copied all the posts from here to another site, let alone without giving credit.

We've already discussed this to the hilt. Missgem is not copying competitions from MSE, we've spoken to her about the concerns of some members here and she understands. She is a helper, that has nothing to do with what she posts. She is still a member, she just has a couple of extra privileges at her disposal.

This is beginning to border on a flaming campaign and it's gone on enough. I've stated the case on a previous thread already and if anyone else wants to discuss the situation, you can do so via contact us please.
