I'm sure that duplicate posts are a mistake as are duplicates of any post. The congratulations will create a good feeling between members though and encourage people to post more good deals when they see them instead of thinking " i'm not posting on that misserable forum!" lol
would you like us to over look you when you get to 3000? Im sure you would feel quite sad :p

As far as I'm aware there was no thread when I passed 2000 posts nor would I want one, same for 3000 or whatever posts. Writing a post is hardly a challenge especially as the majority of these posts are from the misc forum, not from posting deals.

Congrats admin for the vb default :)

I don't think these type of posts do any harm. You can either ignore, read or add congratulations, but if a member chooses to add insults or offensive tags, then I would hope that that member would be dealt with by the mods or Admin.

.. just one more question, then will buzz off. what's a vb default? (yep.. blonde!:)

and on the subject of the threads mentioned, would ditto the comment that people can choose to read, or not to read.

vB is short for vBulletin, the name of the forum software (manufactured by Jelsoft). It used to control a lot more of the site, but our own coders have been pushing it out in favour of code that they have written themselves.

The forum software currently manages users, avatars, bans, rep, most other things associated to users, and replies to posts (but not the original post).

Hope that explains it a little bit. :)

It's not a case of reading them or not, it's that they're taking up more and more of the forum - my initial reaction when logging in tonight is the same as Admin mentioned, there's quite a percentage of the threads now being congratulation ones which given the limited threads per page means that many other threads are being pushed out of the way.

I sorta of agree in one sense as it does push other threads off the page, so any threads asking for help etc, etc, can get missed, but then some nights theres naff all else going on I know some think its sad we spend our time in misc, but we do and thats that, i do think maybe a more serious board is needed, abit like the feedback board is for serious stuff, the misc is for nonsense and thats what 99% of misc talk is (apart from me of course, im the 1% -lol) so maybe admin could look into adding a more serious board for those that need help, for the more serious stuff that doesnt belong in feedback but can get easily missed in misc, just a thought
#26
I've seen Emma post that because misc is just for random nonsense then, if it doesn't offend anyone, it's fine. Sometimes misc is full of jokes, or enquiries about laptops or threads about snow. It varies and it doesn't take long to scroll down or pop in and have a look. I would think that it's certainly better having freindly exchanges between members than not. I would like a few more discussion threads during the school holidays though, so if you're looking to alter the balance ....

Gives me a chance to not only improve my inadequate social skills but also my pathetic attempts at computer art.

Not many realise I spend all night designing these things so banning them would take away any initiative I have for living.

If you want that on your conscience then by all means ban them.

Anyway I have to go, I'm working on Ducky's birthday congratulations graphic.

Its been mentioned so many times but it is a really good idea. What are the reasons for not having a 'serious misc' (help) forum and a 'nonsense misc' forum? Surely with the growth of the site in recent months its time to seriously consider this option?

Especially as there are now no sticky links - there are loads of serious, useful posts in the misc forum (guides to posting, quidco threads, free downloads etc etc etc) that simply get lost in the various nonsense, game, congrats and spam threads.

That is reasonable although to be clear, it's not so much the congratulations threads themselves which I'm questioning it's more the increasing number of them - increasing the limit to 5k or something to reduce the number or even just containing it all to a single thread would be fine.

I was saying the same thing about the duplicate word games threads the other day but the simple fact is people want a nonsense forum, which is fair enough, just a pity that is has to be mixed with serious discussion. Respect for starting this thread as its the sort which will lead to a lot of unfair backlash despite being a perfectly valid and thought out point...

I used to be ok with them, I used to just ignore them.... but there have been an awful lot of them lately.

The trouble is, a lot of times when someone asks a question the thread can naturally evolve into a nonsense thread, so where do you draw the line?
#37
I don't think that's so much of an issue, if a 'serious' thread is started, a suitable solution or whatever is provided then the thread degenerates it doesn't matter too much as the useful information is still there at the start of the thread. Therefore it could remain in the same forum, threads started off which came under the 'nonsense' classification would be placed in that forum section from the start.

I kinda see where you're coming from John. I have considered using the custom option of the board, and excluding the misc forum full stop.
There are as has been said here a lot of congrats threads, which i don't mind too much about, since i can ignore them or post. There are a lot of jokes in there, where they're in what appears to be a serious title. One was titled, Warning and was a joke about decking and B&Q. Now, no offence to the OP, but i think the prefix of the word Joke would be REALLY helpful, if we cannot have a joke area/board or as has been said, a nonsense misc and a serious misc.
I'd just really appreciate it, if threads in general gave more info in the subject........

From a purely personal point of view i dont have a problem with them.. I think the beauty of this site is that it has clearly defined categories and surely misc will equal random nonsense (at times) :) Duplicates are always going to be posted in any category..

I dont venture into misc very often but i think the regulars on there have a great community spirit going on, which can only be good for the site as a whole..
Also when i have posted on there-often looking for help or advice i have never been ignored, so it is not as if newbies or specific threads are getting ignored or missed at all..

I would be more concerned to see nastiness or bitching threads than friends congratulationg one another tbh and i spose like everyting else its just the "in thing" at the moment and will be something else soon..

Leave the lovely folk in misc to get on with it i say! :)

I posted something last night to cure all: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/175000/congratulations-to-all-posters-on-t/ :giggle:

I don't really go into Misc that much, but whenever I do, there always seem to be congraulations threads - generally for people I've never heard of. As I spend most of my time in Deals, I'm guessing that these people being congratulated have built up a high post count in Misc? I agree that it's a community in its own right - there are some people on here who have really really high rep counts, and if you look at their thread-starting history, they've put forward maybe one deal in 6 months, so the rep isn't coming from there. I guess what I'm saying is that the Misc forum is a bit of a clique, it has its own rules and language, back-slapping rep is passed backwards and forwards between a certain group of people, and people get to know each other. I think it's a good thing though, helps keep the site popular, and if you're like me and don't really bother with Misc much, keep it that way! :-D
